Nate Jackson's closed comedy club comes back to life in new location, with plenty of improvements

Yahoo10-02-2025

Tacoma-based comedian and actor Nate Jackson's Super Funny Comedy Club, which closed Dec. 31, is getting a new lease on life — but in a new, better location.
Sometime in March or April, Jackson will reopen a bigger club inside the Courtyard Tacoma Downtown Marriott, he said in a phone call Sunday from Sofia, Bulgaria, where he's performing on a European tour.
Jackson opened his first club in 2020, just before the pandemic hit. On Sunday, he didn't walk to talk about the reasons he closed it but it wasn't for lack of audiences or entertainers. In a December 2024 interview with The News Tribune, he expressed longstanding pent-up frustrations with the 8402 South Hosmer Street location.
Jackson said he was inspired to reopen by the club's fan base.
'It made me want to see if there was a place that we can still have the club in Tacoma, and I would only do it if it truly makes sense,' he said.
He credits Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards for helping him connect with downtown business owners.
The new location uses the events space on the lower level of the Marriott at 1515 Commerce Street, facing Pacific Avenue. It's about the same size of the Hosmer location, with seating for about 275.
'It's beautiful,' Jackson said. 'I've put a little bit north of six figures or so into it. We've completely remodeled the place. It's going to be high class.'
The kitchen, he said, is 15 times the size of his previous one and will allow him to greatly expand his menu. He's recruiting young talent from the region's culinary schools.
The showroom will have more booths, the latest in screen technology and will be outfitted with audiovisual recording equipment, making it easier to produce his highly popular YouTube videos.
'We have more LED screens than any other venue in Tacoma,' he said.
Jackson's connections with the comedy world and Hollywood bring a steady stream of talent to Tacoma. He says headliners like D.L. Hughely, Shuler King and D.C. Young Fly will soon be performing again at Super Funny.
The various permits and inspections needed for the club make his opening date a little foggy. He returns from his European tour in early March.
In an era of DEI rollbacks, Jackson wants locals to know that his club thrives on diversity in both its talent and audiences.
'We have white headliners, Asian headliners ... why would you segregate laughter?,' he said.

Pop Mart's CEO Is China's 10th Richest Person Thanks to Labubu

Summary Pop Mart's CEO Wang Ning has ascended to China's richest ranks all because ofLabubu. The unassuming world of designer toys has just produced one of China's newest billionaires, proving that cultural phenomena, even those contained within a 'blind box,' can generate immense wealth. Wang Ning, the visionary founder of Pop Mart, has surged into the ranks of China's top ten richest individuals, a meteoric rise largely attributed to the global frenzy surrounding the quirky yet captivating character, Labubu. Pop Mart, a Beijing-based company founded by Wang Ning in 2010, initially started as a multi-brand retailer. However, its strategic pivot to developing and selling its own original intellectual properties (IPs) through the 'blind box' model truly unlocked its exponential growth. The blind box concept, where consumers purchase a sealed package without knowing which specific design from a series they will receive, taps into a powerful blend of surprise, gamification, and collectibility, fostering an addictive treasure-hunt dynamic, particularly among Gen Z and adult collectors. While Pop Mart boasts a roster of beloved characters, it is Labubu, the mischievous, pointy-eared, and toothy elf-like creature created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, that has become the undisputed star. Licensed by Pop Mart in 2019, Labubu's popularity has soared to unprecedented heights, especially over the past year. This 'Labubu Mania' has been fueled by a combination of factors: its 'ugly-cute' aesthetic, highly sought-after limited editions, and crucially, immense celebrity endorsements from global figures and celebrities likeLISA, Emma Roberts,Dua LipaandRihannahave all joined in on the craze, adding Labubus to their everyday bags. This insatiable global demand for Labubu has directly translated into a colossal surge in Pop Mart's revenue and stock price. In 2024, Pop Mart's net income reportedly soared by 188%, with total sales more than doubling, reaching approximately 13 billion yuan (around $1.8 billion USD). The Monsters franchise, which includes Labubu, saw an astonishing 726.6% revenue increase, becoming the company's top earner. This financial performance has propelled Wang Ning's personal wealth to over $20 billion USD, positioning him as one of the wealthiest individuals in China, as well as the country's youngest billionaire.

Dakota Johnson slams Hollywood bosses: Too focused on 'remaking the same things'

Dakota Johnson thinks Hollywood is in a "bit of a mess" because studios want to focus on remakes and sequels. The Materialists actress suggested people making decisions in the industry "don't know anything" about movies and just want to capitalise on the success of one project, rather than taking a risk and offering audiences "fresh" new stories. Appearing on YouTube series Hot Ones, host Sean Evans asked her why she feels 'Hollywood is so risk-averse,' as someone who has seen the industry 'up close and personal.' She said: 'I think it's hard when creative decisions are made by committee and it's hard when creative decisions are made by people who don't even really watch movies or know anything about them, and that tends to be what's occurring a lot. "When something does well, studios want to keep that going so they remake the same things, but humans don't want that. They want fresh, they want to feel new things, experience new things, see new things, so I don't know, I guess it's all just a bit of a mess right now, isn't it?' Dakota recently insisted her film Madam Web's poor performance wasn't her fault because the film - in which she played Cassie Web, a paramedic who develops psychic abilities following an accident - had "turned into something else" after she signed up for the project. She told the Los Angeles Times newspaper: 'It wasn't my fault. There's this thing that happens now where a lot of creative decisions are made by committee. Or made by people who don't have a creative bone in their body. And it's really hard to make art that way. Or to make something entertaining that way. 'And I think unfortunately with Madame Web, it started out as something and turned into something else. And I was just sort of along for the ride at that point. But that happens. Bigger-budget movies fail all the time.' Dakota insisted she doesn't "have a Band-Aid over it" and isn't too worried about the experience. She said: 'There's no part of me that's like, 'Oh, I'll never do that again' to anything. I've done even tiny movies that didn't do well. Who cares?' Dakota previously suggested she wouldn't make another superhero film following her experience on Madame Web. She told Bustle: 'I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don't make sense in that world. And I know that now. 'Sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it's one thing and then as you're making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you're like, 'Wait, what?' "But it was a real learning experience, and of course it's not nice to be a part of something that's ripped to shreds, but I can't say that I don't understand.'
