Local leaders react, make plans to remember Pope Francis

DENVER (KDVR) — Easter symbolizes the renewal of life, and Monday morning, the Catholic Church is mourning the loss of its leader.
It's a new chapter for the Catholic Church, as Pope Francis passed away overnight. He suffered from chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed as a young man. His cause of death will be determined by a report expected later, but he spent significant time in the hospital recently.
He was admitted to a hospital in Italy back on Feb. 14, where he stayed for 38 days, originally for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia.
Francis was the pope for 12 years.
Father Sam Morehead at the Cathedral Basilica watched as the Denver Fire Department helped drape the black bunting over the front of the church along Colfax. It signifies a period of mourning for the church.
'We were prepared, because when the Holy Father was so sick and in the hospital for the extended period of time, we were getting word that it was a very serious illness. We all know now that his doctors didn't think he would pull through it. So just to be prudent, we started putting together the supplies between the cloth and the things that we'll find in the Cathedral Basilica itself to prepare for this. All of it was in a back closet in my room. And then when I got the news this morning, I said, well, the time is common. We have to start mourning the Pope. And I've already been hugging crying parishioners who've been down here already this morning to pray for the Pope,' said Morehead.
Pope Francis dies at 88
Several local leaders released statements on Francis' death, which you can read in their entirety below.
The Archdiocese of Denver sent a statement to FOX31 on Francis' passing, saying:
Today, Easter Monday, as the Church continues to rejoice in Christ's resurrection, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, was called to the house of the Father. Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila, Archbishop of Denver, reflects on the Holy Father's life, saying, 'Bishop Jorge Rodriguez and I are grateful to God for Pope Francis' powerful example of humility, prayer and service to the Church for the past 12 years. From the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in 2015, to his prayer in St. Peter's Square during COVID, to this ordinary Jubilee of Hope this year, from his weekly Angelus messages to his encyclicals and writings, he continually called us to encounter Jesus Christ, to accompany others as Christ did, with mercy and tenderness, and to draw near to the Father's heart in this apostolic age. His special emphasis on seeking out the lost and marginalized has encouraged many to encounter Jesus, who is our Savior, the Way, the Truth and the Life. As we mourn his passing, may we remember his call to preach the Gospel courageously, joyfully and full of hope. Yesterday as we celebrated Easter, Pope Francis reminded us, 'All those who put their hope in God place their feeble hands in his strong and mighty hand; they let themselves be raised up and set out on a journey. Together with the risen Jesus, they become pilgrims of hope, witnesses of the victory of love and of the disarmed power of Life.' Let us be those who set outon mission to proclaim Jesus Christ Risen to our world! Please join Bishop Rodriguez and me in praying for Pope Francis' peaceful repose in the hands of the Father. May he and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.''
Archdiocese of Denver
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis also released a statement on X:
Today we mourn the passing of @Pontifex Pope Francis. A force for healing and love, Pope Francis, formerly Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was the first new world pope and was known for his pastoral kindness and compassion.'
Colorado Governor Jared Polis
There will be a special Mass intention at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Denver at 1530 Logan St. on Monday at 12:10 p.m. Before that, the funeral bells will toll for one hour starting at 11 a.m. Inside at 11:30 a.m. parishioners can pray the rosary for Francis.
What are the rites and rituals after a pope dies?
Then, there will be a special Mass on the day of Francis' funeral at the cathedral. The time and day of that are yet to be determined.
According to the Associated Press, those at the Vatican will pay their final respects, and the cause of Francis' death will be determined.
Then, the body rests in the pope's personal chapel for the ritual pronouncement of death.
Then, the governing authority of the Catholic Church, called the Holy See, will work to elect another leader.

Arkansas ranks 45th for child well-being in national report, despite modest gains

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Arkansas ranks 45th in the nation for overall child well-being, according to the 2025 KIDS COUNT Data Book released Monday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The annual report evaluates how children are doing across all 50 states in four areas: economic well-being, education, health, and family and community. 6-year-old Dennis Martin still missing after disappearing in Smokies in 1969 Though Arkansas has made some gains since the COVID-19 pandemic, the state continues to fall behind on most indicators compared to national averages. One area of progress is child poverty. The number of Arkansas children living in poverty has dropped by 7,000 since 2019. Still, 21% of the state's children remain in poverty, which is higher than the national rate of 16%. 'This report shows that while there has been some improvement, too many of our children are still being left behind,' said Keesa Smith-Brantley, executive director of Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families. 'We can't be satisfied with small gains when the overall trends remain troubling.' Racial disparities remain a serious issue. Officials said Black children in Arkansas face a poverty rate of 43%. Children of two or more races have a poverty rate of 21%, while 19% of Hispanic or Latino children live in poverty. Non-Hispanic White children have the lowest poverty rate at 15%. Ohio girl with brain injury from flu complications returns home In addition to being ranked 44th for child poverty, Arkansas is in the bottom 10 states on the following indicators: Teens ages 16-19 not attending school and not working 8th graders below proficient on math level Low-birthweight babies Child and teen deaths Teens ages 10-17 who are overweight or obese Children in single-parent families Children living in high-poverty areas Teen birth rate 'If you look at the data, teens are where we're falling further behind,' Smith-Brantley said. 'We're seeing more teens out of school and unemployed, and more who are overweight or obese. These are outcomes tied directly to the decisions our leaders are or aren't making.' Recall issued for potential significant risk with use of Zicam, Orajel swabs. What to know

A "potential microbial contamination" has lead to the recall of several cold nasal swabs and baby teething swabs, according to an announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration June 9. All lots of Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, Zicam Nasal AllClear Swabs, and Orajel Baby Teething Swabs have been recalled due to the potential contamination. The swabs can "potentially present a significant risk to the health and safety of consumers including serious and life-threatening blood infections." Here's what you should know. Church & Dwight Co. is recalling all lots of Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, Zicam Nasal AllClear Swabs, and Orajel Baby Teething Swabs due to potential microbial contamination identified as fungi in cotton swab components, according to a June 9 news release. The recall is limited exclusively to Zicam and Orajel swab products. All other Zicam and Orajel products, including Zicam RapidMelts, are not affected by the recall, the news released from the FDA said. As of June 9, "no serious adverse events" associated with the affected product have been reported, the FDA said. Recalled Zicam and Orajel swabs included in the recall are: Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, all lots: A zinc-free, homeopathic cold remedy swab designed to shorten the duration of the common cold. Zicam Nasal AllClear Swabs, all lots: A nasal cleansing swab product (discontinued in December 2024). Orajel Baby Teething Swabs, all lots: Pre-moistened swabs designed to soothe teething discomfort in infants and toddlers. "Swabs found to contain microbial contamination can potentially present a significant risk to the health and safety of consumers including serious and life-threatening blood infections in users whose nasal mucosa may be compromised due to inflammation and mechanical injuries. "The risk is highest — potentially severe or life-threatening — among children and individuals with compromised immune systems or other underlying medical conditions." The recalled products were distributed nationwide in the United States and in Puerto Rico. Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products should stop using the product immediately, the FDA said. Go to or call the Consumer Relations team at 800-981-4710 for a full refund. Healing Shingles Naturally: How East Meets West in Fighting Viral Pain and Brain Risk

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection that causes a painful, blistering rash and often affects older adults or those with weakened immune systems. But since the COVID-19 pandemic, shingles has been appearing in unexpected age groups—raising new concerns about immunity, stress, and long-term health risks. Without timely treatment, this condition can lead to serious complications, including persistent nerve pain and even cognitive decline. In an episode of the 'Health 1+1' program, Jonathan Liu, a Canadian professor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, discussed both Western and TCM approaches to treating the infection, along with immune-boosting medicinal recipes that may help reduce the risk of shingles. The Importance of Early Treatment The primary treatment for shingles involves antiviral medications such as famciclovir or valacyclovir, which are typically taken orally. In more severe cases, intravenous acyclovir may be used, particularly in hospitalized or immunocompromised patients. Liu emphasized that early intervention is crucial. Ideally, antiviral therapy should begin before blisters appear. The medication works by suppressing viral replication rather than repairing tissue damage; therefore, starting treatment more than three days after the onset of blisters may significantly reduce their effectiveness.
