Roald Dahl sketches sell for almost £24,000 at auction

Independent5 hours ago

Original drawings by Roald Dahl which were found in an envelope have sold for almost £24,000.
The collection of sketches were produced by Dahl in black ball point pen for his memoir, Boy (1984), in which he describes his experience of growing up.
They were found in an envelope marked 'Dahl's drawings & odds and sods', which belonged to Ian Craig (1944-2023), art director at the author's publishing firm, Jonathan Cape, in London.
Mr Craig, who died in 2023, created the final illustrations for the book, inspired by Dahl's drawings.
The sketches were auctioned as part of the production archive from the late Mr Craig's estate and sold for £23,940 when they went under the hammer at Lyon & Turnbull in Edinburgh on Wednesday.
Dominic Somerville-Brown, Lyon & Turnbull's rare books & manuscripts specialist, said: 'This archive is unique in the Roald Dahl canon – it's very rare to find material by his own hand.
'This is reflected in the price achieved which also demonstrates the enduring popularity of his children's stories 35 years after his death.'
Dahl died in 1990 aged 74 and Boy is the only book which he produced illustrations for during his career of almost five decades.
In the book, he writes about his childhood exploits, including playing a prank with his friends on the local sweetshop owner, Mrs Pratchett, by putting a dead mouse in a gobstopper jar.
To accompany the story, Dahl drew a mouse lying on top of the sweets with its legs in the air.
The collection of sketches was bought by a single buyer who wished to remain anonymous.
A collection of rare manuscripts from Kilravock Castle, near Nairn in Highlands, also went under the hammer on Wednesday.
It included a selection of letters and documents signed by Mary Queen of Scots, her father, James V, son, James VI and I, and mother, Mary of Guise.
The collection sold for £124,614 to a number of different buyers as part of Lyon & Turnbull's Books & Manuscript auction.
Described as one of the most important collections of historical Scottish manuscripts ever offered for sale, it included a letter from Mary, Queen of Scots to the Laird of Kilravock, appointing him Sheriff for Inverness and dated September 26 1565.
The letter, signed by both the Queen ('Marie R.') and her then husband, Henry Stewart, Earl of Darnley ('Henry R.') sold for £15,120.
Another of her letters, again signed jointly by the pair, in which they remove the charge of Inverness Castle from the Laird of Kilravock and give it to the Earl of Huntly, dated October 9 1565, went for £11,340.
A group of five letters from her mother, Mary of Guise, sold for £6,930.
Cathy Tait, head of books & manuscripts at Lyon & Turnbull, said: 'We are absolutely delighted with the results of the archive from Kilravock Castle.
'There was a great deal of interest from a wide range of collectors, both private and institutional.'
'The documents sold today comprise a range of very old and important items, illuminating Scotland's history, and we are pleased that they have found good homes.'
All prices include buyer's premium.

Sammy Winward's daughter Mia Dunn tearfully claims she was 'emotionally neglected' by her mother and saw her 'for 10 minutes a day' - after being 'cut off' by her parents for joining OnlyFans

Sammy Winward's daughter Mia Dunn has made the bombshell claim she was 'emotionally neglected' by her mother, after being 'cut off' by her parents for pursuing a career on OnlyFans. The model, 19, joined the adult content site last year, angering both her mother and father, former Blackburn Rovers footballer David Dunn. And in a new interview with The Sun, Mia has claimed that during her childhood she felt 'lonely and controlled' and would sometimes only see her mother Sammy for '10 minutes a day' due to her filming schedule on Emmerdale. Breaking down in tears, she said: 'I was raised by a 19-year-old soap star... I may have been spoiled materially, but I was definitely neglected emotionally. 'I often felt lonely, picked on and controlled - about what I wore, what I said in public and most of all unsupported. 'At times her choices - like boyfriends - left me feeling scared and sometimes it felt like too much pressure was placed on my shoulders.' Mia said she and her parents are no longer on speaking terms after she launched her career on adult site OnlyFans, but she views her mother's reaction as hypocritical given she herself posed for lads magazines during her soap heyday. She said: 'I just think how, how can you not be accepting? You were younger than me when you stripped off sand now you've completely blocked me out of your life.' During the interview, Mia shared that due to her mother's absence, she was predominantly raised by her grandmother. She added that her parents split when she was young, and she met many of Sammy's later partners, noting one would 'yell at her' when she was just four years old. Mia went onto reveal that when she turned 16 she had enough of being 'controlled' by her mother, and so decided to move in with her dad, despite being estranged from him for many years. However, their relationship changed when she joined OnlyFans, and she claimed her father called her a 'w***e' and slammed the phone down on her when she attempted to reconnect with him. MailOnline has contacted a representative for Sammy Winward for comment. Last month, Mia revealed that she has now fled the UK, and has bought her first house in Mexico using the thousands she's earned on OnlyFans. In line with her usual X-rated posts, she shared a video of her twerking, showing off her bottom in a pair of skintight leggings and a skimpy bandeau. Smirking at the camera, across the clip she wrote: 'How I feel after 350,000 men payed [sic] for my house in a whole different country. Despite hailing from Bolton, Mia now spends most of her time in Toronto, Canada and Tulum, Mexico where she makes X-rated content for a living. And in March she revealed the staggering amount of cash she had made so far, as she celebrated one year on the platform. She took Instagram to boast that she'd raked in a jaw-dropping $420,000 (£322,725) in her first year, alongside a daring bikini-clad snap and slew of explicit videos. She captioned her post: 'One month and it'll be a whole year with you guys so unbelievably grateful for everyone who supported me watch out for a surprise on [OnlyFans] keep an eye out x'. However, her success has come at a cost, with Mia no longer on speaking terms with her famous family due to her controversial career choice. She recently claimed the family feud has reached a new low, claiming her dad David, called her a 'w***e' and slammed the phone down on her. She told The Sun: 'I tried to reconnect with my dad and he called me a w***e on the phone. I'm completely fully cut off and they want any sort of contact, which is really big shame because I thought I'd be the bigger person in the whole situation. 'I think it's crazy to have such anger towards me when I am in fact at the end of the day their daughter. 'I do totally get the fact that they don't love what I do, but at the same time, I am, I'm a human being and especially - I am the human being that came out of my mother.' Mia has also claimed that her mother is envious of her hugely successful career, after the pair previously shared a close bond - appearing on Loose Women together in 2021, and being described as like sisters. Mia, who goes by the name of Mia Kate Rose, told the publication: 'I think the main thing with my mum is that she was really young – 18 – when she had me. 'I think she's got some animosity towards me. I think she is maybe just jealous about me doing so well and so quickly. 'I think that's what my parents' issue is really. They think I've done it off their backs, but actually, behind the scenes, it takes a lot more work than just being their daughter.' Mia previously said that Sammy has prevented her from getting in touch and that other relatives have called and texted her with abusive messages when she tried to contact them. Speaking in August, she said: 'My mum has me blocked on everything. So yeah, she didn't contact me whatsoever. 'A few other family members have contacted me but I made the decision to let them cool off slightly because the messages they were sending weren't lovely.' The mother and daughter were thought to have been close, previously describing their relationship as being like 'best mates', but Mia admitted that was untrue and in fact they sometimes 'butted heads' due to their similarities. She said: 'I've honestly not got anything bad to say about any of them per se, but the way they've reacted to the situation personally, it just wouldn't even cross my mind to do that to my own child, I think.' While she remained hopeful at the time that she and Sammy could patch things up, Mia explained that she would be taking a step back until everyone had cooled off and said it would be down to her family to be the ones to reach out to make amends. She said: 'I feel like at this point it is going to have to be them coming to me because I've tried to maintain contact in the past and they just don't have any of it and then I end up getting like, all the abuse like through the phone, through text messages, calls. 'So I'm just going to wait until they come to me, maybe like in a calmer manner and you know, they're a little bit less fresh to the whole situation.'

Rachel Zelger's remake of popular musical branded ‘woke' after fans spot ridiculous warning signs at London theatre

A MAJOR new production of Evita has been slapped with a woke trigger warning for 'loud music and sudden noises'. Audiences are also told they could be upset by strobe lighting, flashing lights and haze. 5 5 The West End musical sees American star Rachel Zegler — as Eva Peron — sing its main ballad Don't Cry For Me Argentina from a balcony to passers-by outside the venue for free. Those who have paid up to £245 for tickets watch it on a screen inside the London Palladium. Crowds are gathering in the street every night to watch Zegler, 24, perform. Fans have been recording clips of her and posting them on social media, where they have amassed millions of views. Trigger warnings for shows have been criticised by acting great Sir Ian McKellen, 86. He said previously: 'I think it's ludicrous. I quite like to be surprised by loud noises and outrageous behaviour on stage.' Despite the warning and Zegler's free performance, the 130-minute show has been praised by paying punters. Evita began a 12-week run on Saturday and tells how Peron rose from poverty to become one of the most powerful women in Latin America as First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death at 33 in 1952. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote the musical and chart-topper Don't Cry for Me Argentina in 1978, with Madonna playing Peron in a film version 29 years ago. The decision to have Zegler sing outside came from director Jamie Lloyd. His version of Sunset Boulevard, for which Nicole Scherzinger recently won a Tony Award, also featured an outdoor section. Silly trigger warnings have hit several recent theatre shows. A production of Oliver! advises viewers it will include themes of poverty, hunger and crime. Phantom of the Opera audiences were told it would include smoke and bangs. A warning about nudity was put on a production of The Full Monty — a show about male strippers — while Matilda the Musical alerts the audience about the inclusion of a 'loud burp'. Zegler's stage role comes three months after her l ive-action remake of Snow White hit cinemas. The film had a £200million budget and made £148million at the box office as it was criticised for 'going woke.' Actors were replaced with CGI dwarves. And the plot was changed to be about the princess becoming a fearless leader, rather than ultimately finding love. Zegler said the Disney original was 'extremely dated when it comes to the ideas of women being in roles of power'. She added: 'People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it's, like, yeah, it is — because it needed that.' 5 5

Luke Littler ‘can't pass his driving test' as darts ace eyes buying hot hatchback after being driven around in a van

DARTS sensation Luke Littler has hit a roadblock in his incredible success story - as he "can't pass" his driving theory test. The arrows ace has had an unbelievable 18 months since first bursting onto the sporting scene with him becoming the youngest ever world champion and bagging an MBE. 5 5 5 The teenage wonderkid stunned the world when he was crowned the best darts player on the planet at just 17 years old in January. Luke, now 18, has gone on to win two World Series of Darts titles, 13 PDC titles and five major titles, as well as being crowned the youngest player to hit a televised nine-dart finish. His impressive accolades and lucrative sponsorship deals have even propelled him to a net worth of over £2million and helped him become one of the nation's most-loved sportsmen. But he's been lovingly mocked by his pal Morgan Burtwistle, better known as streamer AngryGinge, in recent days about the one thing Luke can't quite get to grips with. AngryGinge - the stand out celebrity in Soccer Aid last weekend - mocked Luke about not being able to pass his driving theory on national TV. The pair made their debut appearance on Celebrity Gogglebox on Friday night, when Luke's YouTube mate quizzed him on his overflowing trophy cabinet. Pointing to the impressive accolades sitting on a shelf next to the sofa, AngryGinge asks him: 'What have we got behind us here, Luke?' He laughs before correcting himself, adding: 'What haven't we got?' Smirking, Luke acknowledges his awards, including his incredible achievement in May when he became the first person to win five Premier League nights in the same year. The Nuke's even managed to sweep up a sixth triumph which took him past his own tally of nightly wins from last year, where he won a maiden title. Laughing, AngryGinge goes on: 'You get a bonus as well don't you? We can all do the maths, Luke. You're doing alright.' But then he lovingly mocks: 'You can do all this, but you can't pass your driving theory.' Luke, who laughs in response, previously revealed when he turned 17 that driving lessons were first on his agenda. But it appears he's been unable to hit the roads ever since as he continues to stall over his theory test. Following his show-stopping display at Alexandra Palace in January, Luke, of Warrington, Cheshire, said he was desperate to get behind the wheel. He revealed that his dream car is a modest Mercedes A-Class - a step up from his previous favourite Ford Focus - and he was eyeing one up with his £500,000 winnings. But the sportsman was initially forced to cancel his driving lessons due to burnout fears regarding his busy schedule. He had more bad luck when vandals trashed his van in May during an exhibition appearance in Norwich. Luke, who owns the vehicle and is driven around by his team, branded the thugs 'scum of the earth'. His representative has been contacted for comment. 5
