Travel agents suggest ‘cool' alternatives for domestic tourists
Kolkata: Coffee plantations in God's own Country; a hill station in the heart of Eastern Ghats; divine paradise in India's eastern frontier; colonial charm and nature trails with Himalayan views — travel agents are offering tourists from Kolkata an assortment of appetizing options to cooler climes this summer.

While Darjeeling and places in Sikkim still remain the favourite go-to domestic destinations for tourists from Bengal in summer, travel agents are urging those who have had to cancel trips to Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh following the terror attack and escalation of tension with Pakistan to try out alternative hill stations.Though India is a tropical country, the vastness of India and its geographical diversity leads to many travel options even during summer across east, north-east, south-west and north India. Flight fares to nearly all destinations are currently at normal level. This indicates that people aren't travelling. That also means good deals at hotels for tourists.For those who are in a dilemma over whether to travel far, agents are suggesting
in comfortable hotels in places where one can drive down.
Travel Agents' Federation of India national committee member Anil Punjabi said staycations that had become popular during the pandemic were again in vogue now with people re-evaluating or cancelling their summer vacation plans due to disruptions stemming from heightened tensions between India and Pakistan."The terror attack and India's apt response following escalations of aerial conflict instilled a sense of fear among travellers.

TAAI national committee member Manav Soni said only a few who had urgent travel requirement were buying flight tickets and then travelling by train when the flights are getting cancelled.

Dehradun: Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday issued strict directives to enhance safety standards for helicopter services operating in Uttarakhand. He also called for regular fitness checks of helicopters, a robust and effective SOP for ticket booking and strict compliance with engine safety standards, especially in high-altitude Himalayan regions. Given the frequent weather-related disruptions in heli services, the CM reiterated the importance of installing real-time weather cameras in all Char Dham valleys, including Kedarnath. Dhami also instructed UCADA to study the Vaishno Devi heli service model and recommended deploying only highly experienced pilots for operations in the state. Heli operators were urged to maintain a sensitive and tourist-friendly approach, ensuring a positive travel experience for pilgrims and visitors. Additionally, he directed both heli operators and the administration to conduct cleanliness drives along the Char Dham routes. Highlighting the rising demand for helicopter travel, Dhami noted that over 66,000 passengers have used heli shuttle services this year alone, and multiple helipads are currently under construction. He emphasised that, given Uttarakhand's challenging terrain and status as a key religious tourism hub, heli services are poised to become an essential component of the state's infrastructure. Post Pahalgam attack, anti-terror squad deployed for 1st time at Valley of Flowers
1 2 3 4 Dehradun: Uttarakhand Police has deployed a six-member anti-terror squad (ATS) team at Ghangaria, near the Valley of Flowers, to monitor tourist movement towards the alpine valley as well as popular Sikh pilgrimage spot, Hemkund Sahib, situated nearby, marking the first time such a deployment has taken place in this remote region. The decision is being seen as linked to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 that left 25 tourists and a local dead. Chamoli SP Sarvesh Panwar, told TOI, "The ATS team has been stationed at Ghangaria, the key point for people going to both Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib. The ATS team has been stationed there since May 24, a day before the Hemkund Sahib yatra began, and will work alongside the State Disaster Response Force to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of the pilgrimage and tourist traffic." According to sources, ATS deployment is part of a wider security strategy across Uttarakhand, which shares its border with China, in response to the Pahalgam incident in Jammu & Kashmir. While officials have not cited any direct threat or intelligence input linked to Chamoli district (where the Valley of Flowers lies, and which shares borders with China), police have increased surveillance across major tourist and religious sites in the Himalayan state as a precaution. Also, police have been monitoring social media and providing support to around 1,700 Kashmiri students in Uttarakhand to maintain public order and prevent misinformation. The Valley of Flowers National Park, a Unesco World Heritage site, reopened to tourists on June 1. Located over 9,000 ft above sea level in Chamoli, the park remains open from June to Oct and is known for its alpine flora. On opening day, 83 visitors visited the valley. Declared a national park in 1982, it is home to over 600 plant species, including Brahma Kamal, the state flower of Uttarakhand, along with Aster, Delphinium, Himalayan Blue Poppy, Ranunculus and Potentilla. Hemkund Sahib, the revered Sikh shrine situated nearby, opened to devotees on May 25 and draws thousands of pilgrims every year.
