Pakistan, China and Afghanistan hold trilateral talks on regional security in Beijing
Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is in Beijing for talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. Both men will also meet Afghanistan's acting foreign minister to discuss regional peace and security, following last month's military standoff between Pakistan and India. Mr Dar earlier met Mr Liu Jianchao — head of the Chinese Communist Party's International Department — who reaffirmed China's strong support for Pakistan's sovereignty and integrity. Beijing is one of Islamabad's closest partners, offering financial lifelines and supplying arms. Hira Mustafa reports from Islamabad and Deborah Wong reports from Hong Kong.

Top retired Chinese general Xu Qiliang dies of illness: State media
BEIJING: Top Chinese general Xu Qiliang, a close ally of President Xi Jinping who was the former vice chair of the powerful Central Military Commission, died of illness at age 75 on Monday (Jun 2) in Beijing, state media reported. Xu served two consecutive terms on the Communist Party's highest military command body between 2012 and 2022, as Xi came to power. Before that, he spent decades in the People's Liberation Army (PLA) air force, rising to Air Force Commander in 2007 after a stint in the PLA General Staff Department. Xu was described as an "outstanding member of the Communist Party" and an "outstanding leader of the People's Liberation Army" in a short obituary published on Monday by state news agency Xinhua. He was the first Central Military Commission (CMC) vice chair not to have been from the land forces, a sign of Beijing's growing emphasis on different branches of the military as the PLA pursues combat integration and modernisation. He emerged seemingly unscathed by the anti-corruption campaign targeting the highest ranks of the PLA soon after Xi came into office, which took down his predecessors Xu Caihou and Guo Boxiong, both vice-chairs of the CMC. China's military has undergone a renewed anti-corruption purge since last year, with over a dozen PLA generals, including two former defence ministers and a serving CMC member, Miao Hua, removed or suspended from their posts. Born into a peasant family in eastern China's Shandong province, Xu joined the PLA in 1966 at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, a decade-long period of turmoil spearheaded by Mao Zedong. He was a strong advocate of military modernisation, helping transform the air force from a reliance on outdated equipment to domestically developed stealth fighters and amphibian assault ships. Xu was commander of an air force unit in Fuzhou, Fujian province, while Xi was the city's Communist Party chief in the early 1990s. It is during this period that the men were reported to have become close.

China's factory activity cools in May as US tariffs hit
BEIJING: China's factory activity in May shrank for the first time in eight months, a private-sector survey showed on Tuesday (Jun 3), indicating US tariffs are now starting to directly hurt the manufacturing superpower. The Caixin/S&P Global manufacturing PMI fell to 48.3 in May from 50.4 in April, missing analysts' expectations in a Reuters poll and marking the first contraction since September last year. It was also the lowest reading in 32 months. The 50-mark separates growth from contraction. The result is broadly in line with China's official PMI released on Saturday that showed factory activity fell for a second month. A federal appeals court temporarily reinstated the most sweeping US tariffs, a day after a trade court ruled that President Donald Trump had exceeded his authority in imposing the duties and ordered an immediate block on them. Two weeks after breakthrough negotiations that resulted in a temporary truce in the trade war between the world's two biggest economies, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Thursday the talks are "a bit stalled". China's Premier Li Qiang last week said the country is mulling new policy tools, including some "unconventional measures", which will be launched as the situation evolves. According to the Caixin survey, new export orders shrank for the second straight month in May and at the fastest pace since July 2023. Producers said the US tariffs restrained global demand. That dragged down overall new orders to the lowest since September 2022. Factory output meanwhile contracted for the first time since October 2023. Employment in the manufacturing sector declined at the sharpest pace since the start of this year, as producers cut headcount. Output prices have fallen for six straight months due to intense market competition. In the auto industry, for example, an intensifying price war in China has stoked fears of a long-anticipated shake-out in the world's largest car market. Robin Xing, Chief China Economist at Morgan Stanley, said this underscores how supply-demand imbalances continue to fuel deflation. "There is growing rhetoric about the need for rebalancing, but recent developments suggest the old supply-driven model remains intact. Thus, reflation is likely to remain elusive." Surprisingly, export charges rose for the first time in nine months, marking the fastest growth since July 2024, as companies cited rising logistics costs and tariffs.

Pakistan to play in Colombo when India hosts women's World Cup
Pakistan will play all their women's 50-over World Cup matches in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo when India hosts this year's tournament, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Monday. Politically-estranged India and Pakistan, who have not played a bilateral series since 2013, will play their matches in neutral venues when either country hosts an ICC event, the sport's global governing body announced in December. "The venues for the knockouts are dependent on Pakistan qualifying as two alternative venues have been identified for one semi-final and the final," the ICC said. "Colombo will be the venue for the first semi-final and the final only if Pakistan qualify for those stages." Bengaluru, where the tournament will start with India playing in the opening match, will host the final on November 2 if Pakistan are knocked out earlier in the tournament, the ICC added. Bengaluru will also stage the second semi-final on October 30, a day after the first semi-final in Colombo or Guwahati. Visakhapatnam and Indore are the two other host cities for the eight-team tournament. India played all their matches in Dubai when Pakistan hosted the men's Champions Trophy this year, including the final which they won. Both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League were suspended last month amid clashes between the two countries following an attack targeting tourists that killed 26 people in Kashmir in April. Matches resumed after a ceasefire was announced. The neutral venue arrangement between the countries will also be in place for the men's T20 World Cup in 2026, which India will co-host with Sri Lanka, and the women's T20 World Cup in 2028 in Pakistan.
