USC women finish second to Georgia at NCAA outdoor track and field championships
EUGENE, Ore. — Buoyed by top performances in the hammer throw, high jump and 400 meters, the Georgia women's track and field squad distanced itself from the opposition and cruised to its first outdoor national championship in team history.
Georgia lapped the field with 73 points ahead of runners-up USC (47) and third place Texas A&M (43). Fourth-year Bulldogs coach Caryl Smith Gilbert also won national titles at USC in 2018 and 2021.
Olympic gold medalist Aaliyah Butler and Dejanea Oakley took the first two spots in the 400 meters with Butler posting a 49.26 and Oakley a 49.65. Butler's time was the fifth best all-time for a collegian and Oakley was eighth.
The Bulldogs expanded their lead when Elena Kulichenko won the high jump for the second straight year after tying for the title last year. The Odessa, Russia, native won with a jump of 6 feet, 5 inches.
Michelle Smith, a freshman, finished third in the 400 meter hurdles at 55.20 to clinch the team title. Skylynn Townsend took sixth in the triple jump at 44-4¼.
Georgia ended the night by finishing first in the 4x400-meter relay with Butler taking the lead in the final leg with a winning time of 3:23.62.
The Bulldogs entered Saturday competition in the lead with 26 points after Stephanie Ratcliffe won the hammer throw on Thursday with a nation-leading distance of 234 feet, 2 inches.
Washington and USC shared the lead earlier Saturday night after Washington's Sophie O'Sullivan won the 1,500 meters and USC's Samirah Moody won the 100, but Georgia got 18 points from Butler and Oakley and never looked back.
USC also won the 4x100-meter relay at 42.22.
Georgia also got points in the javelin with a second-place finish from freshman Manuela Rotundo and a fourth-place finish from Lianna Davidson. Senior Keslie Murrell-Ross finished sixth in the shot put.

Nico Porteous will not defend Olympic halfpipe title, will remain active in skiing
Nico Porteous, one of two New Zealand athletes to win a Winter Olympic gold medal, will not defend his ski halfpipe title from 2022 at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games as he focuses on other parts of his skiing career. 'I've loved representing New Zealand. Wearing the fern and competing for my country has been the most incredible experience and I'm so proud of what I've achieved,' Porteous, 23, said in press release. 'This wasn't an easy decision to make, but I'm excited to do something new, and I feel like the time is right for me to look for a new challenge and new opportunities.' Porteous plans to stay active in skiing through filming, product development and other competitions outside of the halfpipe, such as Natural Selection. 'I still love skiing, and I want to keep skiing to the best of my abilities and keep pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the sport,' he said. 'Ultimately, I'm ready for something new. What that looks like I'm not exactly sure, but over the past few seasons I've enjoyed filming and producing videos, as well as working on gear and product design.' In 2018, Porteous took halfpipe bronze in his Olympic debut, becoming at 16 the youngest skier to win an Olympic medal and the youngest New Zealand athlete to win a Winter or Summer Olympic medal. In 2022, he landed back-to-back double cork 1620s on his first of three runs in the Olympic final. His 93-point score held up to take gold over Americans David Wise and Alex Ferreira, who had gone one-two in 2018. Earlier in the 2022 Games, Zoi Sadowski-Synnott became the first New Zealand athlete to win a Winter Olympic gold medal, taking the women's snowboard slopestyle event. Porteous last competed at a September 2024 World Cup in New Zealand, placing 31st. He also won X Games Aspen titles in 2021 and 2022 and the World Championships in 2021, also in Aspen. Myers sparks offense as Marlins complete a three-game sweep on the road against the Nationals
Dane Myers had three hits, including a home run, as the visiting Miami Marlins beat the Washington Nationals 3-1 on Sunday to complete the three-game sweep. Nick Fortes added three hits for Miami, which completed its first three-game sweep of the season and won three in row overall for the first time since April 20-22. Marlins starter Eury Perez, in his second start since his return from Tommy John surgery, gave up one run on four hits with three walks and no strikeouts. Lake Bachar (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings, and Freddy Tarnok worked the ninth for his first save. Washington went 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position as its offensive struggles continued. The Nationals have lost eight straight and 11 of 13 and are a season-worst 11 games under .500. Washington starter MacKenzie Gore (3-6) allowed two runs on eight hits over six innings.
