Mumbai: A 44-year-old woman flew down from Jaipur to Mumbai and murdered a businessman who was related to her in a hotel room in Malad (east) three days ago, the police said on Wednesday. The woman used the man's phone to send texts to mislead his family members into believing that he had died by suicide. The motive with which the woman, Barkat Rathod, murdered the Mira Road resident, Imam Mansuri (47), has not been established yet.The woman, who was en route to Jaipur, was arrested the train reached Surat station, said officials of Dindoshi police station.The businessman resided at Mira Road with his wife and son. The woman too used to live in the twin city with her husband and children.The businessman and the woman were close, the police said, adding that when the woman's husband found out about their proximity, he separated from her, after which she moved to her parents' home in Jaipur. This had left her bitter, the police said.On Sunday, she took a flight for Mumbai carrying her mother's phone, leaving her own phone in Jaipur, indicating an attempt to not give away her whereabouts. She did not make any any call using her mother's phone.In Mumbai, she visited the businessman's store at Malad (east). Since he was not at the store, she waited for him to return.Later that day, the businessman's family members received WhatsApp messages from his number, stating that was going to end his life. The messages clarified that there were no relation between him and the woman (Rathod) and that they their reputation had been tarnished.His family set out to look for him. Eventually, they found his vehicle parked outside a hotel in Malad . The hotel staff confirmed that Mansuri and a burkha-clad woman had checked in. Two Aadhaar card copies given to the hotel as proof of identity were of Mansuri and his wife. "This came across as strange as the wife was not with him that day," an official said, adding that his body was found in room 106. An autopsy revealed that he had been poisoned and strangled with a rope. His phone was missing. CCTV footage showed a burkha-clad woman leaving the hotel around 3 pm.The police learnt from his relatives that Rathod was not at her parents' home in Jaipur. A police team supervised by DCP Smita Patil and senior inspector Ajay Aphale, and comprising assistant inspector Om Totavar, got down to tracing her whereabouts. They learnt that she had boarded a train from Mumbai, but hadn't reached Jaipur. With the help of the railway police, she was detained at Surat station. The police are interrogating her to establish the motive for the crime.

CUTTACK: In a high-value financial scam case, the Orissa High Court has granted regular bail to 23 persons accused of being involved in laundering defrauded funds through their bank accounts. The scam surfaced with a retired person lodging a complaint that he was duped of Rs 6.28 crore after being added to a WhatsApp group named as an Investment Club, administered by a person using a US number. Posing as investment advisors, the group lured him with daily stock discussions and fake IPO deals. Falling for the fictitious profits, he invested his retirement corpus into shares of a fake company and was shown massive gains. However, repeated demands for hefty service charges and withdrawal fees led to further losses. Finally, he was removed from the group, the app was deactivated, and no funds were returned. Acting on the complaint, the state CID-Crime Branch's cyber police station in Cuttack registered an FIR on August 24, 2024, and arrested 23 persons in connection with the fraud. The vacation court took up the bail petitions of the 23 accused on Monday following the Supreme Court's direction on May 30 to the high court to consider them on June 9 and decide them expeditiously. One of the accused had sought the SC's intervention against the delay in adjudication on the bail pleas f i led in December and thereafter.

Faridabad Suicide Case: A 45-year-old man from Bihar who lived with his family in Faridabad allegedly committed suicide by jumping before moving train with his four children in Ballabhgarh on Tuesday. All the five family members died on the spot after Golden Temple Express crushed them. According to eyewitnesses, Manoj Mehto clutched onto the children and refused to let them go even as they pleaded with him to be released. Moments later, the train ran over them, dismembering their body. The deceased identified as Manoj Mehto was a daily wage worker from Bihar's Sitamarhi resided in Subhash Colony with his family. Manoj Mehto is survived by his 36-year-old wife. It is alleged that her husband took the extreme step over suspected infidelity. The railway tracks where the tragic incident took place was located around 300 metres from their residence. According to railway police, his three sons were aged five, nine, and ten years while the youngest was 3 years old, PTI reported. Following an altercation with his wife, the man left the house with his children at around 12:15pm and informed his wife that he was taking them to a nearby park. As per TOI report, the mother had prepared parathas for breakfast that day. "The train, which was coming from Mumbai, crushed them under its wheels around 1.10pm," The Times of India quoted Govt Railway Police unit SHO Rajpal as saying. Manoj bought chips and cola for his children and made them sit under Elson Chowk flyover for about an hour near railway tracks. The loco pilot alerted authorities at Ballabhgarh station after which the police identified Manoj through his Aadhaar card found at the site. Besides this, a note with wife's phone number was also found, indicating premeditated actions. The remains were taken to Badshah Khan Civil Hospital mortuary for medical examination. Narrating the happenings of that morning Manoj's wife Preeti said, 'It was a normal Tuesday morning' and added, 'But I wasn't feeling well and had a lot of work to do at home, so I refused (to go). I told him to take the children out. They all left and never returned….'
