Conductor Chung Myung-whun likens La Scala appointment to marrying his ‘closest friend'
When Milan's Teatro alla Scala, known as the pinnacle of Italian opera, announced conductor Chung Myung-whun, 72, as its next music director, global attention quickly turned to the fact that he would become the first Asian to hold the position. But for the South Korean, the title of La Scala music director carried little personal weight.
'I don't think it's significant just because I'm the first Asian,' Chung said. 'But it's certainly a meaningful opportunity to honour my country, and something I felt I had to do.'
Chung's ties to La Scala date back to 1989. Since then, he has conducted 84 operas and 141 concerts at the theatre and, in 2023, became the first conductor in La Scala Philharmonic's history to be named honorary conductor.
His upcoming tenure as music director runs from 2027 to 2030, following

'La Scala has been my closest friend for 36 years. Now, it feels like we've gone beyond friendship – it's like we've got married,' Chung said with a smile. 'There's a deeper sense of responsibility now.'

There's something for every father – or indeed any man – with this pick of three new designer collections. So whether you want a sharp suit, gear for the beach or something more sporty, we've got you covered. 1. Simone Rocha Simone Rocha transforms the rugby shirt for her latest collection. Photo: Handout Advertisement Irish designer Simone Rocha loves to add a touch of romantic darkness to everyday garments. Take the rugby shirt, which she transformed from a preppy staple of the male wardrobe into a frilly and androgynous piece as part of her autumn/winter 2025 collection, inspired by the children's fable The Tortoise and the Hare. 2. Louis Vuitton Men Louis Vuitton's menswear pre-fall 2025 collection is Miami-inspired. Photo: Handout Pharrell Williams , a long-time resident of Miami who moved to Paris after joining Louis Vuitton as men's creative director, was inspired by the Floridian city's beach vibes for the label's menswear pre-fall 2025 collection. Think nautical stripes, double-breasted jackets in navy blue, summer whites, and monogrammed jackets for a night out on the town. 3. Dolce & Gabbana Dolce & Gabbana incorporates majolica print in its pre-fall 2025 collection. Photo: Handout For its men's pre-fall 2025 collection, Dolce & Gabbana revisited one of its signature motifs: majolica. The curlicue patterns of the Italian ceramicware dating back to the Renaissance period adorn easy-to-wear pieces such as silk shirts, bomber jackets and even practical accessories such as beach bags.

‘I am numb': Blackpink fans left devastated as Hong Kong concerts sell out fast
Tickets for K-pop sensation Blackpink's concerts in Hong Kong sold out in a little more than an hour and a half of going on general sale, leaving many fans disappointed. Advertisement A Post reporter visited the ticket booking platform Cityline when sales opened on Friday at 11am. However, by noon, the wait time on the loading page, of more than an hour, had not shortened, while only limited tickets remained. By around 12.40pm all tickets for the two scheduled shows at Kai Tak Stadium on January 24 and 25 next year, were sold out. The Post also observed around a dozen people attempting to secure tickets at an internet cafe in Causeway Bay, representing about half of the customers present. Many arrived as early as an hour before the 11am sale began to secure a computer and were utilising multiple browser tabs. Some fans also used other personal devices, such as tablets and mobile phones. All of them told the Post that they believed the internet access at the cafe was superior, potentially offering a better chance of joining the queue sooner. Advertisement The hourly rate for computer rentals, typically used for gaming, was HK$16 (US$2) at the cafe. The Post was unable to confirm any successful purchases from the group of fans, with most leaving the venue around noon.
