Oman: Infrastructure deals signed for Palm Hills in Khasab
MUSCAT: Agreements have been signed to implement key infrastructure services for Palm Hills, a major real estate development in Khasab that is poised to redefine modern living in the region.
As part of the Integrated Residential Neighbourhoods Initiative by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, the project aims to set new benchmarks for sustainable community development in Oman.
Musandam Global Investment Company SAOC is spearheading this transformative project by finalising critical infrastructure agreements. With an investment estimated at RO 70 million, Palm Hills will span 635,000 square metres and offer a comprehensive mix of facilities.
The development plans include 650 residential units integrated with commercial spaces, a hotel and essential public amenities such as a mosque, a public majlis, sports fields, a medical centre and a nursery — all surrounded by ample green areas.
In addition to these, the project will host a branch of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Musandam, reinforcing the region's commitment to enhancing educational opportunities alongside urban growth.

The infrastructure framework for Palm Hills is designed to ensure that the community is well-equipped with modern utilities. Agreements have been inked for the construction of water and sewage networks in collaboration with Nama Water Services Company, while partnerships with Nama Electricity Distribution Company will see the establishment of robust electricity distribution systems.
Furthermore, a fibre optic network is set to be installed through cooperation with Oman Broadband Company, ensuring that the development is connected with state-of-the-art digital infrastructure. This integrated approach not only secures reliable utility services but also bolsters the overall sustainability of the project.
A distinctive feature of Palm Hills is its appeal to both local and international investors. Twenty-five per cent of the residential units are earmarked for sale to Gulf nationals and foreign buyers, a strategic move expected to enhance the investment allure and drive real estate growth in Musandam.
First introduced to the market during the 3rd Oman Real Estate Expo (OREX) and Oman Design & Build Week last year, the project embodies the broader vision of the Integrated Residential Neighbourhoods Initiative to deliver affordable, high-quality housing solutions that cater to diverse needs.
As construction moves forward, Palm Hills is set to generate significant economic momentum in Khasab by creating job opportunities across construction, real estate, hospitality and retail sectors.

Physical gold versus digital gold: How to choose?
Investing in gold is a crucial decision for many investors. Gold has been a highly sought-after asset class due to its rarity, liquidity, and protection against inflation. It is also considered a safe haven asset. Investing in gold is a crucial decision for many investors. The question is how to invest, when to invest, and how much to invest. There are two ways to invest in gold, viz, physical gold and digital gold. Let us examine the pros and cons of both types of investments. PHYSICAL GOLD: GOLD COINS VS GOLD BARS Physical gold refers to jewelry, gold coins, and gold bars. Buying gold in the form of ornaments has inherent risks, viz, loss on making charges, taxes, safekeeping, and purity. The next option is gold coins and bullion. Both are advisable. Gold bars are 24 carat with 999.9 purity, while gold coins are 22 carat with 916 purity. A key advantage of gold bars is their lower premiums compared to gold coins, making them cost-effective for bulk purchases. Another advantage of gold bars is that there is no value-added tax. (VAT). For example, if you buy gold coins for RO 5000, you have to pay a VAT of RO 250. (@ 5 per cent). Suppose you sell it at a later date, the VAT paid, ie, RO 250, is a loss for you. But gold bars are VAT-free, which makes them attractive to buy. The lower premium and high purity make gold bars an attractive investment in the long term. Between the gold coins and gold bars, gold bars need a higher amount, while gold coins need a relatively smaller amount. Also, gold coins are more liquid than gold bars in view of their size and weight. However, gold bars are suggested as a diversified investment with a long-term horizon, subject to storage and insurance costs. Investing in gold is a crucial decision for many investors. DIGITAL GOLD The current trend is E-Gold or digital gold. Digital gold, in simple terms, is the electronic form of gold investments. This method is very convenient, cost-effective, and no worry about its purity and safekeeping. Digital gold is becoming popular globally. For example, digital investment in India has grown by over 70 per cent post-pandemic, and a large number of investors are looking for online gold investment. Gold savings Mutual Funds, Gold ETFs, online gold investment apps, etc are popular digital gold investment options. Through the online applications, one can buy, sell, and hold gold in digital form. Under this scheme, gold with a purity of 999.9 is purchased and kept digitally. This gold is backed by physical gold and kept with trusted custodians. This is best suited for long-term investment in gold as part of your diversified portfolio. The redemption may be made in the form of physical gold coins, gold bars, cash, ornaments, or a combination of these. For ornaments, making, and other charges are to be borne by the investor. In India, MMTC-PAMP is one of the leaders offering digital gold of 999.9 purity. G-Pay, Phonepe, Paytm, Amazon Pay etc are popular digital gold investment apps. The gold so bought is maintained in the Gold Accumulation Plan (GAP), which can be verified by the investors. In Oman, several gold merchants and jewellery shops offer this digital form of buying gold. HOW TO INVEST IN GOLD Gold prices have skyrocketed to new heights in the last few years. There are several reasons for the rally, including the recent trade and tariff policies of the Trump administration. During turbulent times, the global investing community shifts its assets to gold, as gold is considered a safe haven. The price of 1 troy ounce of gold (31.1035 grammes) was $2,290 in April 2024, and now it stands at $3,126. One gramme of 22 carat gold was RO 31 in December 2024, while it is above RO 37 per gramme now. Investors waited to cool down the price, but it rallied due to global reasons. So the question is how and when to buy gold. The thumb rule is that one will not be able to catch the best price. The gold market is highly volatile. The practical option is to stay invested for the long term and buy the gold consistently at regular intervals, irrespective of the price. This helps to average out the price. Buying gold coins and bars may not be practical under this method, as this requires a large amount. Here comes the advantage of investing smaller amounts at regular intervals in digital gold. Among other investments, select a trusted online app and buy gold regularly, according to your capacity to buy, with long-term objectives. Both holding physical and digital gold have their advantages and disadvantages. One can touch and feel the physical form of gold, while the virtual forms are intangible. Undoubtedly, digital gold is an excellent investment alternative to fight inflation and diversify your investment portfolio. Having said that, the investment in gold is also subject to market risks. 2022 © All right reserved for Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA) Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. Oman to boost gas pipeline capacity
MUSCAT: OQ Gas Networks (OQGN), the sole owner and operator of Oman's national gas transportation system, is targeting a significant expansion of its pipeline network to support both volume growth, as well as enable the strategic management of the countrywide gas supply grid. Future growth plans outlined by the publicly traded company – part of OQ Group – envision a 5.6 per cent rise in the network's current length of 4,235 km, and a 13.1 per cent increase in the network's current capacity of 70.48 billion cubic metres (BCM). This growth is proposed to be achieved by 2027, the company noted in its 2024 Annual Report. 'OQGN's business plans align with Oman Vision 2040, focusing on energy diversification, digital transformation, and sustainable growth. During the next three years, the Company aims to expand its total pipeline length to nearly 4,500 km and increase network capacity to nearly 80 BCM,' the company stated. Gas demand is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 4.7 per cent between 2024 and 2030, according to OQGN. In 2024, the company delivery 42.98 BCM of gas, entailing a 3.5 per cent increase over the previous year's total. Consumers included LNG facilities, power and desalination plants, and industrial sectors throughout the country. Of the many suppliers channeling natural gas to OQGN, through state-owned Integrated Gas Company (IGC), the Unified Shipper, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) contributed a 56.8 per cent share. The largest consumer was the LNG sector, accounting for 41.3 per cent of total gas consumption, followed by the industrial and commercial sectors at 27.6 per cent. Significantly, OQGN's new pipeline and capacity growth will be driven by around 10 ongoing projects, including the following strategic initiatives: Fahud-Suhar Loop Line: It entails the construction of an additional 193 km, 42-inch loop line from the Fahud Compressor Station to Block Valve Station-6 in the Al Dhahirah Governorate, running parallel to two existing 32-inch pipelines from Fahud Compressor Station to Suhar. The project also includes the construction of a 2 km, 16-inch spur line to supply gas to the proposed Ibri Industrial Estate GSS and the extension of six block valve stations. When completed in 2027, the project will boost capacity at Suhar by more than 26 per cent. Central Rich and Lean Gas Segregation Project (CRL): Centring on the development of a gas blending station in the Central Region for rich and lean gas segregation, this project also includes a 48-inch, 65km loop line extension from Block Valve Station 9 to the Sur GSS. Total investment in the project, which will enhance gas value by segregating rich and lean gas, is around RO 70.8 million. The project has been partly commissioned. Additionally, OQGN is rolling out a Long-Term Network Development Plan (LTNDP) designed to analyze and balance gas supply and demand. Updated annually, this tool provides a seven-year forecast to ensure the network can meet future requirements related to the rise in consumption due to population growth or large new industrial projects. 'This planning process helps identify bottlenecks, assess infrastructure adequacy, and guide investment decisions made by the Government of Oman, the Shipper (IGC), and the Regulator (APSR) to plan for network capacity, supply, and gas distribution to different regions. The current LTNDP covers the period from 2024 to 2031,' the company added. 2022 © All right reserved for Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA) Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc.
