Gold Cup one-two share top jumps billing
Galopin Des Champs had achieved a mark of 179 in the previous two seasons, but after the Gavin Cromwell-trained Inothewayurthinkin foiled his Gold Cup hat-trick, the pair are equally rated – the first horses to split the title since the 1999-2000 season when Looks Like Trouble and See More Business were both on 174.
The ratings are agreed and compiled by a group of British and and Irish handicappers, with each of the six groups across fences and hurdles headed by Irish-trained runners.
Shay Quinn, senior National Hunt handicapper at the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB), said: 'Galopin Des Champs was the highest rated horse in training for the third consecutive year, although this year he shared the honour with the impressive Gold Cup winner Inothewayurthinkin.
'Fact to File (173) was the clear winner of the middle-distance division thanks to a scintillating display in the Ryanair, while Marine Nationale (170) cemented his position as the top two-mile chaser around following wins in both the Cheltenham and Punchestown Champion Chases.
'The novice section was headed by Majborough (164), who was champion in the two-mile section courtesy of a devastating performance at Punchestown. He's an exciting novice and if he continues to jump like that, has all the attributes required to go to the very top in open company.'
Jonbon was the leading British-trained runner, although his perch of 168 is 2lb lower than last year, while his fellow Nicky Henderson inmate Sir Gino achieved a mark of 163 in his sole chase start before injury ended his campaign.
State Man, who dramatically fell at the final flight with the Champion Hurdle at his mercy, heads the hurdles rankings on 167, with Constitution Hill retaining his place as the leading British performer on 162, despite coming unstuck at Cheltenham, Aintree and Punchestown in the spring.
Michael Harris, the British Horseracing Authority's handicapping team leader (Hurdles), said: 'The two-mile hurdle division was one of changing fortunes throughout the season and ultimately it was State Man who takes top honours for the second year in succession.
'Constitution Hill was unable to show his best form towards the end of the season, but his success in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton still rated the best performance from a British hurdler at 162.
'In a strong looking novice crop, it is the unbeaten The New Lion who ranks highest on a figure of 159. His defeat of Final Demand (158) and The Yellow Clay (156) at Cheltenham looks a strong piece of form and hopes will be high that he can take the step up to open Grade One company next season in his stride.'

A schoolboy was left feeling "like an inconvenience" when airline staff wouldn't let him take his wheelchair onto a flight with him, his mother has claimed. Daire Gorman was on his way to see Scotland captain Andy Robertson and former Celtic star Virgil van Dijk lift the Premier League title at Anfield. But the 13-year-old - who has no arms and no femur bones in his legs - was not allowed to take his power wheelchair with him on the flight to Liverpool. And his mum has hit out at the treatment of Daire, who was born with a rare condition called Crommelin syndrome, which impacts the development of limbs. Last year he met the entire squad and then-manager Jurgen Klopp at the AXA Training Centre, reports BelfastLive. But his trip from Dublin to Liverpool was not as successful. Liverpool Echo reports that, just a few days before the trip, Daire's mother, Shelley, was asked by Ryanair whether the power wheelchair was able to be folded. They then informed her that the wheelchair exceeded the airline's maximum dimensions, which she told The Irish Times in an interview. After being asked whether the wheelchair could be folded, Shelley "replied saying it was a power wheelchair and couldn't fold down." When informed that the chair would be too big, Shelley rang special assistance customer service. She said: "I ended up ringing special assistance customer services and they asked could he not go without the chair, and refused to take his chair." "As a parent, you try and do your best for your children and especially children with additional needs and protect them from negativity – my child needs his wheelchair, imagine asking can he not go without it." She claims that Ryanair initially refused to offer a refund before relenting. In response to Shelley's complaints, Ryanair issued a statement to The Irish Times and rejected the claim it didn't offer a refund. In the statement, the airline said "regrettably, these emotive claims made by his mother are false. She fails anywhere in her complaint to accept that this wheelchair exceeded our well-publicised max dimensions." The power wheelchair wasn't needed in the end, as the family was able to source a manual wheelchair which was used on the day. Shelley said this caused more problems. She said Daire needed to use an "aisle chair" to transfer onto the plane seat. She also claims that Daire entered the plane last, when the aircraft was full, resulting in him being pushed the entire length of the plane, "knocking off people" and "losing his dignity". She added that "everyone" was "watching him transfer on to the seat". She said that the airline"completely took Daire's independence away and made him feel like an inconvenience". A Ryanair spokesperson said the max dimensions information was "readily available to Ms Gorman when this booking was made and if she had simply complied with them then that would have been the end of the matter". The airline also denies asking Daire's mum whether he could travel without a wheelchair and confirms that they did offer a refund. Furthermore, the spokesperson explained that wheelchair boardings are handled by the Dublin Airport. Authority and not by individual airlines. The statement states that Shelley's "claim that ' Ryanair completely took Daire's independence away' is false and absurd". Ryanair did not respond to The Irish Times' follow-up queries relating to Daire's positioning at the back of the plane. On Friday, Shelley appeared on Northern Sound radio to speak more on the issue: "He was devastated. It's hard enough for someone in a wheelchair, especially a child with additional needs. They find it hard sometimes to fit in. "So yeah, he was very upset. And he thought then 'oh this is my fault. If I wasn't in a chair this wouldn't be happening. So he was very upset." Ryanair has been contacted by our sister the Irish Mirror for further comment on the matter.

Oscar Piastri wins Spanish Grand Prix as Lando Norris slips back in title fight
Norris started second and finished in the same position – despite losing out to Red Bull's Max Verstappen off the line – taking the chequered flag 2.4 seconds behind Piastri. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc completed the podium after he fought his way past Verstappen following a late safety car re-start. However, Verstappen accused Leclerc of driving into him as the two made slight contact on the straight and then fell off the road as he attempted to defend from George Russell. Verstappen was advised to give the position to Russell to avoid a penalty, and while he seemed set to let Russell through, he appeared to drive into the Mercedes. In came Norris on lap 21 for a change of tyres with Piastri in on the following lap. That promoted Verstappen into the lead before the four-time world champion pulled in for his second change of tyres on lap 29. Hamilton's sub-par race then suffered another setback in the pits when he lost time with a sticky front-right tyre. Piastri looked on course to cruise to victory only for Kimi Antonell's engine to expire on lap 55 of 66, and, with the Italian rookie stranded in the gravel at Turn 10, out came the safety car. A six-lap shootout followed but, despite the chaos behind, it was Piastri who held his nerve to keep Norris at bay and land another dent to the Briton's title tilt. Piastri said: 'It was a great weekend overall. The pace was good and we could turn it on when we needed to. 'Good to bounce back from Monaco. It has been a great year and this weekend has been the one I have been after. The team gave me a great car and winning races is a lot of fun.' Norris said: 'Oscar drove a very good race. I didn't have the pace to match him but I gave it my best shot.' Leclerc added: 'Max wanted to bring me to the inside, so I was pushing him to the left. There was a bit of contact but for me no damage so there were no consequences.'

USMNT adds Walker Zimmerman, Paxten Aaronson, Nathan Harriel to Gold Cup training camp
The US mens national team is making some changes to its pre-Gold Cup training camp roster, adding Walker Zimmerman, Paxten Aaronson, and Nathan Harriel to the squad that is set to play friendlies v Turkiye and Switzerland in the coming international break. All of the adds are injury replacements. They arrive in place of defender DeJuan Jones (who has what US Soccer called a lower body injury), midfielder Sean Zawadzki (knee injury) and striker Folarin Balogun (ankle injury). All of the replacements appeared for the US at the 2024 Olympics, in which the team made a run to the quarter-finals. Zimmerman is no stranger to the full USMNT, having made the roster for the 2022 World Cup and earning praise for his late-game defensive heroics v Iran in the final game of the group stage. Zimmerman, 32, has had a solid season anchoring the Nashville SC backline in 2025.
