Rock salt shortage could impact local road conditions
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A nationwide rock salt shortage could leave Massachusetts with icy and snowy roads.
Road salt demand is extremely high across the country, leaving local authorities in Massachusetts struggling to keep the roads clear.
Springfield seeks more funds for road repairs
The northeast is bracing for another round of winter weather on Wednesday, which would be the third snow event in less than 10 days. This comes as salt suppliers are facing high demand across the country. 22News spoke with Trevor Wood at West Springfield DPW to understand why demand is so high.
'These little one-inch, two-inch snowstorms take a toll on the salt,' Wood said. 'If you're having four or five-inch snowstorms, you're just plowing. These two-inch storms are just knocking it down with salt, so that's why it's just taking so much.'
700 tons of salt for a town like West Springfield may only last one or two snowstorms. West Springfield started pre-treating roads with liquid ice melt to combat the high salt demand. Even with these precautions, some areas have resorted to outside help.
'We're just kind of calling contractors in just to plow all the snow off, even if it is two inches, and then we'll salt after the fact,' Wood said. 'This time of year we're kind of just letting the snow kind of snow first.'
If winter storms keep hitting areas that are ill-equipped, like Florida and Texas, salt demand could stay high through the winter.
If you're unable to find regular road salt in your area, some people are using water-softener salt to keep ice and snow off their driveways.

Mosquito activity: Effective ways to prevent bites
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The weather is warming up, and the bugs are coming out. Springfield opens cooling centers as temperatures rise Mosquitoes are becoming more active, and there are some things you can do to help keep yourself from getting bitten. If you've spent any time outside recently, you've probably seen or even been bitten by a mosquito. The weather we've been having recently is why we're seeing more of them. 'Because we've had all this wet weather, thinking about these artificial containers on your properties,' says Natasha Wright, Entomologist with Braman Termite & Pest Elimination. 'If you have old pots, if you have a tar,p anything that can hold water can potentially breed mosquitoes, so finding those artificial containers and getting rid of them.' You can also get mosquito dunks that you can place in standing water to help kill the mosquitoes. To prevent yourself from being bitten, there are sprays you can buy. Look for the ones that contain DEET, they're the ones that are most effective. Mosquitoes are most active around dusk and dawn. Record May rainfall alleviates regional dryness
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Last fall, we were experiencing a severe drought in western Massachusetts from the lack of rain, but it's long gone now. Springfield opens cooling centers as temperatures rise We have seen our fair share of rain this spring, including nearly every weekend. We have seen quite a bit of rain recently, but this can be a good time of year to have a little extra. During May, we had quite a bit of rain, and that did cause area rivers to rise. And this past weekend, some heavy downpours did lead to some street flooding in some spots. 22News Storm Team Meteorologist Chris Bouzakis says, 'We've seen a lot of rain, I mean May was an incredibly wet month. We saw many areas over 6 inches of rain, nearly double the average rainfall for May, so that helped us out with the drought.' The wet weather has made everything nice and green, and with it getting warmer and the sun getting stronger, as we head into summer, if we do get a stretch of dry weather, we should be in pretty good shape thanks to all the rain we've seen. It was a dry day on Thursday, but it looks like we do have some more rain in the forecast.
