UFC Atlanta: Miranda Maverick previews fight with Rose Namajunas
Miranda Maverick opens up about the challenges of facing former training partner Rose Namajunas at UFC on ESPN 69 on June 14.
Miranda Maverick is happy to put her friendship with Rose Namajunas aside for one night at UFC on ESPN 69, and she is fully confident that the feeling is mutual.
Maverick (15-5 MMA, 8-3 UFC) is set to face longtime training partner and former UFC titleholder Namajunas (13-7 MMA, 11-6 UFC) in the women's flyweight co-main event of the June 14 card at State Farm Arena in Atlanta (ESPN, ESPN+).
Although past instances of this situation have led to awkwardness in the pre-fight build or poor contests inside the cage, Maverick thinks is a different circumstance. She said this possibility has been discussed personally between and with their immediate coaches for some time, and believe UFC matchmaker Mick Maynard catching wind of that is what led to the booking.
"I think both of us are professional enough – it's not like we have to go in there and sh*t talk and hate each other to really win," Maverick told MMA Junkie Radio. "It's just a matter of going in (and) showing our skills. We've always said we would fight each other. When we spar, we said it would be a heck of a charity event to just put on live sparring where people could come in and watch the fighters get rounds. (I'm) really excited to show the fans what we've both been working on."
With both women training out the Denver area, Blanchfield said a respectful pact was put forth to maintain the integrity of the bout. She has split her training camp at Easton Training Center and Pound for Pound Muay Thai, while Namajunas has worked out of Genesis Training Academy and a private facility for her preparation.
According to Maverick, coaches from both sides agreed to keep on their side of the line, which she said is for the betterment of everyone. Still, though, there are many vivid memories of past time training together, and Maverick said that is part of the challenge around this particular fight.
"I think this may be the toughest, not necessarily because she's the toughest fighter, but because we know each other so much better," Maverick said. "We've sparred and trained so much together that we know each other's weaknesses and strengths. We know how each other fight. Each of our camps know exactly what the other's game plan is likely going to be, but it's one of those that's going to be a tough fight mentally on us, and we're going to have to use our fight IQ more than anymore."
For Maverick, the opportunity to face a former UFC champion with the notoriety of Namajunas is a potentially career-altering moment. It will put her into the upper echelon of the 125-pound weight class, so her focus can be on nothing else other than getting the job done.

UFC return confirmed: Amanda Nunes isn't coming back just for a good time, but a long time

NEWARK, N.J. – Amanda Nunes is returning to the UFC for a good time but also perhaps a long time. During a fan Q&A on Wednesday at Prudential Center ahead of Saturday's UFC 316 ceremonial weigh-ins, Nunes (23-5 MMA, 16-2 UFC) confirmed her comeback to the cage and added that it won't be just a one-off. Advertisement "I'm ready to stay here," Nunes said. "I'm going to take the belt back. I'm going to defend as long as possible. As long as my body can handle, I'm going to be here." In recent months, Nunes has teased a comeback. She was spotted in the crowd at a press conference in March and nodded her head when it was suggested she might return. She's also posted several times cryptically on social media. Nunes' official comeback confirmation comes on the eve of a crucial fight for the women's bantamweight division as her two-time rival Julianna Peña looks to defend the title vs. Kayla Harrison, a fighter Nunes has trained with in the past. Nunes will likely face the winner, and she doesn't particularly seem to care who that is. "I love this. I'm so excited. To see my name all over, that's what I'm here for," Nunes said. "To come back, I'm ready for tomorrow. I'm ready to fight. ... I have Kayla by decision. Honestly, I'm a champion. Either one, I'm going to be ready for. Let's go." While Nunes passed on picking which fight she'd like more, she stayed respectful when she spoke of Harrison (18-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC). When asked about Peña (11-5 MMA, 8-3 UFC) and her trash talk, Nunes wasn't as kind to "The Venezuelan Vixen." Advertisement "I just think Julianna has to shut up and fight and stop crying all the time about things," Nunes said. "Just face the girl, and that's it. Like, the girl is there. Tomorrow, Kayla is going to show up. I want to see if she shows up, as well. Kayla is going to bring it for her, though. She thinks it's going to be easy? She's delusional if she thinks it's going to be easy. Nunes, 37, retired from mixed martial arts competition in June 2023 following a successful title defense vs. Irena Aldana. The win came on the heels of a 1-1 series vs. Peña, who shockingly pulled off an upset before Nunes got her revenge. Dominick Cruz: Patchy Mix fighting 'real' Mario Bautista in UFC debut says a lot about him

Dominick Cruz knows Patchy Mix is confident based on who he's facing in his UFC debut. Mix (20-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) meets streaking bantamweight Mario Bautista (15-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) on Saturday's UFC 316 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) main card at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Advertisement The former Bellator champion is stepping in on three weeks' notice to replace Marlon Vera against Bautista. Cruz says Bautista is no joke and is a legitimate and risky test for Mix. "He's going to find out the level he's at because Bautista is real," Cruz told MMA Junkie. "He just beat (Jose) Aldo, and Aldo is still one of the best ever. He's just defensively really good. And what Bautista did was he used so much offense and so many different looks that it kind of kept Aldo on the backfoot and kept him from throwing. That's the amount of offense this guy has and the amount of looks, and the amount of cardio because he also trains at elevation, if I remember, too. So that adds (to it). ... (Mix) grapples a lot. He has a nasty guillotine. He's choked a lot of people out with these guillotines. "I don't know if you can get away with guillotines as easy against Bautista as you can in these other shows. I just don't know, but that's why this is fun. Patchy Mix is a complete question mark. We don't know how great he is and this fight will show because Bautista is one of the toughest guys in the division. But it says a lot about Patchy Mix and how good he knows he is because to take that fight – not a lot of people know about Bautista and not a lot of people would have taken that fight. I think Patchy is a beast. When I watch his fights, he's a freaking beast. But like I said, you see guys like that then they get to the UFC and you're like, I don't know what it is. It might be the level of athletes they're competing against, or it might be the whole shebang, the whole atmosphere." With that being said, former two-time UFC bantamweight champion Cruz thinks Mix will live up to the hype. Advertisement "Patchy is a champ so I'm going to go ahead and assume he handles it flawlessly, and we're going to see a champion fighting Bautista, and he's going to get the job done," Cruz said. "If he can do his thing, he should be able to hold down Bautista, take his back, throw a body triangle, and maybe strangle him with a rear-naked choke, or just keep taking him down, rinse and repeat. ... He's an exciting prospect in the division, no question." This article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: Dominick Cruz praises Patchy Mix for facing 'real' test in UFC debut
