Smuggled ornamental plants worth RM2.6mil seized in Rantau Panjang
RANTAU PANJANG: The General Operations Force (GOF) seized more than 8,000 ornamental plants worth RM2.6 million, believed to have been smuggled from Thailand, in Kampung Gual Tinggi on Monday.
The Ninth Battalion made the seizure after intercepting a lorry when its driver was seen acting suspiciously at around 12.10am.
Southeast Brigade GOF commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said a 26-year-old man, who was driving the lorry, was also arrested during the operation.
"The enforcement team found 8,000 Pandanus saplings and 138 Heliconia saplings in the vehicle.
"The plants are suspected to be infested with pests and diseases.
"The estimated value of the seizure is RM2.64 million, including the lorry.
:The case is being investigated under Section 5 of the Plant Quarantine Act 1976.
"The suspect and the seized items have been handed over to the Kelantan Agriculture Department for further action," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- The presentation of issues regarding drug threats, progress reports, and discussions to expand the scope of parliamentary cooperation will be among the main agenda at the 8th Meeting of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Advisory Council on Dangerous Drugs (AIPACODD) 2025, hosted by Malaysia, in Kuantan from June 10 to 12. According to a statement from the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Dewan Rakyat) today, the meeting will be officiated by the AIPA president and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, while Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Dr Ramli Mohd Nor will be appointed as the chairperson of the 8th AIPACODD Meeting. "Among the main agenda of the meeting are a panel session featuring representatives from the ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matters (ASOD), National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), and the Ministry of Health Malaysia, alongside progress report presentations by all AIPA member country parliaments," according to the statement. Also scheduled is a discussion session on the transformation of AIPACODD's role in addressing cross-border crime and the preparation and validation of the meeting's draft resolution. Meanwhile, the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives also announced that in conjunction with the meeting, a royal banquet will be held on June 10 in Kuantan, with the consent of the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. "This royal banquet is the highest honour of the nation to the ASEAN parliamentary representatives, and the Sultan of Pahang's presence reflects the royal institution's support for the strategic role of parliamentary diplomacy in addressing the drug threat and building a safer and more sustainable future for the region," said the statement. AIPACODD was officially established in 2017 as a platform to strengthen the role of parliaments in addressing drug issues through policy monitoring, information sharing and regional cooperation. Two arrested over RM600k worth of unapproved goods from Myanmar
BUKIT MERTAJAM: Authorities have arrested two men, including a foreign national, after uncovering a storage facility containing hundreds of boxes of unapproved food, medicines and cosmetics from Myanmar. The operation was a joint effort involving the intelligence branch of Battalion 2 General Operations Force (GOF), the Seberang Prai Tengah District Health Office, and the Penang Pharmaceutical enforcement cranch. GOF Northern Brigade commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner Shahrum Hashim, said the raid led to the seizure of 868 boxes of food items and 1,567 boxes of medicines and cosmetics, all of which lacked approval certificates from the Health Ministry and the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Division. "The total estimated value of the seized goods is RM559,190. "Preliminary investigations revealed that the storage site had been in use for two years, with the products intended for sale to Myanmar nationals living and working in Bukit Mertajam and surrounding areas," he said in a statement today. Shahrum said the authorities identified the location and thwarted the suspects' efforts to distribute unsafe food, medicines and cosmetics in Malaysia. The foreign suspect is being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, which carries a fine of up to RM10,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or whipping. The local suspect is being investigated under Section 55B of the same Act, which provides for a fine of between RM10,000 and RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to 12 months. The Penang Pharmaceutical Enforcement Branch is continuing investigations under the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984. Shahrum added that enforcement efforts would continue across Perak, Penang and Kedah. "We urge the public to assist us by reporting any suspicious activities," he said.
