Community steps up to help after Gardner apartment condemned

GARDNER, Kan. — While residents at Aspen Place are scrambling after their complex was condemned on Tuesday, their community was also scrambling to get them some help.
The complex was shut down due to safety concerns on Tuesday morning, leaving residents a mere 48 hours to vacate their homes.
Downtown Kansas City business owners issuing a warning: 'This isn't a political issue—it's a safety issue'
'I can't imagine that,' said Melissa Prins. 'It's completely heartbreaking to think of all those families and they have all walks of life there. They have single parents; they have elderly families. It's just flabbergasting.'
Prins is the director of the Hope Market, a food pantry in Gardner. She's leading the charge on helping residents, and getting resources together from other nonprofits and churches.
'We're going to try and get all of our eggs in one basket to see how we can best help everyone,' she said. Folks are eager to help. 'We've had people walking in off the street going, 'Hey, I heard that this is a need. How can we help?'' said Joey Lang, lead pastor of Grace Baptist Church. 'It makes you proud to be part of Gardner.'
Community leaders along with city officials and law enforcement gathered at Grace Baptist Church, collaborating on what everyone could bring to the table.
'Whether that's moving boxes, whether that's help moving, where there's help getting here, we want to make sure that there is a just a steady flood of resources available to help these people land where they need to land,' Lang said.
The parking lot was packed at the church before the 6:30 meeting on Tuesday. More than 100 people came to see how they could help their neighbors and come up with a game plan to present to residents on Wednesday evening.
During the meeting, two organizations pledged $30,000 each to help put residents up at hotels for the next several days.
Prins and Lang both say the generosity is just part of living in Gardner.
'That's the best thing about Gardner; is everybody just comes together here to help everyone,' Prins said. 'So, I know we can do something great for them.'
Lang said that the community won't let them go through this by themselves.
'If you can find a highlight here in the tragedy, it is the love these people are going to feel from their community that's going to come together and just acknowledge them, see them, and not let them walk this road alone,' Lang said.
While some in the meeting offered hotel rooms, vans, moving boxes and more, Nick Blessing with the Kansas Legal Service was offering legal help.
'This shouldn't have gotten to this point, and I think accountability is necessary here. All of them are being are being removed from this property,' Blessing said. 'And that's and I think there are claims that arise out of just that.'

The Kansas Legal Service provides legal services free of charge to low-income clients.
'From what I understand, the water system there has not been compliant with code for a long time,' Blessing told FOX4. 'Anybody who started renting their wall, it was in this condition. Aspen Place failed to deliver possession of that rental units in compliance with the law, which means that arguably all or a portion of the rent that those tenants have paid while living there, while it's in that condition, they have a claim for that to be paid back.'
Those looking to help residents at Aspen Place should reach out to Melissa at the Hope Market, or can donate through Hope Market here.

Download CrossOver for macOS and Linux

The main attraction of CrossOver goes beyond its capability to execute Windows applications, according to users. The application operates in such a way that users feel like they never disconnected from their Mac or Linux environments. You're not creating virtual machines. There's no need for a computer reboot when you require a specific app through this software. The software enables you to maintain your position on your macOS or Linux desktop while gaining access to programs that were previously unavailable to you. Few professionals working across diverse environments will find this significant benefit particularly helpful. Your primary computer operates with Mac, but you require an accounting software that functions exclusively on Windows. If you switched to Linux, then your preferred design application does not provide support for your new operating system. The design of CrossOver allows users to avoid making sacrifices with their software choices. You can experience dual functionality since CrossOver operates between macOS and Linux desktops through a single interface. The several years of development have made the platform solid, so it remains resistant to breakage. About 75% of standard applications Americans wish to operate on have undergone testing, and developers have simplified the installation process with basic click commands. Simplicity stands out as the key distinguishing fact of this particular product. For decades, Wine demonstrated complete power while maintaining requirements that demand technical abilities. The sophisticated, complex functions of the program remain hidden behind an elegant user interface provided by CrossOver. The system functions best without needing to understand how everything operates within the program code. The application selection process is simple since you just need to choose the desired app to install, then watch CrossOver execute all operations automatically. Softness in user experience activates two significant benefits: first, it reduces the amount of time required to complete actions, and secondly, it conserves precious energy for other tasks. The process requires no debugging activities or searches on online forums. Moving forward with your work process just requires you to launch your selected software. Managers who work with productivity tools combined with older software or games without native system compatibility will experience a total shift in their work process because of this access method. The software removes the ongoing platform battle between different operating systems. It reduces friction. Open-source foundations enable this platform, while the provider delivers support through regular updates along with technical assistance that users need. The stable, practical functionality of CrossOver provides an excellent program solution for developers and gamers and business owners, and strictly functional users who require particular software without damaging their system operations.

Yarbrough's revenge: How a World Series ring inspired his win for the Yankees over the Dodgers

LOS ANGELES — Ryan Yarbrough picked up a dazzling World Series ring from his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. Then he went out and beat them. The New York Yankees starter pitched one-run ball over six innings, struck out a season-high five and blanked the Dodgers' top four hitters in a 7-3 win Sunday night. 'I feel like I'm in a really good place right now and really trying to continue that,' Yarbrough said. 'I'm having a lot of fun.' The 33-year-old left-hander made 44 relief appearances between the Dodgers and Blue Jays last season. The Dodgers designated him for assignment on July 29 and the next day traded him to Toronto. So even though he wasn't around for their World Series victory over the Yankees last fall, Yarbrough earned a ring. He accepted it from Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes on Friday behind home plate during batting practice. 'Trying to keep that a little discreet, especially with where we're at now, but kind of cool to be able to get that,' Yarbrough said. He signed a $2 million, one-year deal with New York in March and is 3-0 with a 2.83 ERA this season. Making his first career start against the Dodgers, Yarbrough recorded 17 swings-and-misses — including seven with his sweeper. The top four hitters in Los Angeles' lineup had produced at least one hit in every game this season. That is, until Shohei Ohtani, Teoscar Hernández, Freddie Freeman and Will Smith combined to go 0 for 14 in the series finale against Yarbrough and the Yankees. New York manager Aaron Boone has called Yarbrough a throwback, noting his 6-foot-5 frame creates a 'funky' angle for hitters. 'He's got a lot of ways to get you out. Just when you think he's slowing you down, slowing you down, he's able to speed you up enough,' Boone said. 'It feels like it's hard to get a bead on him.' It certainly was for Ohtani. He struck out on five pitches ranging from 70-86 mph in the first inning, when Yarbrough retired the side in order. Later, he set down 13 of 15 batters before exiting. 'He's not going to light up the radar gun, but all his pitches feel like they get on you,' teammate DJ LeMahieu said. 'His fastballs look like they get on you and his off-speed looks extra slow. He's got good stuff and he knows what he's doing out there.' Yarbrough conceded his familiarity with his ex-teammates helped, too. 'It was just a matter of execution and keeping them off balance and not putting them in counts where they can really hunt for certain pitches,' he said. It was also a big night for LeMahieu, who had his first four-hit game since 2021. He drove in two runs and raised his batting average to .239. The second baseman had three singles and a double on a night when Aaron Judge was the only Yankees player without a hit. 'I feel good. Good to get some results,' LeMahieu said. ___ AP MLB:
