CCSO announces new naloxone stand in West Ashley

Yahoo23-05-2025

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – West Ashley is home to a new naloxone stand after Charleston County reported a recent spike in overdoses.
The owner of Consign Charleston is partnering with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office to the stand at 1610 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard.
'We thank them for this partnership and willingness to help their community,' CCSO wrote in a social media post.
The overdose data comes from OD MAPS, which stands for Overdose Detection Mapping Application Program, the sheriff's office said.
The system provides suspected overdose data for different jurisdictions so officials can mobilize a response to areas experiencing overdose increases.
The new stand is part of a countywide initiative.

Vending machine in Newton County dispenses overdose reversal drug

A key tool in the fight against the deadly opioid epidemic is now available in a Newton County vending machine. The first naloxone vending machine installed at a Georgia law enforcement facility is at the Newton County Detention Center. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The county sheriff's office said people who need access to the machine can request a token from a Newton County Detention Center administrator, which allows them to get a naloxone kit. The machine also features a QR code with step-by-step instructions on how to administer the naloxone. 'By placing this machine inside our facility, we are bridging the gap between public safety and public health. We are proud to lead the way in Georgia.' The vending machine fills a critical need, the sheriff's office said. Georgia had 15,457 opioid overdose incidents requiring emergency response from 2024 to now, the Overdose Detection Mapping Application Program said. Newton County accounted for 173 of those incidents, or 1.12% of the state's total. The county's vending machine was made possible in partnership with GNR Public Health and was bought through support from the Georgia Department of Public Health's opioid program. The project is funded through a two-year, $196,800 grant from the Georgia Opioid Crisis Abatement Trust awarded to GNR Public Health. Part of this funding will stock the machine with naloxone kits. Charleston's new food truck offers 100% gluten-free menu

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – After 15 years of navigating her life with celiac disease, Renee Dilorenzo is opening a 100% gluten-free food truck called Gluten Free Gourmet Hub. After her celiac diagnosis, Dilorenzo was shocked by the lack of gluten-free options at the time. 'A lot of food tasted like cardboard,' she said. 'It wasn't very accessible, and it was very expensive. Being in a military family on a tight budget, I had to get creative,' Dilorenzo explains. Dilorenzo comes from an Italian family, and 'making my gluten-free pasta was one of the great motivations I had to start tweaking our favorite gluten-free recipes. That grew, and I started feeding family, friends, and it took off from there,' said Dilorenzo. That motivation led to her re-creating all her favorite dishes, gluten-free. Over time, she experimented with many ingredients to satisfy her taste buds and meet the safety needs of her allergy restrictions. On June 6, the Lowcountry can try her gluten-free dishes, such as pasta, pizza, onion rings, a chicken parmesan sandwich, and mac and cheese – all dishes that are typically hard to find on a gluten-free diet. Those who are interested can view her menu here. 'Working with gluten-free flours is a bit of a science experiment,' said Dilorenzo. 'It took me a while to figure out how many eggs I needed, how much water or olive oil to use. Gluten-free flour can be tricky,' she explains. All her recipes are made in a gluten-free environment. Dilrenzo claims that her plates are '100% gluten-free, and all of our food is created in a dedicated kitchen, so I have my own fryers, I have my own ovens, I have my own equipment, I have my own space. Right now, I'm working out of Mixon Kitchen.' Also, no gluten will enter to food truck, Dilozeno states. According to Dilozeno, she reads every food label and pays close attention to the ingredients that she buys from the stores because gluten can hide in products that are used often. 'After 15 years, I still pick up a product and read the label every time. Things change, and it's important to know exactly what we are putting on our bodies,' said Dilorenzo. The Gluten Free Gourmet Hub will be located at the following: June 6 at High Score Brewing Company from 5 to 8 p.m. June 7 at High Score Brewing Company from 2 to 8 p.m. June 14 at High Score Brewing Company from 2 to 7 p.m. June 15 Snafu Brewery from 12 to 5:30 p.m. June 20 at Summerville, 1317 N Main St., from 5 to 8 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
