Australia beats second-string Japan to reach brink of 2026 World Cup qualification
PERTH, Australia (AP) — A last-minute goal from Aziz Behich gave Australia a 1-0 win over Japan in Perth on Thursday and put the Socceroos within touching distance of the 2026 World Cup.
With just the top two from Asia Group C certain of a place in the tournament, Australia was six points clear of third and will qualify for a sixth successive World Cup later Thursday if Saudi Arabia, next week's final group opponent, fails to win in Bahrain.
The already-qualified Japan fielded an experimental XI with only Daichi Kamada and Koki Machida having made more than four international appearances, but still had the majority of possession and chances.
Substitute Takefusa Kubo had perhaps the best opportunity with 10 minutes remaining, but the midfielder shot wide of the post from inside the area.
In the 90th minute, Riley McGree broke free down the right and pulled back for Behich to curl home to bring Perth Stadium to its feet and give Australia a first win over Japan in 16 years.
'It hasn't sunk in just yet but when the final whistle went it was a great feeling,' Behich said. 'It was a tough game and we had to grind it out. It's been a long campaign and we have worked so hard.'
The teams who finish third and fourth in the three groups in this third round of Asian qualifying will advance to a fourth stage to compete for the remaining two Asian places at the World Cup.

Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle expected to miss 8-12 weeks with hamstring strain
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle is expected to be out eight to 12 weeks with a right hamstring strain that has already landed him on the injured list. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said Friday that an MRI revealed a Grade 2 strain. Mountcastle was injured May 30 in a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox. 'It's incredibly disappointing,' Mansolino said. 'I feel for him, the group feels for him, but we've got to move forward. We've got some good players here that will step up and pick up the slack.' The Orioles got the news on Mountcastle before they had a season-best, six-game winning streak stopped in a 5-4 loss to the Athletics on Friday night. Mountcastle is hitting .246 with 13 doubles, two homers, 15 RBIs and a .628 OPS through 52 games. He was hitting .298 in May with seven hits in his previous 12 at-bats before the injury. Ryan O'Hearn and top prospect Coby Mayo will split time at first base. The 23-year-old Mayo appeared in his ninth game of the season on Friday after playing in 17 games while making his big league debut a year ago. NEW YORK (AP) — Jazz Chisholm Jr. has The Seventy Percent Solution. While most athletes talk about the urge to give 100% or even 110%, the New York Yankees infielder thinks his success since returning from the injured list has been caused by limiting intensity. 'Just go at 70%. That's what's been working for me,' he said Friday night after his three-run, go-ahead homer in the first inning and four RBIs sparked the Yankees over the Boston Red Sox 9-6 in the opening meeting this year of the AL East rivals. 'Play at 70%: defense, offense, running, everything. Stay healthy. You don't overswing. You don't swing and miss as much, and you're a great player at 70%.' Chisholm is hitting .500 (8 for 16) with two homers, six RBIs and three steals in four games since returning Tuesday from a strained right oblique, an April 29 injury that caused him to miss 28 games. 'He's squaring balls up. He's got so much talent and power, and he doesn't have to go reach for it,' manager Aaron Boone said. 'That kind of wiry thing he's got inside him, he doesn't have to work too hard to generate it. So nice and easy is always good for Jazz.' Chisholm raised his season average this week from .181 to .223. 'He's a game-changer,' Yankees captain Aaron Judge said. 'When you step out there in Yankee Stadium, the adrenaline is going to be flowing. It's really just about slowing everything down and just take a nice, easy approach.' I think that's where I should stay at.' He also mentioned a NASCAR analogy. 'It's super challenging for me because only thing I knew was like how to go fast,' Chisholm said. 'Basically I was Ricky Bobby growing up.' Chisholm had three hits, including an RBI single in the second, and stole two bases in three tries — the third was originally called safe but overturned in a video review. Anthony Volpe hit a two-run homer in the first off Walker Buehler, boosting the lead to 7-0. 'In his mind it might be 70%, but I think what everyone in the clubhouse loves and respects about him is that it looks like every night he's playing with his hair on fire and over 100%,' Volpe said. Following Oswaldo Cabrera's broken left ankle and the return of DJ LeMahieu from a calf strain, the Yankees moved Chisholm back to third base from second.
