Fans in Dubai make ICC Champions Trophy truly historic event
The Emirates Cricket Board has thanked the UAE government and the various security and transport authorities for their outstanding work during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Dubai matches.
The tournament concluded on Sunday night at the Dubai International Stadium with India lifting the trophy in front of a capacity 25,000 crowd.
Despite the short turnaround time, the ECB in close collaboration with the International Cricket Council and the event hosts' Pakistan Cricket Board succeeded in delivering a memorable tournament with India taking on Bangladesh, Pakistan, New Zealand (twice) and Australia in their five games including Sunday's exhilarating final.
The ECB praised the UAE government, security and transport authorities for their all-out support in the smooth delivery of the tournament, as well as the cricket fans for their great response to all five matches hosted at the Dubai International Stadium.
'The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Dubai matches were an overwhelming success. The icing on the cake for us at the Emirates Cricket Board was the packed stadium last night which was thoroughly entertained by an enthralling final contested between the two best teams of the tournament," said Subhan Ahmad, ECB Chief Operating Officer.
"The fans were incredible in their support of all five tournament matches that were hosted at the Dubai International Stadium and their passion for the game adds immense value to the sport.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 was the third ICC world event to be hosted in the UAE in less than four years.
"As always, the UAE government, security and transport authorities were at the forefront and worked tirelessly with us in the smooth execution and delivery of the tournament, we are grateful for their support," Ahmad said.
'The ICC, PCB and the ECB worked closely to make the event a success in a short span of time through the efforts of fully committed venue team and the ECB staff that worked with great passion and commitment in the leadup and during the tournament.'

South Africa's 15-man squad for their first-ever appearance in an ICC World Test Championship final contains a mixture of youth and experience. Here is a rundown of the Proteas players gunning for glory at Lord's. Temba Bavuma Bavuma arrives at Lord's fresh from an excellent home summer, scoring centuries against Sri Lanka and Pakistan during series victories which booked his side's place at Lord's. The 35-year-old made his Test debut on Boxing Day of 2014 against the West Indies and is currently listed sixth in the ICC's men's Test batting rankings. Tony de Zorzi De Zorzi captained South Africa at the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2016 but has had to be patient to make his mark on the senior international stage. His first Test century was in Chittagong in October 2024, a sparkling 177, and his command of the pull shot makes the left-hander an attractive player to watch. The 27-year-old is also a fine short leg fielder. Aiden Markram Another to have led South Africa at the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup, lifting the trophy in 2014, Markram is closing in on 3,000 Test runs and has seven centuries to his name in the longest format. The top-order batter captains the Proteas in T20 cricket and guided them to the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup last year, in which they were beaten by India. Wiaan Mulder A seam bowling all-rounder, Mulder is no stranger to English conditions having represented Kent and Leicestershire in recent years – scoring a career best 235 not out for the latter in 2022. The 27-year-old was still at school when he made his first-class debut in 2016 and was promoted up the order in South Africa's most recent Test against Pakistan, batting at number three having never previously come in higher than six. Marco Jansen The giant 2.06m left-armer averages under 22 with the ball after 17 Tests, with the highlight coming in Durban last year when he ripped through Sri Lanka with seven for 13 as the Proteas skittled their opponents for just 42. Jansen is also handy with the bat and blasted a 16-ball half century against India in November 2024. His twin brother, Duan, is also a professional cricketer. Kagiso Rabada An elite pace bowler, Rabada is fifth on South Africa's all-time list of Test wicket takers and arrives at Lord's three shy of levelling Allan Donald's tally of 330. He is ranked second in the world in Tests – with only Jasprit Bumrah ahead of him – and he is already on the honours board at the Home of Cricket after taking five for 52 against England in 2022. Keshav Maharaj South Africa's most successful ever spinner in Test cricket, Maharaj is two shy of reaching 200 wickets and his average is on the right side of 30. The slow left-armer made his Test debut in Perth in 2016 but will be looking to improve on a modest record against this summer's final opponents – he has taken 22 scalps at 45 in nine Tests against Australia. Lungi Ngidi The 29-year-old seamer is making a well-timed return from injury having sat out the home summer in South Africa with a groin problem. He announced his arrival on to the Test scene in style with six for 39 against India in 2018 and currently averages a shade over 23 after 19 appearances. Corbin Bosch Took to Test cricket like a duck to water on his debut against Pakistan in last year's Boxing Day Test, grabbing a wicket with his first ball – and going on to take four for 63 – before striking an unbeaten 81 from number nine. The son of former Proteas Test player Tertius, Bosch's brother Eathan is also a full international having made his ODI debut in February. Kyle Verreynne The wicketkeeper-batter announced himself in Test cricket in February 2022 with a sparkling unbeaten 136 which helped the Proteas level a series in New Zealand. He has become acclimatised to English conditions in the past two summers during spells with Nottinghamshire and began his latest stint with a ton against Essex at Trent Bridge in April. David Bedingham Another player to have excelled in English domestic cricket, Bedingham scored nearly 200 runs more than anyone else in Division One of the County Championship last season and his 279 against Lancashire was the highest score in Durham's first-class history. The 31-year-old right-hander, who can also keep wicket, scored his first – and so far, only – Test century against New Zealand in February 2024. Tristan Stubbs The only way was up for Tristan Stubbs after his Test bow, which saw him become just the second player in history to be dismissed twice on the first day of his debut. The aggressive, inventive batter now has two Test tons to his name and an average of 33.33, while he has excelled in South Africa's domestic red ball competition and remains a key part of his nation's limited overs sides. Ryan Rickelton The stylish left-hander made a dream start to 2025, scoring 259 against Pakistan at Newlands during his first innings as a Test opener before winning the SA20 with MI Cape Town. An all-round sportsman growing up, Rickelton has been in and out of the Test side since his debut in 2022 but will hope that New Year's knock – the joint-seventh highest Test score by a South African – will cement his place for Lord's. Senuran Muthusamy A very useful player with bat and ball, left-arm spinner Muthusamy claimed a memorable scalp for his first Test wicket when he held on to a return catch to dismiss Virat Kohli in October 2019. He has played just three more Tests since but is a reliable operator for Dolphins, with eight first-class centuries and more than 250 wickets to his name. Dane Paterson No-one has had a closer view of Lord's in the build-up to the ICC World Test Championship final than Dane Paterson, who has started the season with Middlesex in England's County Championship. Appearances have been sporadic over his eight-year international career, but the 36-year-old impressed in last year's Boxing Day Test against Pakistan, taking five for 61 – his best figures in the format. UAE captain Waseem, Tryon named ICC Players of the Month for May
The UAE batter Muhammad Waseem and South Africa all-rounder Chloe Tryon have been named as the ICC Men's and Women's Players of the Month for May 2025. Waseem wins the award for the second time after a string of good performances in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 and a home T20I series against Bangladesh. Meanwhile, Tryon had a memorable tour of Sri Lanka as she scored 176 runs at a strike-rate of 131.34 in three ODIs and took six wickets in the three-team tournament in Colombo that also featured India. Tryon had scores of 67 (against India), 35 and 74 (against Sri Lanka) but the highlight was a haul of five for 34 against Sri Lanka which included a hat-trick. The West Indies captain Haley Matthews and India batter Jemimah Rodrigues were the others shortlisted for the monthly award this South Africa didn't enter the final of the ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka, Chloe had a productive month. Though South Africa had a 23-run loss to eventual champions India, Chloe was in fine nick to hit 67 off 43 balls, comprising four boundaries and five sixes, apart from recording figures of 1-46 and taking the prized wicket of Smriti Mandhana. But Chloe saved her best for last as she was at her dominant best for South Africa in their final tri-series game against hosts Sri Lanka. Batting first, Chloe smashed 74 off 51 deliveries, including four fours and five sixes, as South Africa posted a huge 315. Chloe followed it up by picking her maiden five-wicket-haul – 5-34 off her eight overs as she tore through the Sri Lanka batting order, including taking a stunning hat-trick and guiding South Africa to a 76-run victory at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. 'I am really happy with my five-wicket effort and the hat-trick. I was pretty tired most of the time, but I'm happy to have achieved that. You always want to add those milestones to your memories as a cricketer.' 'I'm glad I finally got to tick that off my list. It's still a bit of a blur, to be honest. I think the team carried me throughout that day. I was a little bit sick, so that didn't really help much. But everything came together, and I'm just really happy that I could perform and help the team win,' said Chloe in an ICC statement. The all-rounder is now aiming to build on a consistent set of performances from Sri Lanka when South Africa go on a white-ball tour of the West Indies, starting later this month, and later play the 2025 ODI World Cup in India. The 31-year-old scored 169 runs in five ODIs batting in the middle order and was the Player of the Series in the series against Bangladesh in Sharjah which his side won 2-1. He led the team in this T20I series and scored 54 and 82 in the first two matches opening the batting. Waseem, who also won the award in April 2024, edged all-rounders Brendon McMullen of Scotland and Milind Kumar of the United States. I also want to thank all my team members and support staff as this award is as much for them as it is for me. 'The month of May brought us a historic series win over Bangladesh in Sharjah. Ecclestone to take temporary break from cricket
Experienced spinner Sophie Ecclestone has decided to take some time off from cricket, following a minor injury, to prioritise her well-being. The ICC ODI No.1 ranked bowler was initially rested from the England squad for the series against West Indies since she was recovering from a knee injury. "We all agree that a break now could be beneficial for her to achieve that." Ecclestone was replaced by a new ICC no.1 bowler in T20Is last month but continues to be on top of the ODI bowlers ranking. Ecclestone, who last played in the Indian Premier League in February, will be available for England's home series against India, which starts on 28 June.
