Tariff uncertainty adds pressure to US soft goods retailers: Fitch
Fitch Ratings has warned that ongoing trade tariff uncertainties continue to pose execution risks for US soft goods retailers, exacerbating pre-existing structural challenges in the sector. In April, the agency revised its 2025 outlook for the US retail and consumer products sectors to 'deteriorating' from 'neutral', citing the potential for increased trade barriers, rising retail costs, and waning consumer sentiment.
Retailers reliant on imports from China, Vietnam, and Cambodia are especially vulnerable, with Fitch noting the absence of a long-term trade agreement and persistent uncertainty despite a recent US Federal court ruling. Soft line and department store retailers face heightened sourcing risks, which could affect holiday season planning and lead to markdowns, inventory issues, or lost market share, it said in a press release.
Fitch Ratings has downgraded its 2025 outlook for the US retail and consumer products sector to 'deteriorating', citing tariff uncertainty, soft consumer demand, and sourcing risks, especially for soft goods retailers. Apparel and footwear sales are expected to decline mid-single digits, pressuring margins. While firms like Dillard's remain resilient, others like Capri Holdings face heightened risk.
Fitch projects mid-single digit topline declines for discretionary spending, including apparel and footwear, in 2025. This could result in EBITDA declines of up to mid-teen levels due to sales deleverage, increased markdowns, and some absorption of tariff costs. However, Fitch also noted divergence across product categories and company strategies.
Larger, higher-rated retailers such as Signet Jewelers (BBB-/Stable) and Dillard's (BBB-/Positive) are expected to better withstand volatility due to stronger vendor relations, design capabilities, and liquidity. In contrast, companies like Capri Holdings (BB/Negative), which is already experiencing EBITDA and topline pressure, may face greater challenges. Capri could benefit in the near term from the proceeds of its Versace sale.
Fitch expects retailers to preserve liquidity by limiting share buybacks, capital expenditure, and dividends, as they did during past downturns. While most Fitch-rated issuers have sufficient rating headroom and manageable maturity risk, companies such as Levi Strauss, Macy's, Nordstrom, and Samsonite may see EBITDAR leverage trend near or above negative rating sensitivities in 2025 before improving in 2026, the release added.

Corporate and government offices have been at the forefront of adopting green certification, primarily due to the benefits in energy and water consumption. M Anand, deputy executive director of CII-IGBC, said these buildings achieve 40-50% energy savings compared to traditional structures. Water demand reduction ranges from 30-35%, he added. The additional investment is typically recovered within 18 months through reduced operational costs, while the benefits of lower energy and water consumption continue throughout the building's lifetime," said M Anand at a CII-Rajasthan event on environment protection. Besides corporate offices and govt buildings, green certification in the real estate sector has also witnessed a sharp increase with growing awareness about the benefits among the end-users and the govt incentives offered to developers. "The market penetration of green buildings in Rajasthan in the new projects currently stands at 10-12%, marking substantial growth over the past decade. Green homes have proven to be better investments than instruments like gold and equity," said Anand. Citing examples, he said these buildings incorporate innovative plumbing features to reduce water use, install rainwater harvesting facilities, and recycle grey and black water. The hospitality sector, particularly hotel chains, has embraced green building certification , recognizing the long-term benefits of sustainable construction. While architectural expertise for green buildings was concentrated in metro areas earlier, the concept has gradually expanded to smaller cities. Current CII-Rajasthan chairman Sanjay Agarwal and the previous chairman Arun Misra also spoke on the initiatives CII is pursuing to increase the industry's green footprint.

PBoC likely to cut key rate further as policy eases, says Fitch
People's Bank of China (PBoC) is expected to make further cuts to its seven-day reverse repo (RR) rate in 2025, following a reduction from 1.5 per cent to 1.4 per cent on May 9, according to Fitch Ratings. The move aligns with the central bank's shift from a 'prudent' to a 'moderately loose' monetary stance, as announced in December 2024. The PBoC also reduced the Reserve Requirement Ratio for large banks to 9 per cent from 9.5 per cent. Fitch has updated its Global Economic Outlook (GEO) to reflect the seven-day RR as China's primary policy interest rate, replacing the Medium-Term Lending Facility (MLF) rate due to structural changes in its implementation. If MLF rate forecasts were applied mechanically, the RR rate could fall to as low as 0.5 per cent by the end of 2025, Fitch said in a press release. Despite a move towards a more price-based policy framework, the PBoC continues to use both price- and quantity-based tools. The central bank reaffirmed the role of the seven-day RR rate as its main policy rate and has created a tighter corridor for interbank rates, with overnight repo and reverse repo operations pegged 20 basis points below and 50 basis points above the RR rate, respectively. PBoC may implement further cuts to its seven-day reverse repo (RR) rate in 2025, following a reduction to 1.4 per cent in May, according to Fitch Ratings. This aligns with its shift to a 'moderately loose' monetary stance. Fitch now considers the seven-day RR as China's main policy rate. Although deep cuts are projected, easing could be constrained by recent US-China trade de-escalation. While aggressive easing is anticipated, the recent easing in US-China trade tensions may moderate the extent of future rate cuts. Fibre2Fashion News Desk (KD)
