Parag, Samson, Jaiswal have played enough cricket...': RR coach pulls no punches after another crushing final over loss
Rajasthan Royals batting coach Vikram Rathour was a picture of disappointment following the team's narrow defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in IPL 2025. Already eliminated from the race for playoffs, RR came close to spoiling KKR's campaign on Sunday, needing only three runs to win from the last ball after strong hitting from Shubham Dubey in the final over; however, Rinku Singh inflicted a run out on the last ball, securing a 1-run win for the Knight Riders.
This is not the first time when RR have found themselves repeatedly in winning positions only to falter at crucial moments.
'If I'm counting right, it's the fourth game which we got into position where we should have won it, but we were unable to finish off. That's the kind of season we've got so far,' Rathour said, acknowledging the team's struggle to close out games.
Despite individual players putting up good performances, Rathour was quick to dismiss the notion that inexperience had played a role in the team's struggles.
'I won't say that, I mean Riyan (Parag), Dhruv (Jurel), Nitish (Rana), Sanju (Samson), (Yashasvi) Jaiswal, they've played enough cricket now to call them inexperienced.'
Instead, Rathour pointed to injuries as a major factor impacting RR's performance. 'What I would say is that injuries haven't helped. You know, we're missing, Sanju, we are definitely missing Sandeep (Sharma) in the team,' he added.
The batting coach's frustrations were evident as he reflected on the team's inability to perform as a unit. "Mostly all the batters have scored runs. So they are in good form or are batting well in the net, but it hasn't been happening collectively. And similarly in bowling, I think we've seen some really good spells individually, but as a group, maybe we haven't collectively performed," Rathour said.
Fielding, too, has been an area of concern for RR. "And maybe the fielding hasn't helped a great deal. So yeah, it's a lot of things that didn't go our way actually this season, a lot of areas to focus on and get better at," he said.
Rathour remains confident that motivation will not be an issue for his players in the final games of the season. "When you're playing, I think, the best league in the world, that should be motivation enough. Every game is an opportunity to show your skills, how good you are, and you're competing against these world-class bowlers. So I think everybody's motivation should never be an issue, and you're playing in IPL, whether you qualified or not," he stated.

Nicholas Pooran, former West Indies T20I captain, announces shock retirement from international cricket at 29
Nicholas Pooran, a former West Indies T20I captain, stunned the cricket fraternity on Tuesday as he announced his shock retirement from international cricket at the age of 29. The left-handed batter, who was recently seen in action for the Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, posted a statement on Instagram confirming his decision. Describing the decision as "difficult", Pooran said that getting the chance to lead the team was a "privilege" for him. Pooran ended his international career after playing 61 T20Is and 106 ODIs and scoring more than 4000 runs across the two formats. It must be mentioned that the batter's call to step away from international cricket comes days after he requested Cricket West Indies (CWI) not to consider him for the white-ball series against England because he wanted some rest. 'After much thought and reflection, I've decided to announce my retirement from international cricket," Pooran wrote on Instagram. A post shared by Nicholas Pooran (@nicholaspooran) Pooran's retirement is a shocker because there are just eight months remaining for the T20 World Cup, which is set to be played in India and Sri Lanka.

Karun Nair poised for No. 4 duty, KL Rahul biggest positive; Reddy vs Thakur...: How India potentials performed vs Lions
India A's tour games against England Lions, comprising two four-day matches, concluded on Monday. Both fixtures—played in Canterbury and Northampton—ended in draws. But more than the results, the matches held significance for the 19 Indian players involved. For 12 of them, it was a chance to prove their mettle in foreign conditions and make a case to the BCCI selection committee. For the remaining seven, it served as valuable preparation for the upcoming five-match Test series in England, starting June 20. Although the India A team will remain in England for one final tour match—an intra-squad game against the Shubman Gill-led side in Beckenham starting next Monday (June 16)—seven players from the squad have now joined the senior team. These include Karun Nair, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Nitish Reddy, Dhruv Jurel, and Shardul Thakur. Ahead of the final preparatory game, here's a look at how these players have geared up for the England Test series. Karun Nair poised for No. 4 role: The veteran batter is not only set to make a return to the Indian Test XI for the firs time in eight years, but is poised for the vacant No. 4 role, which had belonged to Virat Kohli until his retirement last month. Earning a call up after his record-breaking Ranji Trophy show last season, Nair vindicated Ajit Agarkar's move with a double century in the first game, where he batted at No. 3, followed by scores of 40 and 15 at No. 4 in the second match. KL Rahul a big positive: The India star, who had a breakout campaign in Australia as an opener, was not initially part of the India A squad, until he reportedly made a request to the selectors to get him in after his IPL campaign ended early. Rahul utilised the chance to quickly get into the groove with a century in the first innings for the second match, followed by a fifty. However, Jaiswal, who is all set for his first Test appearance in England, showed signs of vulnerability against the moving ball. He managed 107 runs in four innings, with one score of fifty. Easwaran, on the other hand, the India A captain and the back-up opener for India, had a decent outing with a fifty each in both games, as he amassed 167 runs. Thakur vs Reddy: Unfortunately, neither made a compelling case to make the playing XI. Reddy was the frontrunner in the battle of the all-rounders, after his performance in Australia, but despite the English conditions being more suitable to his pace-bowling variety, he struggled to get breakthroughs, managing just two wickets in two matches, while scoring 135 runs in four innings, including a fifty. Thakur, on the other hand, who had lost the race to make the Indian team for the Australia tour to the Andhra star last October, needed runs to make his case, but managed just 80 runs in three innings. More worryingly, his bowling failed to trouble the batters. In the first match, he picked up two wickets, but failed to get his name in the scoresheet in the second game.

Government tells court RCB's relentless tweeting resulted in Bengaluru stampede
Bengaluru: The state govt on Monday pinned the blame squarely on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) IPL franchise for the stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 that killed 11 people and left 75 others injured. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Referring to successive tweets put out by RCB on the day of the incident, Karnataka govt told the high court those tweets led to a huge public gathering in the city. Appearing for the state govt and police, advocate general (AG) Shashikiran Shetty submitted that while the team was still in Ahmedabad after winning the IPL final, RCB put out multiple tweets, declaring they would hold a victory rally in Bengaluru — without obtaining any permission from the govt. Additional state public prosecutor B N Jagadeesh, too, raised the same point in his submission before the court. Shetty further said the franchise had invited all and sundry in its subsequent tweets to attend the victory celebrations, with 13 crore people viewing those tweets. While arrangements were made for an estimated turnout of about 1.5 lakh people, the actual turnout was much larger primarily because of those tweets. Earlier, senior advocate Sandesh Chouta, appearing for Nikhil Sosale, the marketing and revenue head of RCB, argued that Sosale's arrest was illegal. According to him, Sosale was arrested by Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths and not by Cubbon Park police who had registered the case. He wondered how CCB came into the picture when the govt had handed over the probe to CID. Referring to verbal directives issued by chief minister Siddaramaiah to arrest officials of RCB and DNA Entertainment Ltd, Chouta said such orders cannot be issued since the investigation falls under the domain of the police. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In view of Chouta's claim, Justice SR Krishna Kumar questioned the state govt whether the CM had indeed issued any such instruction. Responding to the judge's observation that "At best, the CM could say that 'the accused would be arrested in accordance with law'," the AG said he would verify that. Opposing grant of any interim relief to RCB, the AG further claimed that petitioners RCB made more than Rs 450 crore from IPL. "They announced some Rs 10 lakh compensation. They did not bother to care about those who lost their lives and suffered injuries. They did not bother to visit those families," he added while pointing out that granting any interim relief is akin to granting final relief, which would seriously affect the ongoing investigation. The hearing was adjourned to Tuesday.
