UAE cricketers high on ‘self-belief' after historic win over Bangladesh
22 May 2025 23:49
KUUMAR SHYAM (ABU DHABI)The UAE cricket team achieved a landmark triumph by securing their first-ever bilateral Twenty20 International (T20I) series win over Bangladesh, clinching the three-match series 2-1 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. In the decisive third T20I, UAE chased down Bangladesh's target of 163 for a commanding seven-wicket victory late on Wednesday night. Alishan Sharafu, displaying maturity beyond his 22 years, remained unbeaten on 68 runs off 47 balls, scoring five boundaries and three sixes. He was ably supported by Asif Khan, who contributed an aggressive 41 not out off 26 deliveries, featuring five sixes. Their unbroken 81-run partnership off 51 balls ensured UAE reached the target with five balls to spare. This is also a major highlight of the UAE's performances under Lalchand Rajput, who took over the reins as national team coach last year. The team's success reflects the progress of UAE cricket and its potential to challenge established cricketing nations, said Rajput in the post-match interaction as celebrations continued late into the night. UAE captain Muhammad Waseem was named Player of the Series for his consistent performances.'I think it's a great moment for UAE cricket and I think it's a changing phase,' Rajput said. 'This is the first stepping stone and I'm sure you will see many more of these because this victory will go a long way in changing the players' mindset.'The way we chased, the way Alishan and Lala [Asif Khan's nickname] played; that was fantastic. That's what we want because it is important not to leave the composure at any moment. We just wanted to bat deep and that partnership between Sharafu and Khan was important.'Partnerships were the grey area in the first match when the UAE put up a valiant fight in chasing a huge total after Parvaiz Hossain Emon scored a century. Interestingly, a third match was added as a late change between the two cricket boards. The UAE had won the second match in which Bangladesh opted to rest Emon for a groin niggle and experienced bowler Mustafizur Rahman leaving the squad to play in the Indian Premier League.Bangladesh did not get the start they wanted with Dhruv Parashar taking out the dangerman Emon and the top order collapsed. Left-arm spinner Haider Ali, who made his debut for the UAE with the first match, delivered a game-changing spell, claiming three wickets for just seven runs in his four overs. Pacers Matiullah Khan and Saghir Khan also made significant contributions, taking two wickets each. Rearguard action from Tanzid Hasan (40 runs) and Jaker Ali (41 runs) helped Bangladesh reach a respectable total of 162 for nine.
'Self-belief and mindset are the two important things when you compete at the highest level,' Rajput added. 'When you play against a Test playing country, yes, they are more mature because they play more cricket. But we are not that far behind. That's where confidence and self-belief is important and we showed that.'

KL Rahul eyes return to T20I side for 2026 World Cup
Rahul admits his time away has offered him a chance to reflect, reset, and recalibrate his white-ball game. 'I obviously had some time to think about my white-ball game, I was quite happy with my performances and where I was,' "Yes, I want to get back in the T20I team and the World Cup is in my mind, but for now it's just trying to enjoy how I'm playing right now," said the wicketkeeper-batter. Rahul has been a consistent performer in ODIs and believes the break from T20I cricket has helped him gain valuable perspective on how he should go ahead with his batting. He was in spectacular form in India's victorious 2025 Champions Trophy campaign earlier this year, scoring 140 runs in 5 matches, striking at a steady 97.90 as he played a crucial role in the middle order alongside Shreyas Iyer. 'So, overall, (I was) just sitting and thinking about where I can get better, where the game's gone and what I need to do to catch up with the game and what can I do to perform and get back in the T20I team, what can I do to become an important player for my team in ODI and T20I, overall in white-ball cricket.'

Nahayan hails ‘another glorious chapter' as UAE stun Bangladesh to make history
Sheikh Nahyan bin Mabarak Al Nahayan, Chairman of the Emirates Cricket Board, led the plaudits after the UAE Men's cricket team stunned Bangladesh in a memorable 2-1 series victory, calling it 'another glorious chapter in our cricketing history.' The series, played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, saw UAE bounce back after losing the opening match to defeat their more experienced opponents in the final two games. The decider on Wednesday night was won convincingly, as Haider Ali's spectacular 3 for 7 derailed the Bangladesh innings before Alishan Sharafu (68 not out) and Asif Khan (41 not out) sealed the chase with a composed, unbeaten 87-run stand. 'The Emirates Cricket Board is delighted with the outstanding performance of the UAE Men's team in the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh,' Sheikh Nahayan said. 'The team played brilliantly in the whole series while the support staff put in the hard yards to make the victory possible. 'I want to congratulate the entire squad and wish them the very best in their upcoming international assignments. The ECB will continue to provide the best possible facilities and exposure to our immensely talented players. UAE continues to impress in the T20I format and the Bangladesh series win is another glorious chapter in our cricketing history. 'In the recent past, the team has defeated formidable Test playing opponents like Afghanistan and New Zealand. The series win will give immense confidence and self-belief to our players and make them take on bigger and more established opponents.' The win underscores UAE's rapid rise in international cricket, especially in the T20 format, where they are increasingly competing with — and beating — Full Member nations. With this victory, the team has reaffirmed their credentials and sent a strong message to future opponents.
