Half of UK butterfly species in long-term decline, monitoring reveals

More than half of UK butterfly species are now in long-term decline, as humans destroy habitats, use pesticides and drive climate change, experts said.
The UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme, run by a coalition of conservation organisations, has also revealed that 2024 was one of the worst on record for butterflies in the UK with species including the small tortoiseshell, the chalk hill blue and small copper suffering their worst year ever.
Richard Fox, from Butterfly Conservation, said he was 'devastated' by the declines in British butterflies, which he said were driven by human actions.
The monitoring scheme by charity Butterfly Conservation, the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) has been running since 1976, and now sees volunteers count butterflies across more than 3,000 sites.
Monitoring reveals that 2024 was the fifth worst year since records began for butterflies, with 51 of the UK's 59 butterfly species declining last year compared with 2023, while just six increased.
It was the second worst year on record for common butterflies that live in gardens, parks and the wider countryside such as common blue, gatekeeper and large whites, while nine species had their worst year since counting began.
Experts said that butterfly numbers fluctuate from year to year, and last year's low numbers are in part due to the wet spring and relatively cool summer which did not provide good conditions for winged insects to feed and breed.
But the monitoring data also shows that for the first time, more than half of the UK's butterfly species are in long-term decline.
It reveals 31 have declined since monitoring began, with 22 species suffering significant declines including widespread species such as the small tortoiseshell whose numbers have plummeted 86% since 1976, and the green-veined white which has seen a 28% decline.
Several species listed on the 'red list' amid concerns over their survival, the grizzled skipper, small pearl-bordered fritillary and chalk hill blue, had their worst year on record, the monitoring showed.
Conservationists said those species required specific habitat to survive, which had been destroyed over the past century.
Dr Fox said: 'I am devastated by the decline of our beloved British butterflies, and I'm sorry to say it has been brought about by human actions: we have destroyed wildlife habitats, polluted the environment, used pesticides on an industrial scale and we are changing the climate.
'That means that when we have poor weather, these already-depleted butterfly populations are highly vulnerable and can't bounce back like they once did – and with climate change, that unusual weather is becoming more and more usual.'
The results come after Butterfly Conservation declared a UK-wide 'butterfly emergency' following the worst-ever results of its citizen science Big Butterfly Count last year.
Dr Fox said the wildlife charity had been 'inundated' with people last summer asking where the butterflies had gone and what they could do to help.
'By far the best thing we can do to help butterflies is to create more habitat,' he said, pointing to research by the charity which showed letting part of the garden grow wild with long grass increases butterflies – particularly in gardens and intensive agriculture.
'That is why we are calling on people and councils across the UK to pledge to not cut their grass this year from April to September: this simple act can make a real, immediate difference to butterflies, moths and other wildlife,' Dr Fox urged.
Dr Marc Botham, butterfly ecologist at the UKCEH, said: 'These deeply concerning results from the UKBMS emphasise just how important it is to monitor and record our wildlife so we can target conservation efforts and protect our beloved species.
' Butterflies in particular are valuable not just in their own right but also as indicator species, meaning they can tell us about the health of the wider environment, which makes the UKBMS data invaluable in assessing the health of our countryside and natural world in general.'

Public health bodies should launch alternatives to commercial period tracker apps, experts have said, as a report warns women's personal data is at risk of being harvested by private companies. Smartphone apps that track menstrual cycles are a 'goldmine' for consumer profiling, collecting information on everything from exercise, diet and medication to sexual preferences, hormone levels and contraception use, according to the research by the University of Cambridge. And the financial worth of this data is 'vastly underestimated' by users who supply profit-driven companies with highly intimate details in a market lacking regulation, the report says. In the wrong hands, cycle tracking app (CTA) data could result in risks to job prospects, workplace monitoring, health insurance discrimination and cyberstalking, and even limit access to abortion, the research suggests. The authors call for better governance of the booming femtech industry to protect users when their data is sold at scale, arguing that apps must provide clear consent options rather than all-or-nothing data collection, and urge public health bodies to launch alternatives to commercial CTAs. 'Menstrual cycle tracking apps are presented as empowering women and addressing the gender health gap,' said the report's lead author, Dr Stefanie Felsberger, of Cambridge's Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy. 'Yet the business model behind their services rests on commercial use, selling user data and insights to third parties for profit. 'There are real and frightening privacy and safety risks to women as a result of the commodification of the data collected by cycle tracking app companies.' Most cycle tracking apps are targeted at women aiming to get pregnant, so the download data alone is of huge commercial value, according to the report. Along with homebuying, no other life event is linked to such dramatic shifts in consumer behaviour. Data on pregnancy is believed to be more than 200 times more valuable than data on age, gender or location for targeted advertising. The report says period tracking could also be used to target women at different points in their cycle. The three most popular apps had estimated global download figures of a quarter of a billion in 2024. The femtech market – digital products focused on women's health and wellbeing – will be worth more than $60bn (£44bn) by 2027, the report says. With such intense demand for period tracking, the authors called on public health bodies including the NHS in the UK to develop their own transparent and trustworthy apps to rival those from private companies, with apps allowing permission for data to be used in medical research. 'The UK is ideally positioned to solve the question of access to menstrual data for researchers, as well as privacy and data commodification concerns, by developing an NHS app to track menstrual cycles,' said Felsberger, who added that the reproductive health provider Planned Parenthood in the US already had its own app but the UK lacked an equivalent. 'Apps that are situated within public healthcare systems, and not driven primarily by profit, will mitigate privacy violations, provide much-needed data on reproductive health, and give people more agency over how their menstrual data is used.' Prof Gina Neff, the executive director of the Minderoo Centre, said: 'The use of cycle tracking apps is at an all-time high. Women deserve better than to have their menstrual tracking data treated as consumer data.' In the UK and EU, period tracking data is considered 'special category', as with that on genetics or ethnicity, and has more legal safeguarding. In the US, data on menstrual cycles has been collected by officials in an attempt to undermine abortion access, the report says.

Researchers set out to unravel the mystery of the creatures' long faces and find how they exhibit a range of emotions. Aberystwyth University observed horses when they were friendly, angry or tense, attentive and playful. They then analysed individual muscle movements, created a list of facial expressions among horses and matched them to moods of other animals. During friendly interactions, horses pointed their ears forward and extended their nose. To show dominance, they flattened their ears, dilated their nostrils and lowered their heads. When horses were alert, scientists noticed they put their ears forward and increased blinking. 'Play faces' resembled primates and dogs — as horses opened their mouths, raised chins and had visible eye whites. Lead researcher Dr Sebastian McBride said: 'We found horses use a wide range of facial movements, which vary depending on the social context. "What's particularly fascinating is some of these facial behaviours, especially during play, mirror those seen in chimpanzees and dogs, supporting the hypothesis facial behaviours may be deep rooted in mammalian biology.' Scientists indentified the AUH21 'facial tightener' movement, previously only seen in humans and gibbons. It could help vets detect pain in horses. The research team also said the study would change how we interact with horses, 'leading to better care and stronger human-animal relationships'. 1

Sometimes climate change is hard to visualise, but not the disaster that struck the Swiss alpine village of Blatten on May 28. In the middle of the afternoon a glacier that had stood above the village for centuries broke free from the mountainside and crashed down onto Blatten. The Swiss authorities had seen in coming and evacuated the inhabitants 10 days earlier – only one person is missing, which is both miraculous and a tribute to Swiss engineering. But the 300 people who lived there lost everything. Daniel Ritler had lived all his life in Blatten. The restaurant and delicatessen he ran with his wife Karin now lie under millions of tons of rock and mud, themselves invisible under millions of gallons of water. 'The whole thing happened within 40 seconds. In 40 seconds, everything was gone. Houses that were built in 15 and 16 centuries were buried, all buried', he told me. The sheep Daniel kept in the pristine alpine pastures above the village also survived, but whether they or the Ritlers will even be able to return is uncertain, perhaps even unlikely. Professor Stuart Lane, a British glaciologist who lives in these mountains, and teaches at the University of Lausanne, says that as good as Swiss engineering may be, you cannot engineer away a problem as big as the one that hit Blatten. Indeed, difficult decisions may have to be taken about moving whole towns or villages out of the way of collapsing valley walls. 'The only way you can get a glacier back is by increasing snow in winter and reducing ice melt in summer', he said. 'So only with a reversion to the climate of 50-60 years ago will you see glaciers come back again'. And you don't have to be a top scientist to know how unlikely that is.
