Due to rising threats of food insecurity and economic instability in African countries, aquaculture, if handled appropriately, is emerging as one of the promising solutions to these issues.
With rising demand for seafood and growing pressure on wild fish stocks, fish farming is becoming an essential pillar of food production and livelihood support.
However, its prospects face challenges such as poor water quality, habitat degradation, and other environmental stressors.
Abiola Obafemi, an Environmental and Fisheries Scientist, is working to use scientific research to develop further understanding facing fisheries resources. Using innovative studies, Abiola investigates how environmental stressors affect both finfish and shell fisheries and proposes ways to improve the resilience of fisheries resources in Africa and beyond.
Having conducted research in the Gulf of Guinea, Lagos, and the Gulf of Mexico, North America, Abiola brings an extensive approach to addressing aquaculture and fisheries issues.
'Water quality plays a vital role in the success or failure of fish farming and fisheries operations,' Abiola says. Poor water quality poses a substantial risk to the health of aquatic species, which in turn threatens food security and jobs of the communities that rely on them.
Aquatic habitats, which cover more than two-thirds of the Earth's surface, are the most biologically diverse ecosystems. Yet they are also among the most threatened due to pollution, overfishing, and extreme environmental stressors caused by the changing climate.
Abiola combines laboratory experiments and field monitoring to study how water quality factors like temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen impact aquaculture productivity. His work provides insight into how water quality impacts fisheries resources and contributes to their sustainability.
In Nigeria, aquaculture has the potential to boost national food production. His work is critical. His insights support efforts addressing Africa's ecological challenges and food insecurity issues.
By collaborating with researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders, Abiola has proven to be an integral part of the scientists who seek to conserve natural resources in Africa and globally.

MOSCOW, RUSSIA - Media OutReach Newswire - 6 June 2025 - SIBUR, Russia's largest producer of polymers and rubbers, has successfully concluded its five-year sustainability strategy and presented new targets for the next five-year period, 2025–2029. By 2030, the company aims to recycle at least 600,000 tonnes of plastic waste through its own and partner initiatives, including through the expansion of contract manufacturing for processing various types of plastics. In 2024, SIBUR recycled 111,000 tonnes of polymer waste, surpassing its target of 100,000 tonnes per year. Over the next five years, SIBUR plans to increase its annual output of sustainable products – those made with lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or that incorporate recycled or bio-based feedstock – to 400,000 tonnes. For comparison, the company produced 287,000 tonnes of such products in 2024. "Polymers are becoming an essential element in the global energy transition and green economy; their role in reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency is only growing," said Nadezhda Galaktionova, Head of Sustainability and Climate Solutions at SIBUR. "That's why we were the first company in Russia to make increasing revenue from sustainable product sales a specific financial target in our ESG strategy." Another ambitious goal set by SIBUR for 2025–2029 is the development, implementation and scaling of chemical recycling technologies for mixed plastics (thermolysis). This innovative approach aims to significantly improve plastic waste management in Russia. In the next five years, SIBUR intends to achieve carbon neutrality at two more facilities through improved energy efficiency, purchases of green electricity, and the allocation of carbon units. Under the previous strategy, the company's SIBUR-PETF plant in the Tver region became Russia's first carbon-neutral production site. By 2030, SIBUR also plans to reduce its GHG emissions per tonne of product by 10% compared with 2024 levels and to support at least two nature-based climate projects. Under the previous strategy, the company verified over 3 million carbon units from climate projects at its facilities and planted more than 5 million trees. The new strategy also targets a 10% reduction in water consumption for operational needs. By 2030, SIBUR aims to increase the percentage of women in engineering and production roles at the company to at least 30% and to provide additional support for working mothers. Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change on Tuesday launched the National Biodiversity Database of the State of Qatar through an interactive electronic platform to document and classify terrestrial and marine organisms. The launch coincides with World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5. The platform aims to create accurate maps of natural habitats and the spatial and temporal distribution of species, providing a reliable scientific reference that supports decision-makers, researchers, and relevant authorities in preparing national reports and formulating environmental policies based on precise and sustainable scientific data. In this context, Minister of Environment and Climate Change HE Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie affirmed that the launch of the database is a strategic milestone in Qatar's environmental path and reflects the country's commitment to environmental governance and sustainable development. The Minister pointed out that having a comprehensive and reliable national database is a strategic necessity and a key tool for monitoring environmental changes, policy formulation, and decision-making. It also plays a role in enhancing Qatar's standing in international environmental indices by providing accurate data to global organizations, he added. The Minister explained that the database aligns with the aspirations of Qatar National Vision 2030 and translates the directions of the Third National Development Strategy 2024-2030 toward green transformation and enhanced environmental security, particularly in addressing the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss. The launch ceremony witnessed the signing of a 'Principal User Document' with several governmental and academic entities, including the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Environmental Science Center at Qatar University, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, University of Doha for Science and Technology, Qatar National Library, and the Friends of the Environment Center. This step aims to promote effective institutional use of environmental data. For his part, Undersecretary of the Ministry HE Eng. Abdulaziz bin Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud said that the new platform is an advanced model in environmental knowledge management, enabling accurate assessment of biodiversity, with a focus on both threatened and non-threatened species and environmentally sensitive sites, through scientifically supported descriptions with maps and illustrative images. He also noted that, as a party to international biodiversity agreements, Qatar regularly conducts comprehensive environmental surveys, and the new platform will enhance the quality of these reports and facilitate environmental reporting. Meanwhile, Assistant Undersecretary for Natural Reserves Affairs at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Dr. Ibrahim Abdul Latif Al Muslimani emphasized that the database marks a qualitative leap in unifying environmental data and supporting the sustainable use of biological resources, while also encouraging community and expert engagement in environmental conservation efforts. Director of the Wildlife Development Department at the Ministry Youssef Ibrahim Al Hamar said that the database serves as a comprehensive reference that enables users to conduct seamless searches and access accurate data.
