'Probably The Best Wicket': Lungi Ngidi On Steve Smith's Dismissal In 2nd Innings

Ngidi trapped Steve Smith (13) in front of the wickets on the fifth ball of the 19th over of Australia's second innings in the ongoing match at Lord's.
South Africa's Lungi Ngidi reflected on his impactful second innings spell on Day 2 of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at Lord's. He acknowledged that dismissing Steve Smith was likely the 'best wicket" he could have secured.
Following a strong start from South Africa, where Kagiso Rabada quickly dismissed Usman Khawaja (6) and Cameron Green (0), and Marco Jansen removed Marnus Labuschagne (22), Ngidi claimed the crucial wicket of Smith, trapping him lbw for 13 to leave Australia struggling at 48/4.
'I think because of the stage we're playing on, that's probably the best wicket I could've gotten. Having struggled a bit in the first innings and then to be able to get that wicket at that stage, it probably ranks very high up there for me. I can't put into words how I felt about taking that wicket. Such a relief," Ngidi told ICC Digital.
After a tough first day, where he recorded figures of 0/45 from his eight overs, Ngidi made a strong comeback on Day 2, finishing with three for 53.
'I probably tried to do too much too early, ended up leaking runs, putting myself under pressure and then you're chasing the game from there. I was putting a bit of pressure on myself. Bowling in the first innings, seeing the guys that have gone ahead, they've performed so well, taken wickets, you want to carry on that momentum," he said.
'With Test cricket, you've got two chances as a bowler. The coach said, 'just go play your game, don't worry about anything that has gone on before, it's your moment now. When you get the ball, just make it count,'" Ngidi recalled.
Pat Cummins' impressive spell had earlier reduced South Africa to just 138, giving Australia a 74-run lead in the first innings. However, the Proteas' fast bowlers responded fiercely, with Rabada and Ngidi combining for six wickets, leaving Australia at 144/8 going into the third day.
'The first innings probably didn't go as planned. Once I got a bit of rhythm from the other end, I could feel that I was putting the ball in the right areas and there was still some assistance from the wicket. I felt that would probably lead to the dismissal I was aiming for.
'And then, yeah, I got it spot on, so very happy about that. It definitely meant a lot. We're excited about the position that we're in," Ngidi concluded.

Watch: Aiden Markram Gets Emotional After Scoring Magical Ton For South Africa Vs Australia In WTC Final

South Africa's left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj called opener Aiden Markram a "big-match player" as the latter scored a century during his outing in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025 against Australia at the Home of Cricket, Lord's in London on Friday. Markram (102* runs off 159 balls) scripted history by becoming the first Proteas batter to score a hundred in an ICC tournament final. He also became the fourth batter after Jacques Kallis (113* against Sri Lanka in the 1998 ICC Knockout semifinal against SL), Herschelle Gibbs (116* against India in CT 2002 semifinals), and David Miller (101 against Australia in the World Cup 2023 semifinal) to hit a century for SA in ICC knockout matches. Markram's masterclass! #AidenMarkram slams a stunning century as South Africa roar back into the #WTCFinal Will this be the knock that leads them to glory? WATCH DAY 4 👉🏻 #WTCFinal | #SAvAUS | SAT, JUN 14, 2.30 PM onwards on Star Sports 1, Star Sports 1 Hindi & JioHotstar — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) June 13, 2025 Speaking at ICC Digital after Day 3, Maharaj said, "I saw a different sort of desire and focus in Aiden's eyes today when he came off the field (prior to batting) as I think he wanted to rectify the mistake that he made in the first innings." "Kudos to him to put that into place. He's a big match player and big players rise up to the moment and rectify their mistakes very quickly. There's no better fitting moment for him to get a Test hundred here at Lord's in a final against probably a team that I don't think they've ever lost a final," the Proteas cricketer added. Maharaj also paid tribute to captain Temba Bavuma (65* runs from 121 balls), after his captain showed enormous determination to battle a hamstring injury and played a vital role in the unbeaten stand of 143 that has South Africa close to victory. "He had a little bit of a niggle, but the warrior and fighter that he is was there with Aidan to support it. It was amazing to hear how they complemented each other when they came off at the tea break, just hearing about how they're going to go about their business and understanding that obviously Temba can't run at full tilt, but Aiden embraced that," the 35-year-old player concluded.

This was very long back. South Arica have a history of 'choking' in the semi-finals of ICC tournaments. Their only ICC trophy win was the ICC Knockout tournament win in 1998. Aiden Markram has potentially played the match-wining knock for South Africa. He received a hero's welcome on his way back to the pavilion after the end of Day 3. WTC Final Live Score: South Africa are on the verge of clinching their first world title in cricket as they need just 69 runs more to win the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord's against Australia. Chasing 282 for win, South Africa ended Day 3 on 213/2 with Aiden Markram hitting unbeaten 2012, while skipper Temba Bavuma was on 65 not out despite struggling with a hamstring injury . South Africa on brink of cricket history South Africa's biggest ever ICC trophy win is the inaugural Champions Trophy in 1998 and they have never won a World Cup or WTC final. But they now stand on the brink of history. They still have eight wickets in hand as conditions have improved drastically at Lord's. Australia, meanwhile, are hoping to become the first team to win back-to-back WTC finals, having beaten India in the summit clash in 2023. They will hope for quick early wickets in the first session on Day 4. However, for that they will need to have a more proactive approach rather than the defensive fielding setup they picked on Day 3 after Markram and Bavuma started to rotate the strike.
