Author gives unique perspective on ‘Home, Identity, Belonging in the UAE'

Gulf Today15-04-2025

The UAE presents a rare opportunity to rewrite our stories, free from others' labels, and embrace a future defined by our own terms. Bosnian-born author Nadina Ronc stated this while talking to Gulf Today. Her memoir 'Daughters of Dissidents Need Not Apply' was recently published by The Dreamwork Collective in the UAE.
While reflecting on home and belonging she said, 'As a refugee, I struggled with questions of identity, feeling torn between my Bosnian heritage and a British society that never fully embraced me. For many, searching for a home may never reach a definitive conclusion. But in this ongoing quest, we understand that belonging is not a destination but a journey. It's found in the quiet moments of connection: a shared conversation with a colleague, the comfort of a familiar accent, or the joy of seeing a neighbourhood that feels like 'home'.'
The UAE's population totals 9.36 million, with 8.84 million immigrants. Dubai is home to 3.6 million people, 75% of whom are foreign-born. All this raises complex questions about identity, belonging, and the elusive concept of home in a transient world.
For many immigrants in the UAE, home is fluid and evolving—a blend of memories, relationships, and places that feel alive. Many seek distance from governments, cultures, or identities that no longer fit. The country offers the chance to reinvent oneself and find new belonging. For those of us carrying the weight of war or persecution, the anonymity allows us to shed past identities and forge new stories, free from old labels.'
On Immigration and Identity
'Immigration is rarely as simple as seeking a better life. For those fleeing war, political persecution, or instability, the process carries immense emotional weight—leaving behind family, language, and the comforting familiarity of home.
In the UAE, however, immigration often represents a conscious choice—a decision to trade one kind of uncertainty for another, seeking the potential for opportunity and success. Yet even voluntary migration involves trade-offs. While the UAE offers freedom, it also demands flexibility. You must navigate a society that balances cosmopolitan influences with conservative traditions. The mix of cultures creates a dynamic social environment where individuals rise through skills and aspirations, transcending cultural and geographical divides. By maintaining their traditional identities and social circles, Emiratis coexist with a highly diverse population of over 200 nationalities. This pluralistic society fosters a sense of belonging within smaller communities based on shared interests, professions, or cultures while contributing to the country's collective progress.' Nadina fled Bosnia as a child in 1992 and found refuge in the UK.
'Writing my memoir was more than an exercise in storytelling; it was an effort to reclaim autonomy over my narrative. Dubai offered a unique platform to explore these themes further, and that is why I decided to publish my book here. When I began working with my editor at The Dreamwork Collective, she didn't just help me write; she guided me to open a portal to my past, to revisit the child I once was through the eyes of the adult I've become. I began to see the countless obstacles I had to overcome to get to where I am today. That process of truly diving into my past, of peeling back those layers of fear and memory, allowed me to take the reader on a raw and bumpy journey with me.'
The 'Daughters of Dissidents Need Not Apply' published by The Dreamwork Collective is available on their website and on Amazon.

Learning, adaptability ‘key to success in hotel industry'

Many times over have we heard about humility and being a man-for-others as ingredients for success – even as success could be taken mundanely since mankind is human and definitely not naturally divine. These, again, resonated from the third anniversary celebration of the Indonesian UAE Hotelier Community (IUHC), formally established in Dubai in 2022 that operates under the auspices of the Indonesian diplomatic and consular missions. Meet Jamil Bachruddin, 24 years in the industry that started in his hometown of Surabaya in Java and Dwi Utari, 23 years and also counting for more memorable experiences since joining the hectic-yet-fun-and-thrilling profession from her birthplace of Jakarta. 'One key lesson is that adaptability is non-negotiable. The industry evolves consistently – guest expectations, technology, and even global challenges change the way we operate. Being open to learning and adapting is what sets great hoteliers apart,' Bachruddin told Gulf Today. Utari said: 'Keep learning. Never lose the essence of hospitality. It is a gift we give every day.' They are among the founding members of the IUHC, the membership of which had increased to 1,616: 1,257 in Dubai; 253, Abu Dhabi including the Al Ain Eastern Municipal Region; 46, Ras Al Khaimah, 46; 37, Fujeirah; 13, Sharjah; and three, Umm Al Quwain. From chief guest, Consul General in Dubai and the Northern Emirates Denny Lesmana, a panelist at the 'Inspirational Talk: Challenges and Opportunities in Hospitality Employment in the UAE' alongside Bachruddin and Utari: 'Consistently demonstrate your best abilities. With a strong work ethic and adequate skills, it is expected that more companies in the UAE will entrust strategic positions to Indonesian workers.' Lesmana described the existence of the IUHC – a project of his predecessor, Candra Negara – as 'significant;' for, it serves as a forum for shared experiences towards more sharpened competencies 'within a multicultural and competitive work environment.' He added: 'IUHC represents the face of Indonesian professionals, able to occupy various positions in the UAE hospitality sector; demonstrating that Indonesian workers possess high quality competitiveness.' Interviewed, Bachruddin, Fourth-Middle East Regional Operations director, into the digital transformation and streamlining of the operations of the hospitality sector, said: 'How you treat your team reflects on how they treat your guests. Empower your people; lead by example. Never stop listening, whether it is to guests, colleagues, or the subtle signals of change in the market.' JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai-Front Office manager Utari said: 'Leadership is about empowerment, consistency and compassion. Be visible; lead by example; stay humble; be attentive to details, strategies, and pre-planning. Celebrate your team's efforts often. When people feel seen, heard and valued, they bring their best selves to the job.' 'From Vision to Recognition' was the theme of the IUHC anniversary. The Awards Committee, members and allied industry players, unanimously decided that Accor Dubai Deira Cluster-Rooms Division manager Savitri Rahmadani and Emirates Culinary Guild-Public Relations vice president/Taaza Healthy Food Industries LLC-Culinary head Atim Suyatim merit the Lifetime Awards. Voted as well were the best, across the rank-and-file and management levels, in 11 award categories divided into five divisions: Rooms, Food & Beverage Service, Culinary, Administration & General/Sales & Marketing/Engineering, Spa & Recreation. Rahmadani began her career as a hotel receptionist in Surabaya. Nineteen years thereafter, she has become 'known for her dedication to operational excellence, mentoring emerging talents, and driving guest satisfaction through service leadership.' From being a hotel pastry chef in 1997 in South Sumatra, Suyatim, with a 28-year work experience has 'become a respected leader in institutional catering and professional development; recognised for his mentorship, industry advocacy, and commitment to promoting Indonesian talent on international platforms.' Bucharaddin to all aspiring hoteliers: 'Do not rush. Each role, each shift, and each challenge is a chance to grow. The best leaders in this industry are those who understand it from the ground up.' Utari said: 'Be patient. Be curious. Keep attention to details. Stay humble. Every guest interaction is a moment to make an impact. The most meaningful growth often comes though challenges; embrace them.'

In the Middle East, Al Mahra Resort by The Crest Collection – the brand's first resort and its debut in the United Arab Emirates – will open in early 2027, to be followed by the brand's first property in Saudi Arabia, opening in Riyadh in 2028. This expansion into East Asia and the Middle East builds on the brand's growing traction in Southeast Asia. The luxury travel sector is projected to grow from US$1.4 trillion in 2024 to US$2.2 trillion by 2030, driven not just by affluence among the wealthy but also by younger travellers who are willing to pay top dollar for meaningful experiences[1]. With luxury travellers drawn to destinations that excite, along with surprising environments and experiences that speak to their individuality[2], it is clear that the true essence of luxury lies in celebrating unique stories rather than uniformity. Abu Dhabi's new island will include a 10km fitness track, a beach club and a five-star resort

Abu Dhabi's newest island is coming and it's no regular island. Fahid Island, located between Yas Island and Saadiyat Island, has now been formally introduced to the public and we have one word: wow. Set to open in 2029, when phase one of the project is set to be complete, it will include amenities like a 10km running and cycling track, a beach club, a five-star resort and a pedestrian shopping street. Fahid Island has been designed with wellness in mind, with plenty of footpaths connecting all corners of its 2.7 million sqm, designed to get residents and visitors' steps up. While some amenities will be reserved for residents, the general public will be able to access its Berm Park, a 10km wellness and fitness corridor with running tracks and three cycling routes, as well as the 4.6km of beaches and a beach club. Then there's Coral Drive, Abu Dhabi's answer to LA's Rodeo Drive – a shopping destination meant to be walked, not driven through. No shops have been announced yet but we're expecting a high-low mix of big names. The island was also designed to maximise the time Abu Dhabians can spend outdoors throughout the year. To make sure your walks along the island aren't insufferable once the heat kicks in, they're making sure there's enough shade everywhere (from trees but also fabricated shade) and drinking water fountains throughout. Plus, the materials used for the floors will absorb less heat, a move pets will certainly welcome. In fact, Fahid Island is the world's first Fitwel-certified island, a certification that looks at how communities are built to promote and build health. As a self-contained island, Fahid will also have a prestigious British school joining the grounds (which is yet to be announced), a mosque, a waterside fitness centre and a promenade for drinks and bites with sea views. Want to move in? Join the club. The first phase of the project, the Fahid Beach Residences, will be made up of seven mid-rise buildings, with 65 apartments each. They start at Dhs3.5 million for a one-bedroom apartment and will go on sale soon, although an exact date is yet to be announced. Considering how quickly the Abu Dhabi market has been moving, we wouldn't be surprised if this one sells out in a day as well… More Abu Dhabi real estate These are the most popular places to buy and rent in Abu Dhabi right now No gatekeeping round here Modon's Muheira towers on Reem Island sell out on launch day This is pretty cool A new village in Abu Dhabi completely sold out in 24 hours A little slice of Tuscany right in the capital
