Emma Barnett: ‘People ask, is that the radio you or the real you?'

The Guardian22-03-2025

At school, I was the girl who wanted to dissect sheep lungs. I had a lack of horror around gore, I'm not squeamish at all, which was helpful when it came to all those needles for IVF. I thought about being a surgeon. I also thought it would be interesting to become a fishmonger. I'm fascinated by fish – I don't know why.
As an only child, radio was my companion. I had a little battery-operated radio at the table next to my cereal bowl.
I broadly exist on six hours sleep. After Today, I've got about half an hour of chat left in me before I need to be silent.
The goal in every interview, the absolute dream, is fresh snow. You're walking somewhere no one has gone before.
I wasn't a rude child, but I was certainly inquisitive. I have a curiosity. Sometimes, in conversation, people say, is that the radio you or the real you? Radio me is me.
I routinely work through bone-grinding pain. Work is my salvation from endometriosis. It fills my brain.
Being a parent teaches you how to not be the main character in your own life, to play a different role in your own existence. When you're forced to learn that, you're also forced to relearn what made your life enjoyable before, and how to access that.
I was left with two kids when my husband returned to work. I decided to survive the week by writing down everything I felt – a portrait of maternity leave. I hadn't expected to have a daughter and thought it would be a great map for her should she ever go down this road.
On radio, you need to think of someone to talk to, so I think of my Auntie Jean, always a crafty fag on the go, on the white wine by 6pm, maybe a champagne cocktail depending on the night. I thought of her the first time I did Question Time, the first time I did Woman's Hour and the first time I stepped out seven months ago and did Today. She meant so much to me, and that has helped me in moments of doing something new.
There are parallels between maternity leave and lockdown: only being able to get out once a day to your local park, knowing your area better than you ever have before, there being limited things you can do, wondering who you are, having an existential crisis.
The thing I find hard is toggling between work and parenting. The jaggedness comes in the gear changes between my different roles. It's almost like relearning a dance step every time.
Remember that those who matter don't mind and those who do mind don't matter. I have a job where I can get judged on a moment in time, and it amazes me how judgments can be formed without the full picture – but that's the world we're living in. You've got to back facts, you've got to back yourself, you've got to have people around you that you trust.

Former Biden White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre says she is leaving the Democratic party

WASHINGTON — Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, a prominent fixture in Democratic politics and the face of the Biden administration for years, is leaving the party and registering as an independent, according to a press release about her upcoming book. Jean-Pierre "didn't come to her decision to be an Independent lightly," said the release from the book's publisher, Hachette. In her book, "Independent: A look inside a broken White House, outside the party lines," Jean-Pierre "shares why Americans must step beyond party lines to embrace life as Independents," the release added. The book is set to be released in October. Jean-Pierre's decision comes as the Democrats have grappled with losing the White House and both chambers of Congress in November. A recent book from CNN's Jake Tapper and Axios' Alex Thompson on Biden's 2024 run added fodder to criticisms about the former president's decision to seek re-election despite concerns about his age and health. The description of Jean-Pierre's book jabs at the Democratic Party's decisions during the summer of 2024, including 'the betrayal by the Democratic Party that led to' Biden's decision to drop out of the presidential race. 'Until January 20, I was responsible for speaking on behalf of the President of the United States. At noon on that day, I became a private citizen who, like all Americans and many of our allies around the world, had to contend with what was to come next for our country,' Jean-Pierre said in a statement for Legacy Lit, which is part of Hatchette. 'I determined that the danger we face as a country requires freeing ourselves of boxes.' A spokesperson for the Democratic National Committee declined to comment on Jean-Pierre leaving the party. A spokesperson for Biden's personal office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Biden named Jean-Pierre press secretary in 2022 after former press secretary Jen Psaki left the White House to anchor an MSNBC show. Jean-Pierre served as the top White House spokesperson through the remainder of Biden's term. She was the first Black woman and first openly gay person to serve as White House press secretary. Jean-Pierre has a long history of working for top Democrats. Prior to her stint in the Biden White House, Jean-Pierre was the chief of staff to then-vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris. She also worked for former President Barack Obama during his presidential campaigns. Jean-Pierre said in a video posted to Instagram that she decided to 'follow my own compass,' urging people to 'stop thinking in boxes' and 'not be so partisan.'

The couple got engaged in December after over a year of dating and although they haven't yet set a date for their nuptials, the 37-year-old groom-to-be admitted he's already invited his friend and collaborator, who he has previously worked with on the likes of 'Shape of You', 'Castle on the Hill', and Justin Bieber's 'Love Yourself'. ‌ Speaking on the Australian TV show 'Today', Benny said: "I just told him, 'I'm going to have a wedding and you're going to come to the wedding. ‌ "Eventually Ed will come to our wedding when we do have one, but unfortunately we have not scheduled one yet - but we will!" After Benny and Selena got engaged, they created songs that eventually ended up on their first joint album, 'I Said I Love You First', which was released in March, but they had never deliberately planned to make such a project together. Speaking about how their LP came to fruition, Benny said: "We just started making music in our house as a little fun activity and then all of a sudden we had one song, then two songs, then three songs, then four songs. During the recording process, a bird caused Benny and Selena to fight. Speaking to Kent 'Smallzy' Small on the latest episode of the 'Smallzy's Surgery' podcast, he said: "The biggest fight we had making the record is we did it at home, and there were birds that would chirp only when she was recording and never any time else. ‌ "And I didn't believe her for the first two weeks." Selena recently revealed she does not like to refer to Benny as her fiance. Appearing with her partner on the 'Table Manners' podcast in April, the 32-year-old singer explained: "[Calling him my fiance is] so strange. ‌ "I just say, my partner or Benny. But the other day, I caught myself saying 'Well, my boyfriend ...' but that's not quite why we're there." And after he and Selena shared their first kiss, Benny knew he wanted to "have a baby" with his lover. Appearing on Spotify's 'Countdown To' series in March, he said: "I knew right after we kissed, I was like, 'Oh wow. I'm probably going to marry this person'. EastEnders attack in early iPlayer release as legend stages return

This article contains spoilers for tonight's episode of EastEnders, which airs on BBC One at 7.30pm or can be streamed now on iPlayer. Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) has made a grand return to Albert Square – and she's not happy with cousin Kat (Jessie Wallace). As viewers of the soap know, Jean fled the area last month in the wake of her break-up with Harvey Monroe (Ross Boatman). His affair with Kathy Cotton (Gillian Taylforth) had been publicly exposed in front of the Queen Vic punters, leaving poor Jean humiliated. This was just hours after she proposed to him. Realising that there was now too much water under the bridge, she decided to take a break with Big Mo (Laila Morse). During their absence, Harvey wriggled his way back into the family dynamic – even if Kat tried to prevent it. She was furious to be conned into a new business venture with him, running a limousine hire. With the vehicle in both of their names, they had no option but to proceed with their idea. Her long-term partner and ex-husband Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) suggested staging a wedding photoshoot, but the idea clearly gave him food for thought. After consulting Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) for some advice, he got down on one knee and popped the question to Kat. She was more than happy to accept, and they came up with a brilliant idea to get Harvey and Kathy to pay for half of their celebrations – given the photos would be used to publicise the limo. There was one big issue though. Jean was still in the dark about the business deal, and was still in an awful mood. Kat dodged around the subject, but with this being EastEnders, it wasn't long for everything to be exposed. As Kat and Alfie raised a glass to their engagement in the pub with Harvey and Kathy, Kim Fox (Tameka Empson) began to plan their joint stag and hen do. Linda popped the champers, just as Jean strolled in the door. She wrongly assumed that the residents were staging a welcome home party, and was shocked to learn the truth. More Trending She was hurt that Kat hadn't told her about Alfie's proposal, and more so that Harvey knew before her. When she found out about the limousine, the floor dropped from beneath her feet. Jean dealt a vicious slap to Kat, before disowning her from the Slater family. View More » Will the women ever see eye to eye again?
