Tiernan scores twice as Angel City outlasts Spirit 4-3
Associated Press
Riley Tiernan scored her second goal of the match in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time to give Angel City a 4-3 win over the Washington Spirit in the National Women's Soccer League on Friday night.
Elsewhere in the NWSL, the Houston Dash fell 2-1 at home to Racing Louisville and the Seattle Reign edged the Kansas City Current 1-0.
Tiernan opened the scoring at Audi Field with a quick finish from the center of the box in the eighth minute. Gisele Thompson scored off a cross from her sister Alyssa Thompson in the 22nd minute to make it 2-0. It was the first time sisters had combined for a goal in NWSL history.
Spirit defender Esme Morgan scored her first NWSL goal in the 30th and Gift Monday finished into an open net in the 40th to make it 2-2 at halftime.
Angel City's Katie Zelem made it 3-2 with a left-footed shot in the 72nd minute, but the Spirit tied it again Morgan's second of the match.
Christen Press flicked on a corner kick for Tiernan's winner, her fifth goal of the season.
Angel City (3-2-2) interim head coach Sam Laity received a red card after Tiernan's winning goal. It is the first time that the Spirit (4-3-0) has lost two consecutive NWSL matches since September 2023. Sears scores in 2-1 comeback win for Louisville
Emma Sears scored in the 70th minute to give Racing Louisville the come-from-behind win at Shell Energy Stadium.
The 24-year-old winger scored her fourth of the season on a breakaway counterattack. Although her strike went straight at Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell, the ricochet skidded off Campbell and into the net.
Houston (2-4-1) had taken the lead on Avery Patterson's goal on the edge of the box in the eighth minute.
After lightning in the area delayed the game for nearly an hour, Kayla Fischer tied things up at 1-1 by hitting a long-range goal in the 20th.
Louisville (2-3-2) has now taken seven points from its last three away matches. Biyendolo nets first Reign goal
Lynn Biyendolo scored the game's only goal in the 37th minute at Lumen Field.
Reign (3-2-2) coach Laura Harvey then opted to sit back in a defensive game plan. In the second half, the Current (5-2-0) outshot their opponent 10-1, 3-0 on target.
Kansas City head coach Vlatko Andonovski brought reigning NWSL MVP Temwa Chawinga, who has been dealing with a hip issue, off the bench in the 61st minute but she could not find the equalizer.
It is the second consecutive defeat for Kansas City after going undefeated through the first five weeks of the season.

2025 NWSL Championship to be played in San Jose at Bay FC's stadium
The 2025 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Championship is heading to the Bay Area. San Jose's 18,000-seat PayPal Park, the home stadium of Bay FC and Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes, will host this year's title match, the league announced Thursday. The championship will take place on Saturday, Nov. 22 with a 5 p.m. PT kickoff for the fourth straight year. It will be broadcast on CBS and stream on Paramount+. Advertisement 'We're thrilled to bring the NWSL Championship back to the West Coast and to a region with as rich a history in women's soccer as the Bay Area,' NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman said in a news release. 'This community's passion for the game, combined with the excitement surrounding one of our newest teams in Bay FC, makes it the perfect setting to celebrate the league's top talent and crown our next champion.' The Bay Area houses some of the top collegiate programs in the nation in Stanford, Santa Clara, and Cal. In 2010, the Bay Area-based FC Gold Pride claimed the title in the now-defunct Women's Professional Soccer league with a roster bursting with star players, including Marta, Christine Sinclair, Shannon Boxx and Camille Abily. 'The history of women's soccer runs deeply and strongly in the Bay Area,' said Bay FC co-founder and former USWNT player Brandi Chastain. 'From the roster of the national team players born and raised here to the first-ever professional domestic league champions coming from here, our community's fabric is woven with the greatest the game has to offer.' In its inaugural 2024 season, Bay FC averaged 13,000 fans at PayPal Park, the fifth-highest attendance in the league. It marks the second time in three years that the NWSL championship will take place on the West Coast, with its milder winters. Last year, the final between the Orlando Pride and Washington Spirit was held at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. In 2023, San Diego's Snapdragon Stadium hosted the title match between Gotham FC and Seattle Reign, and in 2022, the title game took place at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. Like last year, eight of the 14 teams in the NWSL will make it to the postseason, playing in four quarterfinals between Nov. 7-9. Two will air on ESPN/ABC, while the other two will be split between CBS/Paramount+ and Prime Video. The semifinals will be held the weekend of Nov. 14-16 and will be shared by CBS/Paramount+ and ESPN/ABC. Tickets for the 2025 final go on sale in August. Weary Gotham FC looking to get back into NWSL playoff picture
There's a busy schedule, and then there's what Gotham FC has. 'I don't think there's a team that works harder in this league than Gotham,' owner Carolyn Tisch Blodgett said last weekend. Advertisement Three weeks ago, the team was in Monterrey, Mexico, claiming the inaugural CONCACAF W Champions Cup — an achievement that was celebrated Tuesday night, when the Empire State Building was lit up in Gotham blue. Then it was off to international duty for many of the team's standouts. Then, Gotham (3W-3D-5L) returned to regular-season NWSL play, losing a 2-1 decision to first-place Kansas City on Saturday that dropped them to 10th place in the 14-team league. Advertisement Two more NWSL tilts to try to claw up the standings — starting with Friday night's road game against the Utah Royals (9:30 p.m. Eastern) — and then it's time for a month-plus-long international break that for a sizable chunk of the roster isn't a break at all as they scatter to the corners of the world to play for their national teams. 'Our team knows that if they want it easy, they probably wouldn't have come to Gotham,' Tisch Blodgett said. 'We have high standards. New York, New Jersey has high standards, and players come here because they want to compete with the best.' To that end, five Gotham players soon will depart for the summer's marquee event, the Women's Euro: forward Esther González (Spain), goalie Ann-Katrin Berger (Germany), defender Jess Carter (England), forward Jéssica Silva (Portugal) and the team's newest signing, former Harvard midfielder Josefine Hasbo (Denmark). Forward Gabi Portilho (Brazil) will participate in Copa América. Advertisement Gotham FC owner Carolyn Tisch Blodgett says her squad has 'high standards.' Getty Images And midfielder Rose Lavelle is expected to join back up with the U.S. women's national team for a round of friendlies after returning from an ankle injury last weekend. How about a lull later in the summer? Nope. On Thursday, Gotham announced four extra matches for August through October as they look to defend their W Champions Cup title. Advertisement 'I think people are still understanding the significance of that in the global game,' Tisch Blodgett said of the CONCACAF trophy. 'When we came in as new owners last year, we set a vision to be the first global women's sports franchise, and this is a critical step in that.' Gotham FC coach Juan Carlos Amoros said he believes his team is in a 'good place' despite their recent struggles in NWSL games. EM Dash-Imagn Images But first, of course, the not-so-small matter of working their way back into at least the NWSL's top eight and a playoff spot. Gotham has lost three straight regular-season matches on either side of all their extracurriculars, though head coach Juan Carlos Amoros, typically the optimist, said Thursday, 'I think the team is in a good place.' Still, the stakes against Utah (1W-2D-8L) are heightened with Gotham in desperate need of three points. 'If you're in the bottom of the league, everything counts, every single shot, every single duel. If we don't get it right, we can actually end up even lower, and I think all the girls know that,' Berger said. 'And I think Utah actually have a really good team, and I think they're playing really nice soccer.' Forwards Midge Purce and Ella Stevens did not travel to Utah after getting subbed off due to injuries in the loss to Kansas City.

CIVIC Is Shaping the Future of Sports--One Fan Experience at a Time
With sports marketing spend to reach $115 billion in 2025 and women's leagues surging into the spotlight, CIVIC is reimagining how brands connect with fans—from stadium roars to race-day cheers NEW YORK, June 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- More than ever, Americans are showing up for sports—not just as viewers but as seekers of engaging experiences with other fans and professional teams. Seventy percent of Americans consider themselves sports fans, with more than one in five identifying as avid followers.1 At the center of this surge is CIVIC, a creative marketing and communications agency that's turning game days into deeper moments of fan connection with stories and experiences that feel personal, immersive, and shared. "We're seeing a real shift. Fans don't just want to watch; they want to engage, belong, connect—with sport and with each other," said Renee Austin, Head of Growth at CIVIC. "Sports create space for connection across backgrounds, beliefs, and generations. That's powerful and rare. We turn that connection into a community where fans feel seen, engaged, and part of something bigger. When brands invest in that kind of community, they build loyalty and lasting momentum." Fan interest is translating into action: Millennials and Gen Z are leading a growing wave of experience-driven sports engagement, and more than 1 million U.S. households have signed up for sports streaming services during key events.2 CIVIC is scaling to meet demand—tapping new, sports-savvy talent across strategy, creative, and production, as well as broadening its experiences, communications, and content offerings to include a sports-marketing lens. CIVIC was named PR Agency of Record for Major League Soccer as the league celebrates its 30th season and builds momentum toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup. CIVIC's PR team also supported Peacock's 2024 Olympic broadcast strategy, helping NBCUniversal generate buzz around key content drops and live storytelling throughout the Games. In addition, the team is continuing its multiyear engagement with New York Road Runners to elevate narratives of inclusive participation across the five boroughs. "Growing sports fandom today isn't just about filling seats—it's about earning a place in culture," said Julie Safer, Head of PR at CIVIC. "With attention harder to capture and loyalty harder to earn, fan experiences need to resonate beyond the game itself. Our job is to help sports brands create moments that travel—experiences that fans engage with, talk about, and carry into their daily lives." For ION, the broadcast partner for WNBA and NWSL, CIVIC created the "Fan ConnectION" experience at Grand Central Terminal, transforming a transit hub into an immersive pop-up where fans stepped into penalty shootouts and posed with WNBA star Sue Bird and NWSL star Megan Rapino, merging sports and entertainment into one unified, unexpected story. The activation drew more than 1,200 visitors, earned nearly 59 million media impressions, and kept guests onsite for more than 10 minutes on average, well above industry norms. CIVIC works directly with brand sponsors, media partners, and sports leagues to plan how they'll engage fans during tentpole events, including the NBA Finals, the U.S. Open, the French Open, the NWSL and AUSL Championships, the Olympics, and more. About CIVICCIVIC is an agency that drives brand growth through the power of community. We thrive on crafting experiences, content, and communications that create meaningful connections. We partner with some of the most recognizable brands, such as Ford, HBO, Verizon, NBCU, and Audible.
