‘Disgust' among first words decoded in 2,000-year-old charred scroll

Scholars are decoding an ancient scroll that was one of hundreds charred to a crisp during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
The artifact, which is kept at the University of Oxford's Bodleian Libraries in the United Kingdom, is the fifth intact Herculaneum scroll to be virtually unrolled as part of the Vesuvius Challenge, a competition designed to accelerate the deciphering of the scrolls that form an unprecedented cache of information about ancient Rome and Greece.
Using artificial intelligence and other computer-based techniques to piece together the scroll and enhance the ink, the Vesuvius Challenge team has successfully generated the first images of text inside the scroll, known as PHerc. 172. The library group said Wednesday that it has begun to interpret the columns of text.
One of the first words to be translated was the ancient Greek διατροπή, meaning 'disgust,' which appears twice within a few columns of text, the Bodleian Libraries said.
'It's an incredible moment in history as librarians, computer scientists and scholars of the classical period are collaborating to see the unseen,' said Richard Ovenden, Bodley's librarian and Helen Hamlyn Director of the University Libraries, in a statement.
'The astonishing strides forward made with imaging and AI are enabling us to look inside scrolls that have not been read for almost 2,000 years.'
The scrolls would crumble if a researcher were to attempt to unfurl them by hand, likely destroying any trace of script.
Brent Seales, a professor of computer science at the University of Kentucky and cofounder of the Vesuvius Challenge, said the Oxford scroll, of all the Herculaneum scrolls scanned to date, contained the most recoverable text, with the chemical composition of the ink appearing more clearly in X-ray scans.
Researchers think the ink may contain a denser ingredient, such as lead, but further testing will be needed to identify the precise recipe that has made the ink so much more legible than other scrolls that have been part of the Vesuvius Challenge, the Bodleian Libraries said.
'Despite these exciting results, much work remains to improve our software methods so that we can read the entirety of this and the other Herculaneum scrolls,' Seales said in a statement.
Seales told CNN last year that the key challenge has been to virtually flatten the documents and distinguish the black ink from the carbonized papyri to make the Greek and Latin script readable.
The machine-learning techniques are not decoding the text but amplifying the readability of the ink used to write the scripts, he said. Transcription and translation of the text will rely on human scholars, including those from the University of Oxford, the library system said.
Researchers are further refining the images of the scroll in hopes it will improve the clarity of the lines of text visible and perhaps reach the innermost part of the carbonized scroll, where the title of the work may be preserved.

Named by Native American Algonquian tribes, the strawberry moon refers to June's full moon, which takes place after the brief fruit harvesting season that coincides with its annual appearance. While the moon's nickname isn't a specific reference to its color, there's a high likelihood that it will have a reddish hue when it nears the horizon. 'The origin of the name 'Strawberry Moon' has nothing to do with the Moon's hue or experience,' according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. 'A Moon usually appears reddish when it's close to the horizon because the light rays must pass through the densest layers of the atmosphere.' The nickname given to June's full moon varies based on tribes. The Haida people, an Indigenous group in the Pacific Northwest, refer to it as the 'berries ripen moon,' while the Muscogee call it the 'blackberry moon' and the Shawnee tribe know it as the 'raspberry moon." In the Northern Hemisphere, June's full moon will reach its lowest point all year. This year, however, the strawberry moon will be the lowest full moon in nearly two decades, due to what's called a 'major lunar standstill' — a phenomenon that occurs every 18.6 years, in which the moon reaches its furthest northern and southern points in the sky. The last major lunar standstill, according to CNN, occurred in 2006. 'The June full moon always rides low, as seen from the Northern Hemisphere. That's because a full moon stays more or less opposite the sun. Its nighttime path mimics the sun's daytime arc of the sun from six months ago, and six months hence,' according to EarthSky. Tonight, and into the early hours of tomorrow, June 11, we're expected to see the lowest full moon until 2043. The full moon, according to the BBC's Sky at Night Magazine, will rise just after sunset on June 10 and will reach its brightest point in the early hours of June 11. While a moonrise calculator can help provide a more accurate viewing time, the strawberry moon is expected to be at its brightest and fullest at 3:44 a.m. ET on June 11, according to EarthSky. Because the strawberry moon will appear low in the sky, USA Today suggests going to an outdoor location where the eastern horizon is visible at a low angle. No protective eyewear is required to view June's full moon, but binoculars may enhance your view of it. To optimize your smartphone photos of the full moon, Forbes suggests turning off the flash, turning on HDR mode and refraining from zooming in because it distorts the details. The center of the Milky Way will also appear near the strawberry moon, per NASA. June to August is recognized as 'Core Season' because the spiral galaxy's core is visible to stargazers. During this period, the Milky Way will be visible as a hazy band spanning across the sky. Five-armed creature — covered in ‘axes' — found off Taiwan. See the new species
In the rocky intertidal zones along the coast of Taiwan, a five-armed creature scuttles along the seafloor. Its brown, green and black body blends in with the colorful rocks as it glides across the bottom. The animal is a brittle star — and a new species. Brittle stars, or ophiurida, may look like classic starfish, but their long and flexible arms set them apart from their more rigid cousins. They can move quickly thanks to muscles that move a series of vertebrae-like structures linked together with ball-and-socket joints, according to the University of California at Berkeley. The new brittle star was collected off the southern coast of Taiwan and around a few barrier islands, according to a study published June 6 in the peer-reviewed European Journal of Taxonomy. The animal's central structure, or dorsal disc, is 'covered with fine granules,' according to the study, while the arms are covered in spines. The long arms are made up of spiny plates that fit together like puzzle pieces, photos show. The pattern on the arms also gives the new species its name, researchers said. Breviturma securis, or the axe brittle star, derives its name from the Latin word 'securis' meaning axe, 'referencing the axe-shaped dark patterns on the dorsal arm plates,' according to the study. The body as a whole is 'yellowish-gray to greenish-gray' with 'lighter and darker patches,' researchers said. 'These regions are adorned with discontinuous short dark lines that never form a reticular pattern,' according to the study. 'In juveniles, a dark 'star' may occasionally appear at the center of the disc but never connects to the arm base.' The brittle stars live in the sandy material below rocks from intertidal zones to shallow waters around 25 feet deep, researchers said. They are also commonly found in the same areas as other related brittle star species. Breviturma securis was previously misidentified as another species and appeared in a series of field guides and photographs under the wrong name, according to the study. The new research, with DNA confirmation, will allow these resources to be updated, researchers said. The holotype, or primary specimen used to describe the new species, was found in Taitung County on Taiwan's southeastern coast. The research team includes Kai Chang and Hsi-Te Shih.
