Unity and harmony above all else

KUALA LUMPUR: Hari Raya Aidiladha greetings from all corners of the world were received by Malaysia as Muslims prepare to mark the event today.
Through the Istana Negara Facebook page, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, extended their Aidiladha greetings to all Muslims in the country.
'Their Majesties also hope that the sacrificial ritual (korban) will be carried out well, and will be one that is blessed and acceptable to Allah SWT.
'May this spirit of sacrifice continue to unite the people harmoniously, bringing forth love and universal values of humanity,' said the royal couple yesterday.
Their Majesties also said they are praying for the safety of all haj pilgrims so that they may always be well and blessed with a most enriching experience.
In a series of Facebook posts this week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that greetings were also received from Iran, Turkiye and Pakistan.
In a phone call with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday, Anwar said it is his prayer that haj pilgrims from both nations would be granted a blessed haj and contribute to the development of the ummah upon returning to their respective countries.
He also expressed gratitude to Masoud for facilitating the repatriation of two Malaysian citizens previously detained in Iran, as well as the cordial treatment according to Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir during their recent visit to Teheran as part of joint efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
'In the same discussion, Malaysia welcomes the decision to resume Mahan Air flights from Teheran to Kuala Lumpur, which will undoubtedly open more opportunities for economic ties and people-to-people connections,' he said.
In a separate post, Anwar said he received a phone call from Turkyish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday, during which they discussed the suffering of the Palestinian people, among others.
'We agreed that while the world chooses to remain silent and selective about the plight of Gaza's people, we cannot stand idly by.
'Malaysia fully supports President Erdogan's stance to utilise all available platforms and capabilities to defend the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people,' he said.
Anwar said they also discussed Erdogan's recent official visit to Malaysia, which he described as the most successful in the history of Turkiye-Malaysia ties.
'I view the visit as a manifestation of the alignment of values and the clear direction both nations share in upholding justice, sovereignty and the development of the global ummah,' the Prime Minister said, adding that he also received Aidiladha greetings from Erdogan.
Yesterday, Anwar also took a call from Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who is himself performing the haj.
'I conveyed the wish for both Pakistan and India to achieve meaningful and lasting peace, in order to assure regional stability. And I hope that PM Shehbaz's official visit to Malaysia can be rescheduled as soon as his domestic situation allows it,' said Anwar on Facebook.
In Mecca, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the haj is a powerful platform for unity and a symbol of universal solidarity that can restore the strength of the Muslim ummah if it is embraced with sincerity and deep understanding.
He said as Muslims around the world face increasing division due to narrow-minded ideologies and a fading sense of brotherhood, the spirit of haj must be embraced to rekindle the values of love, mutual respect and fraternity among the faithful, he said in a Bernama report on Thursday.
'If we reflect with open hearts, we will see that haj is a commanding symbol of unity for Muslims worldwide. Look at the millions of people from different races, skin colours, cultures and languages gathering in one place, facing one qiblah, calling out one name: Allah SWT.
'There are no titles, no castes, no worldly pride. All that remains are two pieces of white cloth and hearts humbled before the Creator. Here, Islam abolishes discrimination and upholds true justice, that a person's worth lies not in appearance or wealth but in piety and righteous deeds,' he said.
Mohd Na'im also reminded pilgrims to safeguard their safety and belongings to avoid anything that could jeopardise their haj experience.
'Pilgrims are also reminded to practise tolerance and give mutual assistance, and to avoid any kind of dispute that may undermine the spiritual essence of haj,' he said.
Earlier, Mohd Na'im spent time visiting the accommodation tents and mingling with Muassasah pilgrims here.
Malaysia received a haj quota of 31,600 pilgrims from Saudi Arabia for this haj season.
In Kuala Lumpur, National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the Aidiladha celebration should serve as a moment of heartfelt reflection on the meaning of sacrifice in the context of humanity and unity.
He said the celebration is not just about the ritual of sacrifice, but also a symbol of sincerity and solidarity.
'These values are vital in building a peaceful and harmonious nation,' he said in a Facebook post yesterday.
Yesterday, Anwar joined in the takbir raya at Surau Al-Ikhwan, Jalan Pinggiran Putra at Putrajaya, where Imam Mustafa Kamal Abdullah led the ceremony attended by more than 500 worshippers after Friday prayers.
Accompanied by Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Anwar arrived at the mosque at 1pm after having lunch at Restoran Pak Zain Patin in Dengkil.

PETRONAS lay-offs not Petros-related, says DPM

Aidiladha offering: Fadillah (second from right) presenting sacrificial meat to one of the recipients while attending the Kampung Sungai Laruh sacrificial ceremony at the Taman Hussein Mosque in Kuching. — Bernama KUCHING: PETRONAS' move to trim its workforce by 10% is not linked to the national oil company's ongoing issues with Petros, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He said the national oil company's move to downsize its workforce was instead due to global challenges. The restructuring process, he said, is necessary given the decline in crude oil prices. Fadillah also plans to meet with PETRONAS to get more details on the restructuring process. 'That is why PETRONAS has to relook its entire operation. 'I am planning a meeting with them to get a briefing on the matter and to ensure that the number of lay-offs can be reduced, if not avoided,' Bernama reported him as saying after the Aidiladha sacrificial event at Taman Hussein Mosque here yesterday. On June 5, PETRONAS president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz said the national oil company would be cutting 10% of its workforce to cope with challenging operating conditions, particularly due to falling crude prices. Tengku Muhammad Taufik said the number of staff involved in the downsizing process currently stands at around 5,000, and those affected will be notified in stages next year. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on the following day that the lay-off exercise involved mostly contract workers. On May 21, the federal and the Sarawak state governments signed a joint declaration, establishing clear parameters and a collaborative framework for PETRONAS and Petros in the oil and gas sector. According to the joint declaration, Petronas will continue its functions, activities, responsibilities and obligations entrusted to the company, under the Petroleum Development Act and its regulations. Following the joint declaration, the Prime Minister's Office said all relevant federal and state laws relating to gas distribution in Sarawak are to co-exist and be respected by all parties.

Royal warning on haj travel scams

Gathering in faith: Sultan Sharafuddin with Amirudin (in purple) meeting with congregants at Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah in Shah Alam. — Bernama SHAH ALAM: Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has expressed sadness and disappointment over the rise in fraudulent haj travel packages affecting Muslims in the country. His Royal Highness said it was especially disheartening that those exploiting the situation were Muslims themselves, who were willing to deceive their fellow believers for personal gain. Sultan Sharafuddin decreed that stern action be taken against any individual or travel agency offering haj packages that take advantage of and deceive Muslims. The Ruler said this in a post on the Selangor Royal Office's Facebook page, in which His Royal Highness and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, extended Hari Raya Aidiladha greetings to Muslims across Malaysia. His Royal Highness also called on Muslims to uphold the sanctity of the haj by ensuring that all arrangements are made through licensed and recognised agents and companies authorised by the authorities to manage haj and umrah affairs, Bernama reported. At the same time, Their Royal Highnesses prayed that Malaysian pilgrims would be granted a mabrur haj and return home safely. According to the statement, the Sultan and the Tengku Permaisuri also hoped that this Aidiladha would inspire all Muslims to be grateful for Allah's blessings and to perform the sacrificial rites to help the poor, as well as reflect on the plight of the less fortunate. Sultan Sharafuddin and Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin performed the solat sunat Aidiladha with more than 10,000 congregants at Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah in Shah Alam yesterday. Also present was Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Pakistan's Asean partnership bid to be discussed

Warm wishes: Anwar shaking hands with members of the public after attending the Aidiladha prayers at the Putra Mosque in Putrajaya. — Bernama PUTRAJAYA: Pakistan's bid to become a full dialogue partner with Asean will be discussed with leaders of the regional grouping, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'It will be brought up for discussion at the Asean leaders' conference,' he told reporters briefly after performing the Aidiladha prayers at the Putra Mosque here yesterday. He said this when asked to comment on Pakistan's renewed efforts to elevate its partnership status with Asean, Bernama reported. Yesterday, Pakistan's High Commissioner to Malaysia Syed Ahsan Raza Shah said that Islamabad is renewing its push to become a full dialogue partner, reflecting the country's commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and deepening engagement with the bloc. Pakistan, which became Asean's first sectoral dialogue partner in 1993, values its cooperation with the regional grouping and aims to further expand the ties. In October last year, Anwar was quoted as saying that Malaysia fully supported Pakistan's efforts to become a full dialogue partner of Asean. When asked about Pakistan welcoming his offer to mediate in the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, Anwar said Malaysia only hopes for a peaceful resolution. 'I have no role to play; I'm simply offering my opinion,' he said. Earlier, Anwar and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, performed the Aidiladha prayers alongside nearly 15,000 congregants at the Putra Mosque. Anwar, dressed in a light blue baju Melayu, arrived at 7.50am and was greeted by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Dr Zulkifli Hasan. The Prime Minister also joined the congregation to recite the takbir raya before performing the Aidiladha prayers, led by the Grand Imam of the Putra Mosque, Dr Muhamad Zakuwa Rodzali. He then listened to the Aidiladha sermon, which emphasised the importance of intention, proper conduct and sincerity in performing the sacrificial ritual. Before departing, he took time to mingle and shake hands with members of the congregation. Meanwhile, Anwar said Malaysia supports the measures taken by Thailand and Cambodia in addressing the border dispute involving both countries. He said Malaysia, as the Chair of Asean 2025, will follow the development of the negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia through the Joint Boundary Commission scheduled for June 14 in Phnom Penh, in addition to providing the cooperation required for the talks. 'I spoke with both the prime ministers (of Thailand and Cambodia), and they have taken several measures that we support, namely the June 14 talks regarding the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute. 'I'm ready to follow and provide the cooperation (that is) required. So far, both governments have taken the stance of continuing negotiations amicably,' he told the media. On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops were involved in a brief skirmish in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, which reportedly resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Cambodia has since announced its intention to bring the border dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Thailand, meanwhile, has reportedly reiterated its commitment to resolving the issue peacefully in accordance with international law, as well as existing agreements and memoranda with Cambodia.
