PSP regrets recent events on Syrian Coast: Attempt by remnants of former regime to take revenge

National News08-03-2025

NNA - The Progressive Socialist Party, on Saturday, expressed its regret in a statement, "for the events taking place in the Syrian coastal region, which fall within the framework of foreign attempts to target Syria's security and undermine its internal peace, posing a threat to the security of the entire region."
It stressed "the need for awareness and avoiding the many traps that the remnants of the former regime are trying to set to take revenge for the success of the new administration in overthrowing it."
The party, thus, called for "calm and resorting to the law," stressing "the necessity of supporting the process of rebuilding the new Syrian state and forming its army and security forces, which are the only guarantors of the safety of the brotherly Syrian people of all stripes."

Salam: Restoring sovereignty, trust key to Lebanon's recovery

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said in an address he delivered at a conference titled, 'Rebuilding Lebanon: Investment Framework and Business Opportunities' that Lebanon's financial collapse stems from poor governance and impunity, and stressed that the country faces immense challenges. Salam noted that Israeli attacks devastated infrastructure and disrupted lives, yet the Lebanese people and businesses remained resilient. 'It is time to rebuild the state—this is a core mission of my government,' Salam added, outlining key pillars: restoring sovereignty, securing borders, and stabilizing the country. Moreover, the PM announced enhanced control over all entry and exit points, particularly Beirut's airport, and revealed plans to reopen Qlayaat Airport. He further confirmed the disarmament of over 500 weapons depots in the south and heightened security at Beirut Airport. Emphasizing transparency, Salam cited progress on depositors' rights, judicial independence, and upcoming legislation for AI governance. The PM also reaffirmed Lebanon's commitment to the safe return of Syrian refugees and rebuilding cultural and sports institutions.

Lebanon may propose that US envoy mediate to halt Israeli escalation, resolve disputes

by Naharnet Newsdesk 08 June 2025, 11:03 Officials close to President Joseph Aoun have floated the idea that a U.S. envoy carry out continuous negotiations between Lebanon and Israel to halt the Israeli escalation and try and find solutions for the disputed border points and the captives file, Kuwait's al-Anbaa newspaper has reported. 'They are relying on the fact that U.S. envoy to Syria Tom Barrack, who is of Lebanese origins, can carry out this mission in light of his closeness to U.S. Presiden Donald Trump and his preliminary success in the Syrian file until now, and also because he greatly understands the Lebanese situation and the Lebanese thinking,' al-Anbaa said. 'What's important is for Tel Aviv to accept such a proposal, seeing as it is reiterating its stance on the need to disarm Hezbollah north of the Litani River … while accusing Hezbollah of rebuilding its military arsenal through manufacturing drones,' al-Anbaa added.

Mr. Aoun: Time is of the Essence

By : Ya Libnan Editoria Board Instead of disarming and handing over its weapons to the Lebanese army, Hezbollah is busy rearming itself after its humiliating defeat by Israel. Just yesterday, Syrian security forces in the border city of Qusayr foiled an attempt to smuggle an arms shipment into Lebanon, according to the Syrian interior ministry. Qusayr was the base from which Hezbollah launched attacks against the Syrian opposition, fighting to support the now-deposed Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, who was overthrown last December by the HTS rebels. It appears Hezbollah still maintains underground warehouses filled with heavy weapons. On the eve of Eid al-Adha, Israel bombed Hezbollah's underground drone factories . These developments underscore the disturbing reality that neither Israel nor Hezbollah truly cares about Lebanon's wellbeing. This is a recipe for disaster as Lebanon enters its crucial summer tourism season. Who in their right mind would visit Lebanon if Hezbollah is building drones practically next to Beirut airport? President Aoun has been dealing with Hezbollah diplomatically, using kid gloves to handle the organization. But it's obvious that Hezbollah is taking advantage of President Aoun's good character, rearming behind his back. Even more troubling is the fact that Hezbollah is not acting independently but is, in fact, a proxy of Iran. Its primary loyalty lies with Tehran's agenda, not with the Lebanese people. Hezbollah's actions are dictated by Iran's strategic calculations—using Lebanon as a bargaining chip in its negotiations with the United States. Hezbollah's only goal is to strengthen Iran's position at the negotiating table, even if that means dragging Lebanon into conflict and chaos. Hezbollah doesn't give a damn about Lebanon. Its weapons are not for the defense of Lebanese citizens but for the advancement of Iran's regional ambitions. Lebanon has become a hostage to Hezbollah's regional games, and the Lebanese people are paying the price. Mr. President, it's time to be bold. Disarm Hezbollah now, before it's too late. The fate of Lebanon—and the lives and livelihoods of its people—depend on it.
