Cambodia, Thailand close more border crossings amid dispute
PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Sunday that two more border crossings with Thailand were completely shut down amid an ongoing border dispute between the two ASEAN member states, Xinhua reported.
Hun Manet said the Thai army Saturday night informed the governor of Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey province about its unilateral decision to close Choub Korki border checkpoint from Sunday onwards.
'I agreed with the governor's response that we will also close that border checkpoint permanently,' Hun Manet said in a post on his official social media platforms.
'I also ordered the governor to inform the Thai side that Cambodia has also decided to close another checkpoint at Choam, altogether with Choub Korki checkpoint from today onwards,' he added.
The Thai army has announced the closure of the trade point at Chong Sai Taku in Buriram province, effective from Saturday.
In a statement on Sunday, the Thai army said that it has implemented control measures for opening and closing all types of crossing points along the Thai-Cambodian border to comply with the security situation.
Thai media reported on Sunday that the Thai army prepared to close two more crossing points in response to the Cambodian side's announcement to close two border crossings.
In a statement, the ministry called on Thai nationals currently in Cambodia to exercise increased caution, avoid protest sites or high-risk areas, and closely follow the developments through official channels.

The nations have been at loggerheads since a Cambodian soldier was killed last month as troops exchanged fire in a disputed area known as the Emerald Triangle, where the borders of both countries and Laos meet. 'Starting from midnight tonight, all fuel and gas imports from Thailand will be halted,' Cambodian leader Hun Manet wrote on social media. He said energy companies would be able to 'import sufficiently from other sources to meet domestic fuel and gas demands' in the country. Thailand has placed restrictions on several border checkpoints citing 'national security', and today Cambodia closed two crossings in retaliation. In statements issued today, Cambodia's foreign ministry urged citizens not to travel to Thailand unnecessarily, while Thailand's consular affairs department warned Thais in Cambodia to avoid 'protest areas'. The border spat has triggered political turmoil in Thailand after a phone call between leaders was leaked, prompting domestic criticism of Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's conduct. The ruling Thai party's biggest coalition partner withdrew earlier this week as calls grew louder for her to step down and she was forced to apologise over her phone conversation with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen. Thailand was Cambodia's third-biggest trading partner in 2022, according to the World Bank, with imports reaching US$3.8 billion, of which fuels accounted for 27%. Earlier today, Cambodia's defence ministry accused the Thai army of violating an agreement by escorting some 150 cyclists to visit a disputed temple near the border. The Thai army denied any violation, saying there had been a 'misunderstanding'.

PM: Embrace diversity as a strength, not a source of division
KUCHING: Racial diversity should be embraced as a strength to enhance national unity, rather than as a battleground for rivalry or a means to showcase superiority and ego, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He said that in many other countries, such diversity has led to racial and religious hostility, eventually burdening the nation and negatively affecting the people. "Unity within our multiracial society is increasingly essential to ensure that Malaysia remains strong amid the current uncertain global geopolitical landscape. "Never underestimate the potential problems if you are disunited. "The geopolitical conditions are so challenging and alarming. "The future is never certain. But what we can ensure is a united Malaysia," he said. Anwar was speaking at the 2025 Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak celebration dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here on Sunday night, which was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Anwar said as prime minister, he feels proud in showcasing the country's cultural and racial diversity, especially as Malaysia assumes the Asean chairmanship this year and when receiving foreign dignitaries and corporate leaders. He said this was exemplified during a recent meeting with ConocoPhillips chairman and chief executive officer Ryan Lance, where he wore a traditional Iban outfit gifted to him earlier by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. "So I told him (Ryan) about Sarawak, about the beauty of the culture, that's what we have to do. "And I take great pride as a Malaysian to speak to one of the great multi-billion dollar companies, probably one of the biggest oil companies in the world and number one in the United States," he said. Meanwhile, Anwar also announced that he will meet with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto this Friday to discuss a proposal for Sarawak to be positioned as a hub for the Asean Power Grid (APG). He said Sarawak, with its strengths in hydroelectric, gas and hydrogen energy, has the potential to spearhead the APG, not only by linking to Sabah and Indonesia's Kalimantan, but also extending to the southern Philippines.
