Opinion polls show support for Japan PM Ishiba recovering before election

Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is looking to show progress in talks with the US over tariffs. -- PHOTO: REUTERS TOKYO (Bloomberg): Public support for Japan's prime minister is holding up after the government moved to address high rice prices, according to new opinion polls, a positive sign for Shigeru Ishiba as he heads into an election and tries to reach a trade agreement with the US. A survey conducted over the weekend by Kyodo News showed the approval rating for Ishiba's cabinet at 37.0%, up from 31.7% in a survey in May. A separate poll by the Asahi newspaper showed support at 32%, little changed from 33% in a May survey. High rice prices are one of the biggest concerns for voters going into an upper house election in July. Ishiba's administration has released some government stockpiles of rice and set up a minister-level meeting to address the supply of the staple food. While the government's efforts on rice appears to have helped Ishiba, last week's moves to address the rising cost-of-living with cash handouts were less well received. The same Kyodo survey showed 54.9% were against the ruling party's promise to hand out ¥20,000 ($138) per person, while 67% of respondents to the Asahi poll said they didn't approve of the move. Ishiba is also looking to show progress in talks with the US over tariffs, particularly on Japanese auto exports, a critical engine for the economy. So far, repeated conversations between officials on both sides have shown little tangible progress. Ishiba should have a chance to talk to US President Donald Trump at the Group of Seven summit meeting in Canada that started this weekend. The two leaders held a phone call on Friday, after which Ishiba said they agreed to accelerate talks. - ©2025 Bloomberg L.P.

Dark web drug market busted by European and U.S. authorities

FILE PHOTO: General view of the Europol building in The Hague, Netherlands December 12, 2019. REUTERS/Eva Plevier/ File Photo BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Police across Europe have dismantled a dark web drug marketplace known as 'Archetyp Market', the pan-European Europol police body said on Monday, which added that U.S. authorities had also assisted them in the operation. Europol said police operations took place last week across Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain and Sweden to dismantle the dark web Archetyp Market. It added that the platform's infrastructure in the Netherlands was taken offline and that a 30-year-old German who was the administrator had been arrested in Barcelona. Europol said Archetyp had been one of the few darknet markets that allowed the sale of fentanyl and other highly potent synthetic opioids. "With this takedown, law enforcement has taken out one of the dark web's longest-running drug markets, cutting off a major supply line for some of the world's most dangerous substances," said Jean-Philippe Lecouffe, deputy executive director of operations at Europol. "By dismantling its infrastructure and arresting its key players, we are sending a clear message: there is no safe haven for those who profit from harm," added Lecouffe. IAEA Head Warns Israel-Iran Tensions Increase Risk of Nuclear Radiation Leaks

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi looks on, on the day of an exceptional meeting of the agency's Board of Governors to discuss Israel's s strike on Iran that have hit nuclear targets including the Natanz nuclear complex, at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria, June 16, 2025. REUTERS/Elisabeth Mandl ATHENS, June 16 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- The military tension between Israel and Iran increases the risk of nuclear radiation leaks and delays efforts to prevent the possession of nuclear weapons, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warned on Monday. Delivering an introductory statement at the agency's urgent session on the Israel-Iran conflict, Rafael Grossi informed the Board of Governors: 'There has been no additional damage at the Natanz Fuel Enrichment Plant site since the Friday attack by Israel,' Anadolu Ajansi reported. He said the level of radioactivity outside the Natanz site has remained unchanged and is at normal levels. bootstrap slideshow Grossi confirmed the presence of radiological and chemical contamination within the Natanz facility. However, this risk can be effectively managed with appropriate protective measures, he remarked. 'No damage has been seen at the site of the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant or at the Khondab heavy water reactor, which is under construction. The Bushehr nuclear power plant has not been targeted or affected by the recent attacks, and neither has the Tehran Research Reactor. 'At the Esfahan nuclear site, four buildings were damaged in Friday's attack: the central chemical laboratory, a uranium conversion plant, the Tehran reactor fuel manufacturing plant, and the UF4 to EU metal processing facility, which was under construction,' he further added. Noting that he remains in touch with the agency's inspectors on the ground, Grossi asserted that he is ready to travel immediately and engage with all concerned parties 'to help ensure the protection of nuclear facilities and the continued peaceful use of nuclear technology.' 'Military escalation threatens lives, increases the chance of a radiological release with serious consequences for people and the environment, and delays indispensable work towards a diplomatic solution for the long-term assurance that Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon,' he said.
