Chinese spying on Dutch industries 'intensifying': Dutch defence minister
By Xinghui Kok
SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Chinese efforts to spy on the Dutch are intensifying, with the focus on semiconductors, Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans said on Saturday.
"The semiconductor industry, which we are technologically leading, or technology advanced, of course, to get that intellectual property - that's interesting to China," Brekelmans said in an interview on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue security meeting in Singapore.
The Dutch military intelligence agency said in its annual report in April last year that Chinese spies have targeted the Dutch semiconductor, aerospace and maritime industries to try to strengthen China's armed forces.
When asked if the spying had stopped, Brekelmans said: "It's continuing. In our newest intelligence reports, our intelligence agency said that the biggest cyber threat is coming from China, and that we do see most cyber activity when it comes to us being as from China. That was the case last year, but that's still the case. So we only see this intensifying."
China's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Beijing routinely denies allegations of cyber espionage and says it opposes all forms of cyberattack.
Dutch intelligence agencies first publicly attributed cyber espionage to China last year, when they said state-backed cyber spies had gained access to a Dutch military network in 2023.
Brekelmans said security is becoming increasingly important for the Netherlands as China is "using their economic position for geopolitical purposes and also to pressure us".
The minister said the Netherlands has introduced instruments to protect key industries and vital interests but the country and region also need to reduce their dependency on China for critical raw materials.
"Both on the European Union level, but also on the national level, we need to make bigger steps in order to reduce those dependencies."

Prediction: Nvidia Stock Will Soar in 2025 (and It's Due to This 1 Number)
Nvidia stock has surged in recent years as the company led the artificial intelligence boom. Moving forward, one particular element in Nvidia's earnings reports should impress long-term investors. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has already delivered spectacular gains for investors, advancing more than 1,400% over the past five years. This is thanks to the company's dominant position in the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution and the resulting explosion in earnings growth. Quarter after quarter, Nvidia's revenue has advanced in the double or triple digits and reached record levels. In recent times, though, against a backdrop of import tariff uncertainties and restrictions on AI chip exports to China, investors have worried about growth ahead, which has weighed on Nvidia's stock, bringing it down 29% from the start of the year to its lowest point in April. Today, along with the rest of the market, Nvidia has rebounded from those lows. This comes amid optimism that the tariff picture won't be as dark as originally expected and as tech customers continue to spend big on Nvidia's products and services. Now, my prediction is that Nvidia's positive momentum may not be over, and the stock will soar in 2025 thanks to one particular number. Let's explore this further. So, first, a quick look at why Nvidia shares have skyrocketed over the past several years. The company is known for its graphics processing units (GPUs), high-powered chips with the ability to handle many tasks simultaneously. They primarily served the gaming market many years ago, but then Nvidia recognized their broad potential and expanded their use into other areas -- and AI stood out as a market where GPUs could shine. In fact, GPUs are central to the most important AI tasks, such as the training and inference of large language models (LLMs), so these models can then go on to do their job of solving complex problems. Nvidia also built out an entire ecosystem of supporting products and services, and all of this has resulted in mind-boggling growth. In the recent fiscal year, revenue soared 114% to $130 billion. This continued into the recent quarter, and the earnings numbers have proven that Nvidia's customers continue to pour investments into the company's products. Revenue advanced 69% to $44 billion during the period, and Nvidia noted a significant increase in demand for inference -- the "thinking" process LLMs go through to tackle questions and problems. Reports from Nvidia customers, such as Meta Platforms and Alphabet, support this positive earnings trend we saw in Nvidia's fiscal 2026 first quarter. These players have said in recent times that AI remains a priority, and they will continue to invest significantly in it -- Meta even increased its capital spending forecast for the year. All of this supports the idea of Nvidia's stock market gains this year. But one number in particular should encourage investors to get in on Nvidia -- and it could help the stock soar in the months ahead. This is a number that reflects the company's high profitability on sales. I'm talking about Nvidia's gross margin. The company has maintained a gross margin above 70% in recent quarters, with it even reaching into the mid-70% range. Earlier this year, Nvidia predicted that first-quarter gross margin would fall to the low-70% range amid the launch of its Blackwell architecture. (Launches involve extra costs, and the Blackwell rollout is particularly complex due to all its features and that it's customizable.) In the recent quarter, Nvidia met its goal, with gross margin settling at 71.3%, excluding the impact of a $1 billion charge related to chips meant for export to China. (If we include the impact of the charge, gross margin on a non-GAAP (non-generally accepted accounting process) basis was 61% and about 60% on a GAAP basis.) From here, Nvidia expects gross margins of 71.8% and 72% in the second quarter, on a GAAP and non-GAAP basis, respectively. The company says that Blackwell will drive continued progress, with forecasts of gross margin in the mid-70% range by later this year. So, Nvidia has delivered strong profitability and aims to continue doing so. Of course, the company still faces some headwinds, particularly U.S. restrictions on chip exports to China. If this situation worsens, it could put the brakes on stock performance, at least in the near term. It will be important to watch how this story plays out. But even with that challenge in mind, I remain optimistic, considering Nvidia's impressive profitability on sales over time. And the ongoing demand for its products and services should keep that momentum on track. That's why I predict that, thanks to Nvidia's solid level of profitability, the stock will soar in 2025. Disqualification drama erupts as results overturned after Oscar Piastri victory
F1 fans and commentators are questioning why Max Verstappen wasn't disqualified from the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday night, after Oscar Piastri powered to victory to extend his lead in the championship. Piastri secured his fifth win of the season, winning from pole position ahead of McLaren teammate Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc. The win for Piastri extended the Aussie's lead in the driver standings to 10 points from Norris, with McLaren winning seven races out of nine so far. But the victory was overshadowed by drama and controversy for Verstappen, who many believe should have been disqualified. The defending world champion crossed the finish line in fifth position, but was later relegated to P10 after stewards overturned the result. Verstappen was hit with a 10-second penalty for deliberately colliding with Mercedes driver George Russell late in the race. The incident occurred after a safety car with five laps remaining, which saw Verstappen end up on slower hard tyres against his rivals on softs. He immediately lost third position to Leclerc, and then went off track as he tried to defend against Russell. Red Bull then ordered Verstappen to let Russell past because they knew he was too fast on the softer tyres, and the Dutch driver initially appeared to do so. But as Russell went around him, Verstappen sped up and caused a collision, spearing into the Mercedes driver. It was the second time Verstappen had collided with Russell, and the Dutchman was also investigated post-race for an incident with Leclerc. Stewards took no further action over the Leclerc incident, but hit Verstappen with a 10-second penalty for ramming into Russell. The penalty saw Verstappen plummet five places in the final standings, although former world champion Nico Rosberg said he was lucky not to be disqualified. "It looked like a very intentional retaliation," Roseberg said on Sky Sports. "Wait for the opponent, go ramming into him, just like you felt the other guy rammed into you at turn one. "I think the rules would be a black flag, yes. If you wait for your opponent to bang into him, that's a black flag (disqualification). That is bad, that is seriously bad. You need to black flag that, there's no other way. That's something that is extremely unacceptable." Verstappen didn't deny after the race that his actions were deliberate. "Does it matter?" he said. "I prefer to speak about the race than just one single moment." Russell was scathing in his assessment of Verstappen, who is now just one more penalty away from a race ban. "I was as surprised as you guys were," he told reporters. "I've seen these manoeuvres before on simulator games and in go-karting, but never in F1. "Ultimately, we came home in P4 and he came home in P10. I don't know what was going through his mind. It felt deliberate in the moment so, yeah, it was a bit surprising. It's a shame that something like that continues to occur. It seems totally unnecessary and it never seems to benefit himself." RELATED: Lewis Hamilton makes staggering call on Oscar Piastri winning title Oscar Piastri's telling response after Aussie driver sacked by F1 team Piastri won by 2.4 seconds in what was the third McLaren 1-2 of the season. "We executed everything we needed to. I am really enjoying it," he said post-race. "The pace was good and we could turn it on when we needed to. The team gave me a great car and winning races is a lot of fun." Norris said: "Oscar drove a very good race. I didn't have the pace to match him but I gave it my best shot. It's a long race, anything could have happened at the end of the race. We both got pretty sideways with the safety car restart. It was a good, fun race and for us as a team to finish one-two is even better." Verstappen is an absolute disgrace 'suddenly accelerated' well then it's quite clear this wasn't a defensive move gone wrong he obviously rammed into him on purpose? You cannot do that at all, you have to ban him for Canada and no less? What a joke, anyone else and they're banned — Dan Castell (@_Dan_Castell) June 1, 2025 You should count your blessings that Verstappen didn't get disqualified for that demolition job he pulled on Russell. 🤫 — 𝓕𝓮𝓻𝓻𝓪𝓻𝓲 𝓕𝓸𝓻𝓮𝓿𝓮𝓻 (@Ferrari_Power1) June 1, 2025 Verstappen should have just been disqualified. He doesn't deserve a point. He doesn't deserve to be a champion — simon burns (@simonburns74) June 1, 2025 Verstappen should have been black flagged for what he did. Or disqualified from Canadian GP #f1 — Jeff Rooker (@JeffRookerj) June 1, 2025 Absolutely embarrassing & disgraceful behavior by Max Verstappen. Not how an F1 champion should act. — Steve E.
