Timepieces for a sporty lifestyle, from Rolex, Omega and Richard Mille
It is a truism that most diver's watches are far more likely to see the inside of a corporate boardroom than the deck of a schooner, let alone any inky ocean depths. Nonetheless, for those who want a timepiece that's as rugged as it is stylish, an impressive range of innovative sports watches saw the light of day this year.
In particular, it was a bumper year for fans of maritime horology, with a focus on covetable diver's watches. Chief among the anticipated releases was the Tudor Black Bay 58 GMT, an amalgam of two previous models, combining GMT functionality with the slimline, 39mm size of 2018's Black Bay 58. A more futuristic take on the diver's watch comes in the form of the Panerai Submersible Elux LAB-ID. It uses Elux, a luminescent material invented by the Italian manufacturer in the 1960s that can convert mechanical power to electricity to offer 30 minutes of juice to the indices, without employing any electronics. For a stylish reimagining of the category, look no further than the Ming 37.09 Bluefin. Taking its inspiration from the Malaysian brand's sleek, minimalist 37 collection, it packs 600 metres of water resistance into a compact 38mm case that's just 12.8mm thick, with the dive timer located on the dial rather than the bezel. Arguably the most radical take on the dive watch, though, comes in a decision to make it in the most traditional of watchmaking materials: gold. An imposing chunk of submersible bling, the Rolex Deepsea in gold weighs in at a hefty 300-plus grams, chunky enough to withstand pressures down to an almost-unheard-of 4,000 metres. The Omega Speedmaster First Omega in Space is a tribute to another fabled foray into the unknown – the space race – in the shape of a revisited design of the Reference CK 2998 from 1959. The piece oozes vintage flair without losing its tool watch touches – the durable aluminium bezel is paired with a lustrous dial, with contrasting and matching alpha hands and applied indices for legibility. Most notably, Omega finds a way to have its scratch-resistant sapphire case take on the taper found on its hesalite crystal.

7 timepiece moments from March and April 2025: Watches & Wonders, the effects of Trump's tariffs, and a bevy of new releases to get excited about
This March and April, the world once again descended on Geneva for the year's biggest watch fair, Watches and Wonders. But hanging over the fair were US President Donald Trump's tariffs on the Swiss watchmaking industry, and brands seem increasingly likely to price up their watches as a result. Nevertheless, we were cheered to spot several stars wearing Rolexes on television recently, or grail watches off screen; Breitling added another aviation-themed vintage brand to its expanding catalogue; and Philips in Association with Bacs & Russo are putting several beautiful clocks up for auction. 1. Photo: EPA-EFE Advertisement The biggest event on the high horology calendar landed at Palexpo in Geneva during the first week of April, and the Style team was on the ground to take a closer look at all the new releases. Sixty brands showcased their novelties in stunning booths to over 55,000 attendees. This year's edition was also arguably one of the most star-studded yet, as Kim Woo-bin visited Jaeger-LeCoultre, Jay Chou visited Tudor, Eileen Gu and Simone Ashley visited IWC Schaffhausen, Gianna Jun visited Piaget and Kylian Mbappe visited Hublot along with Usain Bolt, just to name a few. Rolex officially unveiled its first five-hertz movement with the Land Dweller, whilst Vacheron Constantin celebrated its 270th anniversary and also released the most complicated wristwatch ever made (the Les Cabinotiers Solaria). Bulgari made its first-ever appearance at the fair, debuting the thinnest tourbillon watch in the world, while Cartier revisited its Tank à Guichets , an art deco jumping hours watch design from the 1920s. Style Edit: At Watches and Wonders 2025 in Geneva, Tag Heuer wowed with timepiece innovations designed to set hearts racing, plus a spectacular Formula 1 pit stop that dominated Palexpo
Tag Heuer is celebrating having closer ties to Formula One than ever, especially after returning as official timekeeper this year. The brand's strong showing at Watches and Wonders reflected this, as their Palexpo pit stop – spanning a full 1,000 square metres – prominently showcased cars driven by legends Ayrton Senna and Max Verstappen Tag Heuer Monaco F1 Split-Seconds Chronograph. Photo: Handout Certain novelties were clearly designed to set hearts racing at the fair, not least the Tag Heuer Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph F1 with its celebratory 10-piece limited run. Housed in the model's signature square 41mm case – this year in ceramic – is the split-seconds chronograph calibre TH81-00. This movement, one of the lightest made by Tag Heuer, allows timekeepers to measure two separate time intervals, perfect for tracking laps. The watch itself is all white with a translucent red-tinted dial that 'captures the sheer adrenaline of race day'. Advertisement Meanwhile, the brand also reintroduced a silhouette from the 1980s with the Tag Heuer Formula 1 Solargraph, which comes in at 38mm in steel with a sandblasted and DLC-coated finish. The funky design lends itself well to the nine colourways shown at the fair, including bold shades of green, blue, white, black and yellow. Photo: Handout The movement itself is modern and convenient, with just two minutes of exposure to direct sunlight enough to power the watch for an entire day. Fully charged, from less than 40 hours in the sun, the watch can run for up to 10 months without further charging, while the battery boasts a 15-year lifespan. For fans of the brand's more discreet designs, Tag Heuer also updated its Carrera Day-Date line. The time, day and date configuration now sees new dial colours like blue or smoky red, and a variety of accents over black dials including rose gold or an orange seconds hand. With the date at six o'clock, the piece has an internal 24-hour scale in teal and white, with a rhodium-plated and red-lacquered GMT hand. Tag Heuer's ties to Formula One and motorsport were made abundantly clear this year, driven home by a quote from Senna himself: 'I'm not designed to come second or third.
