Volunteer Louisiana director receives national recognition
BATON ROUGE, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Volunteer Louisiana Executive Director Judd Jeansonne was named the Stoneman Brown Advocate of the Year by Voices for National Service.

The award is presented annually to an individual 'who has demonstrated exemplary determination, creativity, and results in building support for national service among our nation's leaders.'
'It is an honor to be recognized for my work on behalf of AmeriCorps and state commissions,' said Jeansonne. 'Recent cuts and grant terminations have created unprecedented challenges, but I am proud of our work in Louisiana to build bipartisan support at all levels of government. AmeriCorps programs have an outsized impact in Louisiana, with members providing critical services to tens of thousands of Louisianans each year. I will continue to advocate for these programs and the power of national service to strengthen communities throughout Louisiana and across the country.'

Jeansonne received the award at the Friends of National Service Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., on April 30.

BPCC sees record number of dual enrollment graduates
BOSSIER PARISH, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — A record number of high school students have earned degrees through Bossier Parish Community College's dual-enrollment program. Disney on Ice to debut characters from 'Moana 2' and 'Inside Out 2' The dual enrollment program enables eligible students to earn college credits before they graduate from high school. According to BPCC, 112 high school students from North Louisiana graduated from the college. The most popular programs among these graduates included an associate degree in general studies, electrician technology, emergency medical technician training, nursing assistant, and welding. 'This achievement highlights the incredible opportunities that dual enrollment provides, and we couldn't be prouder, ' said Jamie Hilburn, BPCC's dual enrollment coordinator. While many students across the region participated, the most active engagement for the program came from Bienville, Sabine, Natchitoches, and DeSoto parish schools. Free bonsai exhibition showcases ancient art with modern twist
LONGVIEW, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) — Ancient skills with a modern twist will be on display for free at the Longview Arboretum and Nature Center. For 100s of years, people have studied bonsai. The word bonsai comes from combining the Japanese word for pot or container and word for cultivate. The most simple translation is that bonsai is the art of cultivating dwarf trees. Bonsai is not a specific type of tree; many pines and junipers are typically used. It is any tree that is grown in a pot and artificially prevented from reaching its normal size. Bonsai is also not originally Japanese. Dancing and dirt at Shreveport Green's Volunteer Day Bonsai originated in China by the fourth century and spread to Korea. Through Korea, it spread to Japan by the sixth century and spread further, becoming popular in places around the world. The Gregg County Master Gardeners and the Longview Bonsai Society are holding a bonsai exhibition from June 20 to July 3. On June 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., a special seminar, 'Master the Possibilities: Intro to Bonsai,' will teach the basics of bonsai care and design and provide the opportunity to ask questions about the practice.
