Savannah Sips: 208 Wine Bar

Yahoo07-02-2025

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Sunset views, sensational atmosphere and so many wines to sip on. These are just a few things you could use to describe 208 Wine Bar in downtown Savannah.
Perfectly placed between Bay and River St., 208 Wine Bar is the result of a crazy idea owner Christina Pirovits had with a neighbor back in 2020. According to Pirovits, it was a long journey to where 208 is now but in the end, she feels nine months later it came together to become the bar that people wanted to see created.
When asked what it is that makes 208 so special Pirovits had this to say:
'208 has changed my entire life. I am not a risk-taker. This is the biggest risk I have ever taken in my life and it has not been easy but it has been the most incredible journey. Every friend I made in Savannah was in this bar. I met my fiance in this bar. I have an incredible team and an incredible community that I do so much good with. It is just an incredible community that has sprung out of what was once a completely beaten down room and now it is this beautiful bar.'
208 offers a wide range of events for everyone to enjoy. To see the full list of upcoming events click here.
Whether you're a white wine, red wine or bubbly person, 208 has the atmosphere and the vintage to satisfy any palate. They also offer 'guided wine tours' to help those with adventurous tastes or those who haven't yet decided on their palate.
Tip from the interviewer: I have it on good authority that you can not go wrong ordering the Tempranillo.

King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation holds new board member reception

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – On Sunday, June 8, the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation marked a significant milestone in its 40-year legacy of preserving and promoting Savannah's African American history, culture, and community leadership. The foundation hosted a New Board Member Reception and Open House at the historic Beach Institute African American Cultural Center. Chairman Jerry Q. Greene, Sr., spoke to those in attendance about the foundation's guiding purpose, stating, 'History teaches us how people who looked like us solved similar problems in the past.' With their generous support, many in attendance were inducted into the newly established 'Friends of the Cottage', a dedicated group formed to help secure resources and broaden community investment in the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation. 'Friends of the Cottage' will serve as an important fundraising and advocacy arm for the foundation by supporting its preservation efforts, educational programming, and cultural initiatives, including exhibits like 'The Art of Richard Law' and 'Priced Out', a collaborative project with Housing Savannah and SCAD Serve. Guests were also treated to a guided tour of both the Beach Institute and King-Tisdell Cottage, allowing them to experience firsthand the rich legacy of African American entrepreneurship, education, and resilience. Georgia Power working to reduce number, length of outages

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Whether it's a brief shower or a severe storm, Georgia Power said they are investing in their infrastructure by upgrading their energy grid for their 2.7 million customers. Georgia Power spokesperson Matthew Kent said they're doing this through smart grid technology. The company hopes to reduce outages when severe weather moves in. 'The technology can remotely restore power in the event that a line is down if there's an available way to reroute that power,' Kent said. 'But also at your home, smart meters and other smart technology on the lines, we're using all of that together to make sure that we can make your power outage times as minimal as possible after a storm,' Kent said. 'The main goal is to minimize any disruption. We know how difficult it is to be without power.' In 2023, the company reported customers were seeing up to 50% improvement. According to Kent, Hurricane Helene last year gave the company an opportunity to upgrade damaged technology. 'We had something like 11,000 poles, 1,000 miles of wire down and 3,000 transmitters. It was a lot of work to restore that,' Kent said. The Public Service Commission is voting this month on whether or not to freeze the base rate for three years. Your rate is dependent on the plan you have. Georgia Power sent WSAV the following statement on the rate freeze: 'At Georgia Power, customers are at the center of everything we do. As costs around the country rise, Georgia Power remains committed to providing our customers with clean, safe, reliable, and affordable energy. We are well-positioned to balance mutual benefits that are available as a result of the extraordinary economic growth taking place in our state. This stipulated agreement helps balance the affordability needs of our customers while ensuring Georgia Power remains equipped to continue its support of our state's incredible growth – which is good for all of our stakeholders. We're always working to keep energy reliable and affordable for customers, and this stipulated agreement means no base rate increases for three years – that's great news for every customer. Reaching this agreement is just the start of an open and transparent process, leading up to a vote by the Georgia PSC, which will include opportunities for comment and input from intervenors and the public.'
