Android Automotive now lets apps show your food order status and more on your car's home screen

When you're driving, your focus should be on the road, but sometimes you need to glance at your car's infotainment screen for an alert. Google's operating system for car infotainment screens, Android Automotive OS, already provides numerous ways to quickly catch up on alerts and will soon add another in the form of app cards on the home screen.
In the new version of Android Automotive, the home screen features a large, dedicated card for Google Maps and a smaller media player card between the status and navigation bars. Past releases also included a dedicated card for showing the weather at the current location. Until now, these home screen cards were provided by the OS, with no way for app developers to add their own. This approach keeps the home screen clean and consistent, allowing drivers to quickly view key information without futzing with the UI. The downside, however, is that drivers have to open individual apps to get updates on information not available on the home screen, like the status of a takeout food order.

To solve this, Google is introducing a new feature called AppCard. An AppCard 'displays an app's most relevant data and functionality to users in a way that is accessible and always available.' It's a 'grouping of UI elements' whose styling is controlled by car makers, so apps only provide the information, not the design. Apps can provide elements like an image with text, a tappable button, or a progress bar, but developers should be aware that space constraints will limit how much can be shown on the card.

Beyond that, there don't appear to be any restrictions on what apps can put in AppCards. Google envisions developers using the feature to do things like 'display the status of a takeout food order,' 'show photos to passengers,' or 'track and periodically update the price of crypto coins,' but there's seemingly no explicit rule against showing other information. Google could later enforce restrictions on this feature via Play Store policies, but whether that will happen remains to be seen.
It's unclear if AppCards will be exclusive to the new version of Android Automotive based on Android 16. However, there's evidence suggesting they won't be, as Google lists the feature under its 'unbundled apps' documentation. Unbundled apps are decoupled from the main Android Automotive OS and can be updated independently, much like the automotive app host, car UI library, and dashcam app. While car makers will still likely need to push out an update to support the feature, that update may not need to be based on Android 16.
It will be interesting to see how developers adopt this feature, especially as Google makes more apps available on cars running Android Automotive. This is precisely the kind of functionality that could help an app achieve a 'car differentiated' status — a higher tier of optimization beyond simply being 'car ready.' Given the extra time and care required, few apps fall into that higher category right now. However, providing a straightforward way to show custom information on the home screen might be the incentive needed to encourage more developers to take the plunge and fully optimize their apps for the car.

In Brief Intel will begin a new round of layoffs next month. The semiconductor giant plans to layoff at least 15%, and up to 20%, of workers in its Intel Foundry division starting in July, according to an internal memo originally reported on by The Oregonian. Intel Foundry designs, manufactures, and packages semiconductors for external clients. It's unclear how many workers this will directly impact. Intel's total workforce was 108,900 people as of December 2024, according to the company's annual regulatory filing. TechCrunch reached out to Intel for more information. This news is not a particular shock. Since Intel's CEO Lip-Bu Tan took the helm in March, he's made multiple references that the company needed to refocus on its core business units, flatten its organization structure and return to being an engineering-first company. Rumors of these specific layoffs began swirling in April. Tan also told Intel's customers it would spin off its noncore units at the company's Intel Vision conference in March. Intel previously laid off 15% of its staff, around 15,000 employees, last August.

AeroTEC teams with Pratt & Whitney to work on hybrid-electric plane in Moses Lake

(RTX Illustration) Seattle-based AeroTEC says it's been selected by Pratt & Whitney Canada to lead the modification and flight test of an experimental hybrid-electric demonstrator aircraft at its Flight Test Center in Moses Lake, Wash. The RTX demonstrator is a De Havilland Canada Dash 8-100 aircraft that will be modified to use a thermal engine built by Pratt & Whitney Canada and a 1-megawatt electric motor developed by Collins Aerospace. Both Pratt & Whitney and Collins are RTX businesses. Pratt & Whitney and its partners have also developed a mobile charging unit for the plane. The 200-kilowatt-hour batteries will be supplied by H55, a Swiss spin-off from the Solar Impulse venture that successfully sent a solar-powered airplane around the world in 2015-2016. H55 is supported by RTX Ventures, the venture capital arm of RTX. The RTX hybrid-electric demonstrator program is targeting up to 30% improved fuel efficiency compared to today's regional turboprops. In-flight demonstrations could help open the way for the propulsion system to be used on multiple platforms in the future. This week's announcement of AeroTEC's involvement came in conjunction with the Paris Air Show, where Pratt & Whitney announced that it tested the integrated propulsion system and batteries to full power on the ground in Quebec. AeroTEC said modification design will be supported by engineers at its Seattle headquarters, while all flight tests and modifications will take place in Moses Lake. 'AeroTEC's mission is to accelerate the evolution of aerospace, and our collaboration with Pratt & Whitney Canada on the RTX Hybrid-Electric Flight Demonstrator project is a clear example of that commitment,' AeroTEC President Justin Morigeau said in a news release. 'In our role leading the modification and flight testing of the experimental aircraft, we're proud to support the demonstration of cutting-edge technologies that will define the future of sustainable flight.' AeroTEC has been involved in similar aircraft conversion projects over the years. In 2020, it helped Everett, Wash.-based magniX put an all-electric Cessna Grand Caravan airplane through its paces. Another collaboration with magniX led to the test flight of a hydrogen-powered De Havilland Dash 8-300 for Universal Hydrogen in 2023. AeroTEC also supported the flight test of Eviation's all-electric plane in 2022. All those flight tests took place in Moses Lake. AeroTEC is currently working with magniX on a NASA-funded project to turn a 40-year-old De Havilland Dash 7 turboprop into a hybrid-electric demonstrator aircraft.

Elon Musk's X sues New York to block content moderation law

Elon Musk's X Corp sued New York on Tuesday, challenging the constitutionality of a state law requiring social media companies to disclose how they monitor hate speech, extremism, disinformation, harassment and foreign political interference. In a complaint filed in Manhattan federal court, X said New York's law subjects it to lawsuits and potentially large fines unless it discloses 'highly sensitive and controversial speech' that the First Amendment protects and the state may dislike. X said New York's law was based on a nearly identical California law whose enforcement was partially blocked by a federal appeals court last September because of free speech concerns. The lawsuit quoted a letter from two legislators who sponsored the law, which said X and Musk in particular had a 'disturbing record' on content moderation 'that threatens the foundations of our democracy.' New York Attorney General Letitia James, who enforces the state's laws, is the named defendant in X's lawsuit. Her office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
