Kuki group warns Meiteis not to enter their areas during upcoming festival
IMPHAL: A group in Manipur has warned Meiteis not to enter the
Kuki-majority areas
during a five-day festival to be held in Ukhrul district next week. Ethnic clashes between the two warring sides in the northeastern state have left at least 260 people dead and thousands homeless since May 2023.
"We strongly advise all members of the Meitei community to refrain from entering or crossing our areas at any time. Any violation of this direction will be considered intentional, and individuals shall bear full responsibility for any consequences that may follow," the Kuki Zo Village Volunteer Eastern Zone said in a statement.
People from various parts of the state visit Ukhrul during the Shirui festival, to be held between May 20 and 24. The route from Imphal, where Meiteis are in the majority, to Ukhrul passes through certain villages where Kukis are the dominant force.
In Ukhrul district, however, the Naga tribal people are in majority.
Manipur DGP Rajiv Singh recently visited Ukhrul district to review the preparations for the annual festival held to honour the state flower of Shirui Lily, found in abundance in the hills of Ukhrul district.
Popular Tangkhul Naga social worker Asang Kashar condemned the warning.
"This is directly a challenge to every citizen of Manipur and shows they (Kukis) are against peace," Kashar said.

Congress Chief Kharge, Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi hold meeting with Manipur leadership
New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi met with the Manipur leadership on Thursday. The meeting was held at Indira Bhawan in New Delhi. Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam and KC Venugopal, General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee, were present at the meeting. On its official handle posted on X, Congress said, 'Congress President Kharge today convened a meeting with the Manipur leadership, wherein LoP Rahul Gandhi and Congress General Secretary (Org) KC Venugopal attended.' Recently, the state has witnessed incessant rainfall that led to waterlogging at several places, prompting authorities to launch rescue operations. Torrential rains led to a massive breach of the Imphal River's embankment at four points, causing extensive flooding in Imphal East. Recently, nearly 25 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs met at the residence of party MLA Thongam Biswajit Singh in Imphal to push for the formation of a popular government in Manipur. On May 28, nearly 10 MLAs, including eight from the BJP, one from the National People's Party (NPP), and one Independent MLA, met Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal to stake a claim to form a government in the state. Ten MLAs, including eight from the BJP, one from the NPP, and one Independent MLA, met Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal, demanding the formation of a 'popular' government in the ethnic violence-hit state. President's Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13, days after BJP leader N. Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister. Ethnic conflict broke out in the State on May 3, 2023, causing the loss of lives of hundreds of people. The decision, exercised under Article 356 of the Constitution, means that the state's administrative functions will now be directly controlled by the President through the Governor. The unrest in Manipur primarily involved clashes between the majority Meitei community and the minority Kuki-Zomi tribes. Tensions escalated over disputes related to economic benefits, job quotas, and land rights. The violence resulted in hundreds of fatalities and displaced approximately 60,000 individuals. (ANI)

Despite Pak Pressure, Malaysia Warmly Welcomed Indian Delegation: BJP MP Hemang Joshi To NDTV
New Delhi: In a major diplomatic success for India, Malaysia extended a warm and official welcome to an Indian parliamentary delegation despite behind-the-scenes pressure from Pakistan, said BJP MP Dr Hemang Joshi in an exclusive conversation with NDTV after returning from a five-nation visit. Dr Joshi, part of the multi-party delegation that toured Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, revealed that Pakistan made indirect attempts to derail the Malaysian leg of the tour, but failed to achieve any disruption. "We had ten programmes scheduled in Malaysia and completed all of them as planned," he said. "Despite it being a national holiday on the King's birthday, we were able to meet the Malaysian Speaker and leaders from all major political parties." Malaysia, Indonesia Reject Pakistan's Terror Narrative Dr Joshi said the visit was particularly significant in Muslim-majority nations like Malaysia and Indonesia, where Pakistan has historically tried to influence public perception against India. "Pakistan's propaganda found no takers. Both countries made it clear that terrorism and violence have no place in Islam and condemned any justification of terror in the name of religion," he said. He noted that the positive response from Malaysian counterparts exceeded expectations, especially considering Islamabad's confidence that the Indian delegation would be sidelined. Pakistan's Reaction "Proof of Our Success" Following the delegation's engagements in Malaysia, Pakistan issued an official press release in protest-something Dr Joshi described as a confirmation of India's effective outreach. "Their press release only shows they were shaken by our success. It's a clear indication that we made a strong impact," he told NDTV. The delegation also sought support from Malaysia on issues like India's case at the FATF and the OIC, where Pakistan has consistently attempted to push anti-India resolutions. "Rahul Gandhi's Statements Embolden Pakistan" Dr Joshi also launched a strong political attack back home, targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He accused Mr Gandhi of making remarks that damage India's image and are celebrated more in Pakistan than in India. "It is shameful. His words hurt the morale of our armed forces and citizens alike. We've urged the Lok Sabha Speaker to guide him on basic parliamentary conduct," Dr Joshi said. The five-nation tour is part of India's growing effort to build international consensus against terrorism, while countering Pakistan's narrative across diplomatic and global platforms.

Snacks like M&M's, Skittles, and Doritos ‘Not recommended for human consumption' in US? Here's what the Texas Bill proposes
A new legislative move in Texas has ignited nationwide debate as the state's GOP-majority legislature advances a bill requiring warning labels on various processed food products, including popular snacks such as M&M's, Skittles, and Doritos. The proposed labels would declare these items as 'not recommended for human consumption' if they contain additives restricted or banned in countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, or the European Union, as per a report by the New York Post. Bill Targets Controversial Food Additives Titled Senate Bill 25 , the measure mandates that beginning in 2027, any food or beverage product sold in Texas containing synthetic dyes, bleached flour, or other controversial ingredients must carry a clearly visible warning label. The label would read: 'WARNING: This product contains an ingredient that is not recommended for human consumption by the appropriate authority in Australia, Canada, the European Union, or the United Kingdom.' The legislation is part of a broader initiative supported by U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has made food transparency a cornerstone of his 'Make America Healthy Again' campaign. 'We are committed to protecting public health by ensuring families know what's in their food,' Kennedy stated earlier, as mentioned in a report by the New York Post. Governor's Office Reviewing the Legislation With the legislative session having concluded on Monday, Governor Greg Abbott now has 20 days to sign or veto the measure. A spokesperson from the Governor's office said that Abbott is carefully examining the implications of the bill. 'Governor Abbott will continue to work with the legislature to ensure Texans have access to healthy foods to care for themselves and their families,' said press secretary Andrew Mahaleris. If enacted, the bill would require warning labels to be printed at a font size no smaller than the smallest existing FDA-mandated text on packaging. It also calls for the label to be prominently displayed with sufficient contrast for visibility. Food Industry Pushes Back The proposed labeling rule has met resistance from major corporations. In a joint letter dated May 19, industry leaders including PepsiCo, Mondelez, Coca-Cola, Conagra Brands, and Walmart urged Texas lawmakers to reconsider the bill, citing its sweeping scope and potential confusion for consumers. 'The food labeling provision in this bill casts an incredibly wide net — triggering warning labels on everyday grocery items based on foreign standards, not on regulations from Texas authorities or the U.S. FDA,' the letter argued. Walmart, which was among the signatories, issued a statement saying it is closely tracking legislative developments and deferred further comment to the Texas Retailers Association, which also contributed input during bill discussions. A consultant representing the retail association noted, 'Texas retailers and our members including Walmart worked hard on this bill, made some changes, and we'll see how it develops over the next 20 days.' Consumer Groups Warn of Confusion and Costs Industry experts and advocacy groups warn the proposed law could bring unintended consequences. John Hewitt, senior vice president of the Consumer Brands Association, has called for Governor Abbott to veto the measure. 'The ingredients used in the U.S. food supply are safe and have been rigorously evaluated,' Hewitt said. 'This legislation could result in inaccurate warning language, legal risks, and unnecessary alarm among consumers.' As the state awaits Abbott's decision, the future of household snack names like Skittles, M&M's, and Doritos in Texas grocery aisles remains uncertain. If passed, Texas would become the first U.S. state to mandate such foreign-comparison warning labels on processed foods. FAQs What is Senate Bill 25 in Texas? It's a proposed law that mandates warning labels on foods containing additives banned or restricted in the UK, EU, Canada, or Australia, targeting products like M&M's, Doritos, and Skittles. What would the warning label say? The label would read: 'WARNING: This product contains an ingredient that is not recommended for human consumption by the appropriate authority in Australia, Canada, the European Union, or the United Kingdom.'
