Warner Bros. Discovery Stock Enjoys Big Jump, Then Promptly Fades After Split Announcement

Warner Bros. Discovery's plan to split into two publicly traded companies sent its stock price surging higher on Monday morning, with shares of WBD jumping 13% to $11.10 on the Nasdaq exchange only minutes after the opening bell. Those early gains started to fade by midday, though, with Warner Bros. Discovery's stock trading for $9.94 per share at 1 p.m. ET — up 1.30% from where it closed last week. Here is an up-to-the-minute look at WBD: On the year, WBD is down 6%, and the company's stock price has been more than sliced in half since it debuted on the Nasdaq in 2022 for $24.08 per share. That came after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged — a move that was met with a collective shrug from Wall Street analysts and investors from the start, with its stock price increasing 0.8% on April 11, 2022, its first day of trading. Now, three years later, WBD announced on Monday it will split into two companies, with one company focused on its global cable channels and another dedicated to its movie and streaming businesses. David Zaslav, president and CEO of WBD, will become president and CEO of Streaming & Studios, while Gunnar Wiedenfels, WBD's CFO, will serve as president and CEO of Global Networks. The separation is expected to be completed by mid-2026. 'By operating as two distinct and optimized companies in the future, we are empowering these iconic brands with the sharper focus and strategic flexibility they need to compete most effectively in today's evolving media landscape,' Zaslav said in a statement. The new Streaming & Studios operation will consist of Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO and HBO Max, in addition to their corresponding film and television libraries. Global Networks, meanwhile, will include international entertainment, sports and TV news brands such as CNN, TNT Sports, Discovery, Discovery+, Bleacher Report and European free-to-air channels. In related news, WBD investors last week voted to reject a $51.9 million compensation package for Zaslav. The post Warner Bros. Warner Bros. Discovery Stock Jumps on Bold Two-Way Split Plan

June 9 - Warner Bros Discovery (NASDAQ:WBD) shares climbed about 9% on early Monday trading after the company unveiled plans to split into two standalone businesses. The first entity will house Streaming & Studios operations, including Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, and HBO Max, along with its film and television libraries. Current Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav will continue to lead this unit. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 4 Warning Signs with WBD. The second company will comprise Global Networks, featuring brands such as CNN, TNT Sports, Discovery, free-to-air European channels, Discovery+, and Bleacher Report. Warner Bros Chief Financial Officer Gunnar Wiedenfels is set to head this business following the separation. Some analysts had anticipated the split. Bank of America's Jessica Reif Ehrlich flagged such a move as beneficial for WBD shares while maintaining a Buy rating and a $14 price target, implying roughly 43% upside. News of the separation sent shares up 8.6% in premarket trading, erasing most of their year-to-date decline of about 7%. The spin-off is expected to be tax-free and close by mid-2026, aiming to unlock value by allowing each company to focus on its core operations. This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Warner Bros. Discovery to divide into two companies

June 9 (UPI) -- Warner Bros. Discovery announced Monday it will separate into two publicly traded companies by sometime in 2026. "By operating as two distinct and optimized companies in the future, we are empowering these iconic brands with the sharper focus and strategic flexibility they need to compete most effectively in today's evolving media landscape," said the company's President and CEO David Zaslavin a press release. Once the separation is complete, Zaslav will serve as President and CEO of Warner Bros. TV and movie group, plus DC Studios, HBO, and HBO Max in what is being called "The Streaming & Studios" company in the statement. A group to be known as "Global Networks" will include CNN, TNT Sports in the United States and Discovery, as well as Discovery-Plus and Bleacher Report, and will be led by Gunnar Wiedenfels, the current CFO of Warner Bros. Discovery who will serve its President and CEO. "This separation will invigorate each company by enabling them to leverage their strengths and specific financial profiles," said Wiedenfels. "At Global Networks, we will focus on further identifying innovative ways to work with distribution partners to create value for both linear and streaming viewers globally while maximizing our network assets and driving free cash flow." The news follows the December 2024 announcement by WBD that it would undertake a restructuring plan to break up its corporate structure into two distinct operating divisions that were to be called "Streaming & Studios" and "Global Linear Networks." As of 10:51 a.m. Monday, Warner Bros Discovery shares were up 7.59% on the Nasdaq composite. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
