
B.C. grocers move toward buying local as tariff threat looms

At Ellis Street Market in Kelowna, Canadian-made products are clearly labelled with maple leaf stickers.
Amid looming tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump, several grocery stores in B.C. are making it easier for shoppers to identify and purchase local products.
And they say demand for buying locally has increased since Trump ordered a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian goods, which was initially set to come into effect just after midnight on Tuesday.
But despite the 30-day pause on the tariffs announced Monday, grocers are still gearing up to move away from U.S. products.
Ellis Street Market manager Chris Hansen says while it is not possible to fully move away from some U.S. products, they can highlight local items so shoppers can make informed decisions.
"That means to galvanize all our farmers together and have them showcased in an upfront, prominent way," Hansen said on CBC's Daybreak South.
He said many customers have expressed interest in buying local recently, and their shop has also called local business owners into the shop to provide demonstrations and showcase their products.
"This is an opportunity for us to diversify, to get localized, to be part of our communities," said Hansen.
"And realize how important it really is that we take care of ourselves first."

Tyler Large, operations director for Country Grocer based on Vancouver Island, has also noticed demand increasing for local products in the last week.
He says customers are shying away from products made in the U.S. while there has been an uptick in local products, such as B.C. cucumbers.
"The customers are the ones that are going to tell us what they want and they're still very clear on buying Canada, buying local, buying B.C.," Large said on CBC's On The Island Tuesday morning.
For grocery stores, Large predicts that produce will be most affected by the tariffs.
And he said this may be the push local retailers need to diversify their supply chains and look elsewhere for produce, like Latin America and Oceania.
"This is definitely a wake-up call for our industry," said Large. "I think it's going to have some really positive outcomes."
Buy local campaign—on a local scale
In Vancouver, Coun. Pete Fry is urging the city to bring forward a "Buy Local" strategy. It comes as several provinces, including B.C., work to explore trade alternatives.
The motion, which he intends to bring forward as urgent new business on Tuesday, asks for a review of city procurement policies to prioritize local suppliers and to launch a Buy Local campaign in collaboration with businesses.
"Team Canada doesn't start and end with the Prime Minister and the Premiers — it also includes your local elected representatives, local businesses, and you," Fry said Tuesday in a statement.
While the pause is a great relief for many Canadians, the buy-local movement will likely continue now that the trade relationship has been threatened, according to David Soberman, a marketing professor at the University of Toronto.
He says buying locally not only supports Canadian companies facing lost business from the States, but it will also insulate Canadian consumers if Canada enforces retaliatory tariffs on American products.

Modi accepts Carney's invite to mend fences and attend G7 conference
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Friday he will attend the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alta., later this month after accepting an invitation from Prime Minister Mark Carney. The invitation prompted anger from the World Sikh Organization of Canada which wrote to Carney in May asking him not to invite Modi as tensions remain high between Canada and India over accusations about Indian government agents being involved in the murder of a Canadian activists for Sikh separatism in British Columbia in 2023. Carney extended the invitation to Modi in a phone call between the two leaders on Friday morning. The summit runs from June 15 to 17. "As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the summit," Modi said in a social media statement. In a Canadian readout of the call Carney said he and Modi agreed to continue a discussion on law enforcement to address "security concerns." Tensions between Canada and India have been high since former prime minister Justin Trudeau first informed the House of Commons in September 2023 that Canada was looking at "credible allegations" that agents of the Indian government were involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was shot outside a gurdwara in Surrey, B.C., in June 2023. At the time of his death, Nijjar was organizing a non-binding referendum in Canada on establishing a Sikh state in Punjab, to be called Khalistan. The Indian government rejected Trudeau's accusation and said Canada was supporting "Khalistani terrorists." In May 2024, Four Indian nationals were arrested and charged in connection with Nijjar's death. In October 2024, the RCMP said it had evidence linking agents of India's government to homicides and other criminal acts in Canada, including coercion and extortion. In response, the federal government announced it had expelled six Indian diplomats and consular officials "in relation to a targeted campaign against Canadian citizens by agents linked to the Government of India." In a media statement, Global Affairs Canada said that it had asked India to waive diplomatic and consular immunities "and to co-operate in the investigation," but India declined. India responded in kind by expelling six diplomats, including Canada's high commissioner. Later that month, the U.S. Justice Department announced criminal charges against an Indian government employee in connection with an alleged foiled murder-for-hire plot targeting a Sikh separatist leader in New York City. Balpreet Singh, legal counsel and spokesman for the World Sikh Organization of Canada said Carney's invitation to Modi is a "betrayal of Canadian values." "It is the betrayal of our community. And the timing could not be worse. Today is the day we commemorate the 41st anniversary of the Indian government's storming of our holiest shrine, Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar," Singh said. "And the summit to which Mr. Modi is being invited falls on the anniversary of the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar two years ago. So for us, this is unacceptable, it's shocking and it's a complete reversal of the principled stand that Prime Minister Trudeau had taken." Singh said that the World Sikh Organization wrote Carney a letter on May 21 asking that Modi not be invited to the G7. While India is not a G7 member, the country has been invited to the summit by the host nation every year since 2019. "We didn't want to make this into a public issue but there was no response. There was no acknowledgment of receipt. But this is, it really boggles the mind," Singh said. "How can a country that has engaged in criminal operations in Canada, which is engaged in multiple murders, extortions, receive a red-carpet welcome?" During the final days of the federal election campaign, former NDP leader Jagmeet Singh said that in December 2023 he was put under heavy police protection due to a credible threat to his life. He said the RCMP did not identify a specific source for the threat but the implication was that it originated with a foreign government. Singh said the World Sikh Organization doesn't plan on sending further correspondence to the prime minister about Modi's invitation. "What's the point? I mean, we sent something out on May 21 and received no response," he said. "And clearly, our voices don't matter to him." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum are among the other non-member world leaders invited to the summit. As of May 28, Sheinbaum had not said whether she would attend.

‘The 401 is a nightmare:' Doug Ford doubles down on tunnel vision
Premier Doug Ford is doubling down on his vision to build a tunnel underneath Highway 401, telling reporters that 'just because it hasn't been done, doesn't mean it can't be done.' Ford made the comment during an unrelated news conference on Friday when asked to make his pitch on why the tunnel should be included on a list of new 'nation-building' projects that Prime Minister Mark Carney hopes to fast track with legislation tabled in the House of Commons earlier in the day. 'The 401 is a nightmare, I don't even have to sell this. You can't even get around this city and then outside the city when you start going west and you start going east it is jammed everywhere,' the premier said. 'It is jammed because the visionaries who built the highway should have thought of this 40 or 50 years ago but we are visionaries and we are going to get it done. We are going to build that tunnel as sure as I am talking to you today.' Ontario has already begun the process of seeking interested parties to help carry out a feasibility study on a potential Highway 401 tunnel, with the deadline for the initial requests for proposals passing just last week. However, some experts have questioned how realistic the project is, given that it would likely cost billions of dollars and take decades to build. Carney's legislation, tabled Friday, includes several specific criteria for 'nation-building' projects, including that they strengthen 'Canada's autonomy, resilience and security,' provide 'economic or other benefits to Canada, have a 'high likelihood of successful execution,' advance 'the interests of Indigenous peoples' and contribute to 'clean growth and to Canada's objectives with respect to climate change.' Ford was asked whether the Highway 401 tunnel fit that ball on Friday and argued that it does due to the billions of dollars in lost productivity associated with Toronto's crippling traffic. 'You can't just think of next year. You have to be thinking of a generation or two generations, down the road,' he said. 'I go back to the 1950's when the Bloor Viaduct was being built and one of the people in the works department here said 'Let's put a rail on there' and that was before the subways and everyone criticized him. Well thank God they put the rail on there. This is the exact same thing.' Ford previously sent a letter to Carney in March outlining several projects that he would like to see funded. The Highway 401 tunnel was one of five projects on that list. The other projects include the development of Ontario's mineral-rich Ring of Fire region, nuclear energy generation, a new James Bay deep-sea port and an expansion of GO Transit infrastructure in the Golden Horseshoe known as 'GO 2.0.' Ford first floated the idea of building a tunnel underneath Highway 401 to divert traffic in September. He has suggested the tunnel could span from east of Highway 410 in Mississauga to east of Scarborough.

‘Absolutely ludicrous': Selkirk mayor sounds off on Trump doubling steel, aluminum tariffs
Mayor Larry Johannson weighs in on Trump's tariff hike and what it means for Selkirk's steel industry and local economy. The mayor of Selkirk believes newly beefed-up U.S. tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports will stop the city's mill from trading with the southerly neighbour altogether. 'At 50 per cent, it's just too expensive. It's just too much,' Selkirk Mayor Larry Johannson said Friday in an interview with CTV Morning Live Winnipeg. On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the U.S. will double tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from all countries, including Canada, hiking the imposed tax from 25 to 50 per cent. Trump claims the increased tariffs are aimed at stopping foreign countries from offloading low-priced, excess steel and aluminum into the U.S. market. The changes came into effect Wednesday. Gerdau Ameristeel Manitoba is one of Selkirk's largest employers, with roughly 550 residents working at the mill. According to Johannson, the company could still sell to the United States under the previous 25 per cent tariff. 'At 25 per cent, we were still seeing a lot of semi-trailers loaded with steel coming out of our plants, heading to other projects, into the U.S. and across Canada, but 50 per cent is absolutely ludicrous.' The move has forced the industry to seek out business across Canada, he said, bolstered by memorandums of understanding inked by Manitoba and other provinces to ease the flow of goods within the country. '(Tariffs) are kind of forcing us to absolutely do that. These interprovincial trade barriers, they look like they are starting to connect, and they're going to be coming down, which is a good thing,' he said. 'We're looking at a lot of other projects.' He also believes Americans are making their disapproval of the trade war known to their elected officials. The Selkirk mayor has spent time in the States as part of his mayoral duties and has heard firsthand how unpopular tariffs have become. Overall, Johansson said he remains optimistic as a lot of negotiations are happening behind the scenes. 'There's no room for failure here. We're not shutting down. We're not going to slow down.
