Workshop on IUCN Green List
Muscat: A two-day workshop titled, 'Green List Reserves,'organized by the Environment Authority of Oman in coordination with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is being held at Grand Hyatt Muscat. The objective of the workshop is to introduce the IUCN Green List standards to the protected areas and conservation community in Oman.
With a Unique biodiversity, Oman is home to more than 15,000 species of terrestrial and marine plant and animal species, including some rare endemic species as well as species of regional and international importance.
This workshop is part of the ongoing efforts to achieve the goals of Oman Vision 2040 in the field of environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation. It is being attended by a group of international experts, local specialists, and representatives of relevant authorities.

Oman presents commemorative plaque to WTO in Geneva
Muscat – Oman has gifted a commemorative plaque to World Trade Organization (WTO) to mark the visit of H H Sayyid Bilarab bin Haitham al Said to its headquarters in Geneva on June 21, 2023. Created by Omani artist Salem bin Khamis al Salami, the plaque is a symbolic representation of Oman's civilisational heritage, natural diversity and its future development vision. It was created under the supervision of Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion in collaboration with Omani Society for Arts, which is affiliated to Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth. Presentation of the plaque reflects Oman's approach to cultural diplomacy and its growing engagement with international institutions. H E Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, said, 'This initiative reflects Oman's commitment to promoting cultural exchange and building international partnerships through the arts.' He also praised H H Sayyid Bilarab's role in promoting art as a means of global communication. H E Sayyid Said bin Sultan al Busaidi, Undersecretary for Culture in Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, described the gift as a 'cultural and civilisational statement' aligned with Oman Vision 2040. H E Idris bin Abdulrahman al Khanjari, Oman's Permanent Representative to United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, emphasised the diplomatic significance of the gesture. The plaque is now displayed in WTO's Salle des Pas Perdus, a space reserved for artwork that celebrate dialogue and multilateral cooperation. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of WTO, said, 'A nice ceremony to unveil the beautiful painting gifted by Oman to WTO. The occasion also marked Oman's 25th year of accession to WTO. We appreciate Oman for this wonderful gift. Congratulations and many thanks to H H Sayyid Bilarab who took special interest in this project, to the artist, to the ambassador and the team for the hard work.'

Workshop looks at advancing coastal water sustainability
SUHAR: As part of its commitment to advancing scientific research and environmental sustainability, Sohar University hosted a high-level workshop on Monday entitled: 'Assessing the Impact of the Decision Support System for Coastal Waters (DISCO) on Stakeholders'. The event was organised in collaboration with the Directorate-General of Fisheries Research at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, and comes as part of the ongoing activities under the DISCO research project, which is strategically funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation and receives a funding support from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The workshop commenced with a keynote address by Prof Kelvin Bwalya, Director of Research Development at Sohar University. He began by warmly welcoming the delegates on behalf of Vice-Chancellor Dr Hamdan al Fazari, quoting, "I extend a warm welcome to all the delegates to this prestigious event. Sohar University is always happy to host internationally recognised events to reaffirm our commitment to meaningful research that aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Oman Vision 2040." Prof Bwalya further expressed pride in the university's collaboration on a Nasa-funded research project alongside esteemed partners from the USA and Oman's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. Dr Dawood al Yahyai, Director-General of Fisheries Research, delivered another keynote address. He emphasised the critical role of the DISCO system in advancing sustainable marine resource management and enabling data-driven environmental decision-making through cutting-edge monitoring technologies. Led by Prof Dale Kiefer, Principal Investigator from the University of Southern California, the research team presented the developmental journey of the DISCO system and its technical capabilities in monitoring oceanographic and environmental conditions of coastal waters. Presentations were also delivered by Suad al Bimani from the Marine Science and Fisheries Centre, highlighting the key challenges facing Oman's coastal ecosystems. Dr Scott Burg and Prof Rakesh Belwal from Sohar University presented the methodology used for stakeholder impact assessment, which is part of the new evaluation phase of the project supported by Nasa. The scientific programme featured six main sessions, including live demonstrations, scientific presentations and interactive discussions. The participants were divided into two parallel focus groups to evaluate user needs, provide feedback on the system's capabilities, and explore ways to enhance its adoption and impact across relevant sectors. The event brought together experts and representatives from major national institutions, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, Royal Navy of Oman, OQ, Majis Industrial Services, Sultan Qaboos University, the National University of Science and Technology, the University of Technology and Applied Sciences and Sohar University.

RO 2.1 billion disbursed in subsidies last year
MUSCAT, JUNE 3 Oman allocated more than RO 2.1 billion in 2024 to fund targeted support across critical sectors and public welfare programmes, as part of its broader fiscal strategy to promote economic resilience and social stability. According to official data released by the Ministry of Finance, the largest share—RO 565 million—was directed to the electricity sector to maintain affordability and ensure continued access to essential services. The government also committed RO 501 million to bolster the national social protection system, in line with the objectives of the Social Protection Law and Oman Vision 2040. In a move to strengthen fiscal health, RO 400 million was allocated for debt servicing. The petroleum sector received RO 232 million in fuel subsidies, helping cushion consumers from international price fluctuations. Key utilities and infrastructure were also prioritised. The water and sanitation sector was allocated RO 203 million, while the waste management sector received RO 71 million. The transport sector was granted RO 84 million to support mobility and logistics development. To ease the cost of living, the government allocated RO 24 million for food subsidies and RO 41 million to support interest payments on housing loans for eligible citizens. An additional RO 47 million was distributed to support other essential public services and initiatives. These allocations demonstrate Oman's commitment to maintaining essential public services while supporting vulnerable groups and advancing infrastructure investment. The 2024 spending priorities align closely with the nation's long-term development goals under Oman Vision 2040, which seeks to achieve balanced growth, fiscal sustainability, and improved quality of life.
