A severe heatwave has gripped Pakistan's Punjab province, with temperatures soaring up to 50 degrees Celsius in some districts, the
Pakistan Meteorological Department
(PMD) said on Wednesday. The heatwave is expected to continue for the next 48 to 72 hours.
Bhakkar, Noorpur Thal, Gujra-nwala, Hafizabad, Layyah and Mandi Bahauddin experienced extreme temperatures ranging between 48 deg C and 49 deg C on Tuesday and Wednesday. In Lahore, the mercury touched 45°C on Wednesday.
The extreme conditions are part of an ongoing heatwave which is likely to persist until June 13, with temperatures remaining 5 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal across the region, officials said.

Guwahati: The northeast region expects respite from severe heat with a fresh monsoon phase in the next two to three days even as Itanagar and Dibrugarh broke their June temperature records on Thursday. Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh equalled its highest temperature of 38.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday, previously recorded on June 21, 1996. On Thursday, Regional Meteorological Centre chief KN Mohan said, "Now, after intense heat in the last few days, a second spell of monsoon rain can be expected in the next two to three days. There were some hindrances in the flow of the southwest monsoon, but the second spell is most likely to come in two days and continue to cause rain for at least a week." Several localities in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh recorded temperatures exceeding normal ranges by five to eight degrees on Thursday. The World Meteorological Organisation's heat index for Dibrugarh indicated an apparent temperature of roughly 62 degrees Celsius. Itanagar registered the highest temperature in the northeast at 39.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday, with Dibrugarh at 38.7 and Pasighat at 38.6 degrees Celsius. Assam's Jorhat, Mazbat, and North Lakhimpur reached 38.2 degrees Celsius. Pasighat showed the highest variation, exceeding normal by 7.6 degrees Celsius. The IMD announced on Thursday that the northeast would experience light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph over the next seven days. Heavy rainfall is predicted for Arunachal Pradesh during June 14-18, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during June 12-18, with very heavy rainfall expected in Arunachal Pradesh on June 18, Assam and Meghalaya during June 16-18, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on June 17 and 18. The IMD indicated that maximum temperatures would remain 3-5 degrees Celsius above normal across the northeast on Friday, with no significant changes expected.

Heatwave alerts to reach the most exposed group
New Delhi: To make weather forecasting accessible to workers in the informal sector, India Meteorological Department 's daily weather forecasts and heatwave alerts are being shared through community WhatsApp groups. From Thursday, with the help of unions of informal workers, weather messages were displayed on posters and handwritten notices at labour chowks, waste segregation points and vending hubs. The daily weather forecasts are being simplified into colour-coded warnings with easy illustrations and translated into local languages so even unlettered workers can understand them. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general, meteorology, IMD, said the aim was to combine the traditional knowledge of informal workers and the scientific meteorological knowledge. A Met official said, "IMD is co-creating simplified, user-friendly heatwave warnings in Hindi in partnership with community members, ensuring the forecasts are not only understood but also actionable. This people-centric model empowers communities to adapt the alerts into localised formats, turning everyday workers into climate messengers." Autorickshaw driver Naval Upadhyay, 40, said it was for the first time that someone had explained what a heatwave was and what step he could take to protect himself. "The heat has impacted our income because people avoid auto rides in the afternoon. On Wednesday, I felt exhausted in the intense heat and had to take shelter in an ATM," he said, adding the workshop had prepared him for such days now. Pooja Mehra, who works with a 10-minute delivery service, found the workshop informative. "We work continuously for hours during intense heat as we have to deliver items one after another. However, after attending the workshop, I realised that my water intake was less than it should be and I should try to take rest in the shade during the hottest hours," said Mehra, whose work area is Krishna Nagar. Sahajamal Khan, a waste picker in Babarpur, said the unbearable heat affected his health. "My blood pressure suddenly dropped on Wednesday and I had to consult a doctor for medicines," Khan said. "Since I work in the open, the heat impacts my health. However, I learnt that I could take small measures such as drinking water regularly and covering my head to help beat the heat." Akbar Ali, representative of Basti Suraksha Manch, said as a community directly impacted by the heatwave, they were taking the initiative to issue early warnings to people who needed them the most. "We're not just sharing the information, we are organising, acting and protecting each other," he said. 3 killed as heavy showers lash Jalgaon district
Nashik: Jalgaon district was hit by heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds on Wednesday night, leading to the deaths of three individuals and widespread damage. In Erandol taluka, 68-year-old Narayan Patil lost his life when the roof of his house collapsed. In the same taluka, 75-year-old Jagan Rahemate from Ringangaon also lost his life after a wall of his house gave way. In Jamner, Rihinibai Barela was killed when a roof shed fell on her. Five others sustained injuries in separate incidents across Pachora, Yaval, and Jamner talukas. The severe weather also caused significant damage to crops, especially banana plantations, as well as to houses in multiple areas of the district. Power supply was also disrupted in several locations due to the storm. The gusty winds further led to the deaths of 17 livestock: 12 in Erandol, 2 in Jamner, 2 in Bhadgaon, and 1 in Pachora. Additionally, 21 houses were reported damaged across the district. Jalgaon guardian minister Gulabrao Patil directed the district administration to immediately conduct panchanamas of the losses in all talukas of the district.
