Keir Starmer announces inquiry into grooming gangs who sexually exploited girls

India Today19 hours ago

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday said he would back a national inquiry into grooming gangs that sexually abused thousands of girls across the country, marking a significant shift in the government's stance on the issue.Starmer's announcement comes after Louise Casey, a former senior government official, conducted a "rapid audit" of the current scale and nature of gang-based child sexual exploitation in Britain. The audit had been commissioned in January by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper amid growing public pressure and renewed scrutiny of past failures by authorities.advertisementSpeaking to reporters, Starmer said Casey had initially believed there was no need for a new national inquiry, but changed her position after reviewing the evidence. "She has looked at the material she has looked at and she has come to the view that there should be a national inquiry on the basis of what she has seen," Starmer said. "I have read every single word of her report and I am going to accept her recommendation."
The issue of grooming gangs has long been a deeply sensitive and politically charged subject in the UK. The scandal, which came to light over a decade ago, exposed how gangs-many composed predominantly of Pakistani men-had systematically groomed, trafficked, and raped young white girls, often in towns such as Rotherham, Rochdale, and Telford.Numerous investigations later revealed that local authorities and police had failed to act on reports of abuse for years, often out of fear of being accused of racism or stoking community tensions.advertisementSeveral girls in the UK were befriended by young Muslim men and then passed on to older men who would become their boyfriends. What followed was gang rapes and several degrees of other forms of violence. These grooming gangs had a pattern: girls as young as 10-year-old girls in Rotherham, Oldham and other areas were lured by Pakistani-origin men, then taken to older men who would control and manipulate them. These young girls would then be gang-raped by these men and their relatives and friends for years. The authorities also did not act when these women reported their abuse as they allegedly tried to avoid hurting cultural sensitivities in the UK.The matter returned to the spotlight earlier this year after US tech billionaire Elon Musk accused the British government of not doing enough to address the historic and ongoing exploitation of vulnerable girls. His comments, shared widely on social media, reignited public outrage and prompted renewed calls for a comprehensive and independent inquiry.Until now, the Labour government had resisted demands for a full statutory review, arguing that numerous local and national investigations had already been carried out.Trending Reel

‘Dismissal based on religion by Shani Shingnapur Temple Trust is illegal,' says SP MLA Rais Shaikh

Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh Sunday termed the recent termination of 114 minority employees by the Shani Shingnapur Temple Trust in Maharashtra as an 'illegal and arbitrary act'. Speaking on the issue, Shaikh said, 'Targeting Muslims and Dalits has always been part of the BJP government's long-standing strategy. Their core agenda is to polarise votes along religious lines and seize power. This discrimination is being practiced in all walks of life, and the dismissal of 114 Muslim employees by the Shani Shingnapur Trust is a clear example of the BJP-RSS mindset in action.' The 114 minority employees terminated by the Trust were employed in departments such as waste management, agriculture, and administration. MLA Shaikh further pointed out that the NCP has the highest number of Muslim MLAs in the Maharashtra Assembly and currently holds the Minority Affairs department. 'If the NCP continues to toe the BJP line, no Muslim voter will ever support them again,' warned Shaikh. He added that he plans to meet Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar soon and file a complaint against the NCP MLA who allegedly pressured the Trust to act. The renowned Shani Shingnapur Temple Trust in the Ahmednagar district has claimed that the terminated employees had been absent from duty for several months. Notably, earlier objections had been raised by right-wing groups over minority workers being involved in the painting and maintenance of the temple premises. Tushar Bhosale of the Hindu Spiritual Front and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) MLA Sangram Jagtap had also threatened to launch an agitation against the Trust if the workers were not retrenched.

Indian-Origin Man Dies Days After Australian Cop Allegedly Kneed Him On Neck

Melbourne: A 42-year-old Indian-origin man has died days after an Australian police officer allegedly knelt on his neck during an attempted arrest, a media report said on Sunday. Gaurav Kundi, 42, from Modbury North in Adelaide, died surrounded by his family on Thursday after he was hospitalised for an "unrecoverable" brain injury, 7News Australia reported. Police attempted to arrest Kundi on Payneham Rd at Royston Park, alleging that it witnessed an "altercation" between him and a woman. The video footage of the incident showed Kundi being forced by police while he and his wife, Amritpal Kaur, loudly protested. "I've done nothing wrong," Kundi shouted while Kaur filmed and cried out that the police were acting unfairly. Kundi was rushed to the hospital after his condition declined and he "became unresponsive" during the attempted arrest. Police said Gaurav Kundi violently resisted the arrest and was intoxicated. It said the couple was allegedly arguing, and a passing patrol reportedly mistook the incident for domestic violence. However, Kaur said his husband was simply drunk and loud, not violent. Meanwhile, South Australian (SA) Police Commissioner Grant Stevens told ABC Radio Adelaide it would investigate the incident in addition to a probe by the internal investigation section detectives. The inquiry would review SA Police's policies, practices, procedures, including training in relation to responding to incidents. SA Police said no one was shot, and no police taser was deployed at the scene. The media have compared the arrest to the George Floyd case in the US in 2020. Floyd was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, who pressed his knee and the weight of his body against the 46-year-old Black American man's neck.

Maharashtra: Shani Shingnapur temple dismisses 114 Muslim workers amid protests by Hindutva groups

The trust that manages the Shani Shingnapur shrine in Maharashtra's Ahilyanagar district has dismissed 167 employees, including 114 Muslim workers, allegedly on disciplinary grounds, The Indian Express reported. The Shri Shaneshwar Devasthan Trust cited reasons such as prolonged 'absenteeism, misconduct and other similar violations' to terminate the 167 employees, the newspaper reported. This move comes amid protests by Hindutva groups against the trust's hiring of Muslim employees. In May, a controversy erupted after a video, purportedly showing Muslim employees doing maintenance work inside the temple, was circulated on social media, the Hindustan Times reported. On May 21, Hindutva groups staged a protest over this alleged video, demanding the termination of employment of Muslim workers from the temple, the newspaper reported. The Hindutva groups along with Nationalist Congress Party MLA Sangram Jagtap had announced to hold a 'Hindu Dharma Protection March' on Saturday over the row. 'Shani Shingnapur Devasthan is a temple of the Hindu faith,' the newspaper quoted Jagtap as having said. 'A total of 118 Muslim employees have been recruited at this temple. This is not appropriate.' On Friday, members of the Shri Shaneshwar Devasthan Trust held a meeting where they decided to dismiss all employees flagged for irregular attendance since January, The Indian Express reported. In a meeting held on June 8, the trust had identified 99 employees. A further 68 employees were named for dismissal in Friday's meeting, the newspaper reported. Shri Shaneshwar Devasthan Chief Executive Officer GK Darandale told the Hindustan Times that no one was removed for religious or caste reasons. 'The temple trust employs 2,464 workers but only 900 have been active,' Darandale said. Along with Muslims, there are Hindus and people from different castes on the list of 167 workers who have been dismissed, the Hindustan Times quoted him as saying. Shani Shingnapur is famous as the village where houses have no doors or locks, due to the belief that the Hindu god Shani protects it from theft and crime. The temple's trust, which was established in 1963, employs over 2,400 staff to manage day-to-day operations, maintenance and the upkeep of temple properties, including gardens, gaushalas and agricultural land, The Indian Express reported.
