EU seeks to relax rules on turning away asylum-seekers
On Tuesday, the EU unveiled plans to relax the rules on sending asylum-seekers to third countries in the latest reform aimed at reducing migration to the bloc.
The European Commission said it proposed broadening the so-called "safe third country" concept, which allows member states to "consider an asylum application inadmissible when applicants could receive effective protection" elsewhere.

EU chief backs ICC after US sanctions judges over Netanyahu warrant
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has reiterated European backing for the International Criminal Court, after the US slapped sanctions on four judges it accuses of 'illegitimate and baseless actions' against Washington and its allies, including Israel. 'The Commission fully supports the [ICC and] its officials. The ICC holds perpetrators of the world's gravest crimes to account [and] gives victims a voice,' the European Commission chief posted on X. 'It must be free to act without pressure. We will always stand for global justice [and] the respect of international law.' On Thursday, the Trump administration followed through on a threat to sanction officials associated with the court, issuing sanctions against four judges. Two of the judges, Reine Alapini-Gansou of Benin and Beti Hohler of Slovenia, were sanctioned for their role in the ICC issuing arrest warrants for Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in November, according to the US State Department.

The EU gave its backing on Friday to the International Criminal Court (ICC) after Washington imposed sanctions on four ICC judges, and EU member Slovenia said it would push Brussels to use its power to ensure the U.S. sanctions could not be enforced in Europe. "The ICC holds perpetrators of the world's gravest crimes to account and gives victims a voice. It must be free to act without pressure," European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen said on social media platform X. Antonio Costa, president of the European Council, which represents national governments of the 27 member states, called the court "a cornerstone of international justice" and said its independence and integrity must be protected. France opens 'complicity in genocide' probe over blocked Gaza aid
French anti-terror prosecutors have opened a probe into "complicity in genocide" and "incitement to genocide" over French-Israelis suspected of having blocked aid intended for war-torn Gaza, a source close to the case said Friday. The investigation comes after the Jewish French Union for Peace (UFJP) and a French-Palestinian victim filed a legal complaint in November, leveling accusations of "organizing, participating in and calling for the participation in concrete activities to block humanitarian aid" for Gaza, "including physically preventing the passage of trucks at border checkpoints controlled by the Israeli army."
