
Five historic restaurants that fed the civil rights movement
From a Memphis fried chicken joint to a tamale counter in Jackson, these restaurants didn't just feed civil rights leaders – they funded, sheltered and fuelled the fight for equality.
The unassuming brick-and-siding facade of Lannie's BBQ Spot in Selma, Alabama, belies the rich history within. Named one of the nation's best restaurants by USA Today, this family-run eatery has long been more than a place for charred ribs and tangy sauce. As BBC Travel show host Reece Parkinson discovered on a recent trip to mark the 60th anniversary of the protest march from Selma to Montgomery, Lannie's also played a vital role in the civil rights movement.
"My mother and my grandmother fed a lot of people in the march," said Floyd Hatcher, who runs Lannie's today. His grandmother, Lannie Moore Travis, opened the restaurant in 1942 and made it one of Selma's first racially integrated dining spaces. During the 1965 Selma march for equal voting rights – which was met with extreme violence – Lannie's became a safe haven for protestors to gather.
"Barbecue brings people together," Hatcher added. "Don't care what race you are."
Today, restaurants like Lannie's are still bringing people together, serving up delicious dishes alongside a deeper understanding of the role these spaces played in the fight for justice. This year marks both the 60th anniversary of the Selma March and the 70th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, where African Americans refused to ride the city's public transportation in protest of segregated seating laws. These historical milestones shine a light on the movement's famous activists as well as on the small, Black-owned businesses that helped make the fight for equality possible.
"Food was always a crucial component of the civil rights movement," explained Bobby J Smith, associate professor of African American studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and author of the book Food Power Politics: The Food Story of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement. "Bringing food to the conversation really just expands the story that we already know. It also introduces new characters, new programmes [and] new actors. There [were many] unnamed women who were doing that kind of work."

According to Smith, Black-owned restaurants, and even home cooks, were in many ways the bedrock of the movement, putting lives and livelihoods on the line for justice. They provided more than meals; they offered safe spaces to meet and strategise, gave moral support, and in some cases, covered travel and bail costs that were out of reach for many of the working-class activists. Whether through fundraisers, bake sales or out-of-pocket donations, Black business owners throughout the US South used their success and community status to do the quiet work of funding a revolution.
The anniversaries of these momentous events come as the US wrestles with the implications of sweeping funding cuts to institutions that support African American history. "Whether it's in university spaces, in federal agencies [or] just in everyday lives, these kinds of stories are being erased or sidelined," Smith said. "But food can be that space to recover [them]."
Though many of the businesses from the movement have closed, there are several restaurants across the South that were once important hubs for strategy, solidarity and community. Here are five you can still visit:
Dooky Chase in New Orleans, Louisiana
A New Orleans institution known for its classic Creole cooking, Dooky Chase was a hotspot for civil rights organisers, lawyers and freedom fighters in the 1950s and still offers classic New Orleans dishes like seafood gumbo to politicians and celebrities today. Not only were civil rights icons like Thurgood Marshall, Ernest "Dutch" Morial and Oretha Castle Haley all frequent patrons, but chef Leah Chase, sometimes called the "Queen of Creole Cuisine", transformed its dining room into a gallery space for the city's African American artists.
Brenda's Bar-B-Q Pit in Montgomery, Alabama
Originally opened in 1942 as the Siesta Club, Brenda's Bar-B-Q Pit has been a staple in Montgomery ever since. Brenda's back room was used as a safe haven during the Montgomery bus boycott, where organisers could meet and create leaflets to hand out in support of the movement. It was also where owner Jereline Bethune taught reading and writing classes to help African Americans pass the discriminatory literacy tests required to vote in elections. Today, the tiny, brick take-out joint still serves up some of the best barbecue in the city, though visitors should be sure to bring cash.
The Four Way Grill in Memphis, Tennessee
Located in the historic neighbourhood of Soulsville, near the legendary Stax recording studio (now the Stax Museum of American Soul), The Four Way is a classic soul food restaurant with long ties to the African American community. It hosted many of the city's civil rights leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr, who frequently dined here before his assassination in 1968 at the Lorraine Motel in downtown Memphis, now the National Civil Rights museum. Visitors can order a classic "meat and three", a main meat dish with three sides, while perusing photos of the icons who dined here.
Paschal's Motor Hotel and Restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia
Once referred to as the unofficial headquarters of the civil rights movement for the number of activists that visited, Paschal's has prepared Southern dishes, like their famous fried chicken, since 1947, first at the original location on West Hunter Street and now in the Castleberry Hill Arts District, where it moved in 2002. The Paschal brothers, who owned the restaurant, were key figures in the movement, often posting bond for protestors and serving complimentary meals to families reuniting with loved ones who had been detained or arrested by police for their involvement in protests.
Big Apple Inn in Jackson, Mississippi
Known for its pig ear sandwiches and Mississippi hot tamales, the original Big Apple Inn was a fixture on Farish Street, which was the centre of Black life in Jackson in the 1950s and '60s. In 1954, the space above the small family-owned takeaway spot served as the offices for the activist Medgar Evers, the Mississippi field secretary for the NAACP (the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), a civil rights organisation dedicated to equality for African Americans. Evers was instrumental in leading the fight for desegregation of Mississippi schools, beaches and parks before his assassination in 1963.

I ate at world's biggest all you can eat buffet – it cost £10 with NO time limit… but here's what it's REALLY like
A FOODIE who filled up her plate at the world's biggest buffet for just £10 has spilled the beans on her tasty experience. Serving up giant steaks, extra thick milkshakes and Amish pie, the huge restaurant serves up enough grub for 10,000 people every single day. 9 9 9 9 Shady Maple Smorgasbord has transformed East Earl, Pennsylvania into an unlikely tourist hotspot in recent years. Hungry Americans and fascinated tourists regularly flock to the 100,000 sq ft buffet to try and take on the world's biggest buffet. In recent years it has even become famous on social media through food bloggers and popular influencers. One of these is New York-based influencer Amorray Marcano who visited Shady Maple back in April. She told The Sun: "I'm a content creator so I like to show cool things in the New York area and around it and I had no clue that the largest buffet in America was so close to me. "So I wanted to go just because of its reputation of being the largest and serving up to 10,000 people in a day." Amorray, 29, filmed her trip and posted it online to her 440,000 Instagram followers. She said one of her biggest concerns going into the buffet was the quality of the food. Most people usually head down to a buffet as a novelty dining experience where they can fill their plates high and try out as much food as their stomachs can handle. But the food is typically seen as below par due to it usually being left out under a heat lamp for some time before being eaten. Amorray said she was "pleasantly surprised" by the taste of the food on offer. She admitted: "There were hits and misses, but there were certain things that were actually really good. "The night I went they were serving catfish. And I don't really eat catfish normally, but thought I'll try it and it was so good. "It was cooked really well and just delicious. "There were some things that I didn't love. I would say some things might've been a little dry or some things maybe needed a little bit more seasoning. "But the things that were good were great, like their beef brisket, the steak and of course the cajun catfish." The whole buffet is open Monday to Saturday and welcomes in hungry guests from 7am all the way through to 7:30pm. 9 9 9 During the day, they serve up a breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings. The breakfast costs just $13.99 (£10) during the week and lunch will set you back $19.99 (£15). The price for dinner varies depending on exactly what type of food you want to treat yourself to but a standard price is $26.99 (£20). This encompasses grill items, 46 salad bar items, three soups, six homemade breads & rolls, four cheeses, eight different meats, 14 vegetables, ten cold desserts, three hot desserts, eight pies, six cakes, sundae bar and countless drinks. Special options are also available throughout the week including steak night, seafood night, wings night or even the grand menu. Amorray was amazed by the cheap price of the unlimited food. She continued: "I would see people sit down, they would eat, and then they would go back for more and you could stay for as long as you want. "So realistically, you could stay there for hours so it's a great bang for your buck. "For the night that I went, it was like $27 and the amount of food you get for that is easily worth way more than the price." One thing that did leave a sour taste in Amorray's mouth was just how busy the buffet was. Amorray and her friend queued up for 30 minutes outside at around dinner time due to the long line of excited guests. The influencer was mainly shocked by this due to its little known location. Not only is East Earl a tight knit community in Amish country but it also has a population of under 2,000 people. This means the town can sometimes be packed out with over five times the number of residents due to the popularity of the restaurant. "When I went in, I thought there's not going to be that much seating. But then once I walked in, there was loads in every, nook and cranny," Amorray added. "There must have been thousands of people in there and I was not expecting that just because we already had a 30 minute wait and there was a huge line behind us. "Honestly I was kind of overwhelmed when I went in because I was expecting the amount of food but not the amount of people." But after tucking into her first plate, Amorray said she fully understood why so many people flocked to the world famous Pennsylvania buffet. The Grove Hotel in Hertfordshire went viral earlier last year when TikTok foodies discovered its Glasshouse restaurant where everyone dines en masse, but in five-star luxury. Costing a whopping £82 per person at the weekend, there is certainly enough to choose from. After several, overly-generous spoonfuls of caviar, a few servings of beetroot-cured salmon and seven superbly crafted sushi rolls, decorated with dainty herbs, I felt I'd made a good dent in 'getting my money's worth' – a statement that had been thrown back and forth between my buffet partner, Mum, and I. I prowled the platters of sizzling Asian grub arranged temptingly in tandoor bowls and loaded into terracotta dishes, before heading straight for the crispy Thai fish cakes. The fish section was part of one of 10 dining areas at the buffet. This includes a carving station, AKA the place to pick up your classic roast dinner and trimmings with slices of rare roast beef, flakey wellington and crispy roast spuds all laid out with gravy. There was a sushi station with hand-made California rolls placed delicately alongside huge tubs of wasabi and seaweed salads. The robata grill is where everything from whole seabass to juicy steaks are scorched over an open flame and there's also fresh pasta and pizza stations. If all this isn't enough to wrap your head around, you can also order directly from the chefs, doting on each station, when there is something in particular that you fancy that isn't on display. So the real question is: would you pay that much cash for dinner? Much like the food on offer at the buffet, Shady Maple provided almost every kind of soft drink imaginable. The star of the drinks show was a huge soda fountain to the side of the room. This had all kinds of soda in it from cream soda, vanilla coke and even root beer as well as all the regular options. A coffee machine, hot chocolate station and milkshake stand meant everyone's taste was catered for. Alcohol was the only notable exception on the menu. And no tipping is expected at the restaurant. I built a tiny home on wheels for £1.5k, at 13 years old, it has a kitchen, bed & enough space to host family dinners
LUKE Thill, now 20, is on a mission to build incredible homes. When he was 12 years old, he took on his first challenge: building a tiny home on wheels. 6 6 In a video watched by 13 million people on his YouTube channel @LukeThill, he takes viewers around the finished build. Inspired by other DIY renovations on YouTube, Luke set about saving up. Over several months, Luke, from Iowa, raised £1,100 ($1,500) to pay for the materials needed for the build. Luke's local community chipped in by donating materials, and he swapped services for help with building. His dad helped him draw up plans and construct the house, while his mum assisted with the interior design. The tiny home is connected to electricity, and inside, Luke has fit a working stove, mini-fridge, a sofa with a drop-down table, and a loft bed. He even built a deck at the front using reclaimed materials. In total, the tiny home took the teenager a year and a half to complete. Luke, now a paramedic, said: 'The tiny house was always meant to be a space to have friends over and to entertain people.' And that's exactly what he did one Thanksgiving when he hosted his family in the space. We bought 2 shipping containers for $5,500 each and built our 'dream' tiny home - a key method helped us save even more Luke said: 'We had everything a normal Thanksgiving dinner would have. My family of five plus our dog all fit." Luke's build was such a success that at 14 years old, his twin brother, Cole asked him to build a 36-square-foot mini camper to go along with the tiny house. The camper is less than half the size of the tiny house and portable, so it was built in a different way to withstand high speeds in transportation. Since building it, the camper has been on more than 50 trips across the country, mainly used in the summer when the weather is fine. Inside, there is an L shape banquette seating which doubles into a sleeping area and a small table. 6 6 6 But the main attraction is outside as the camper has a huge pull-out drawer which houses all their camping cooking equipment, and then doubles into a worktop to prep food. 'It houses everything you need to cook - we even have a gas propane stove," Luke explained in another video. "It's obviously not a full kitchen but it has everything you need in this sliding drawer under the camper.
