Shaquille O'Neal delivers scathing assessment of NBA's direction as Finals approach
Basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal is not happy with the current state of NBA basketball.
O'Neal, 53, lamented how the game had gone "soft."
"The league is getting soft, the game is getting soft and it's going to take a couple of people to bring it back," O'Neal said during a recent appearance on "New Heights."
The 15-time NBA All-Star does not like the trend of centers shooting 3-pointers and prefers the big men dominating in the paint.
"Like, I hate big guys shooting (3-pointers). Victor Wembanyama is a great player, but I would love to just see him dominate so much that people start complaining, and they change the rules like when I did. I could shoot, but I'm not going to shoot a (3-pointer)," O'Neal said.
"Why would I shoot a (3-pointer) when I could put your little a-- in the basket and dunk on you and put these balls in your face."
O'Neal also expressed his disdain for the current NBA All-Star game format.
"Our NBA All-Star format is terrible. I don't know who's in charge, but it's terrible," O'Neal said.
The NBA's format this season had four different teams in a mini-tournament drafted by O'Neal, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith. The fourth team in the format was the winner of the Rising Stars challenge.
Over the years, the NBA has tinkered with the format in hopes of getting more effort from players. Regardless of the format, the players have not given 100% effort during the game and the product has declined.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said next year's All-Star game will be USA vs. World, but he is "not exactly sure what the format will be yet" during a recent appearance on "Breakfast Ball."
The NBA Finals begin Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers.

Study may lead to redesign of Quincy fieldhouse project
Jun. 5—QUINCY — Quincy Valley Regional Parks District officials may have to review the preliminary design following a feasibility study for the Quincy fieldhouse, called the Q-Plex, presented to commissioners Tuesday. Parks District Executive Director Pat Haley said the original design might not be able to accomplish the original objective. "One (turf) field inside isn't enough to draw people," Haley said. "Whatever it is, it has to be multiple. If you're going to have soccer tournaments come to your town, you have to have multiple fields. Just breaking the existing field into four smaller ones isn't enough to bring people to town for a tournament." While multiple smaller fields might attract youth activities, it won't attract adult tournaments. "The recommendation from the feasibility study is to redesign, not necessarily change the components, but redesign the facility to be more suitable to type of use it's going to receive," Haley said. The parks district was approved by voters in the Quincy area in 2023, and one of the proposed projects is the Q-Plex. It's projected to be about 143,000 square feet, with a turf field and indoor courts. Haley said one of the purposes of the proposed building would be hosting tournaments that would bring people from out of town. While people won't schedule tournaments on a smaller-than-regulation turf field, he said, there are other options. "(The study) did provide a layout of a facility that is somewhat similar to what we have. But instead of having one big field and two (hardwood) courts, it has one big field and four courts," Haley said. The courts could be configured for basketball, volleyball, wrestling or other sports, he said, and the study determined it would be an attractive tournament venue in that situation. What that would mean for the design is still being studied. "We're checking to make sure it fits in our original footprint," he said. The original design called for a steel frame covered with a membrane, but the feasibility study recommended using steel for the walls, Haley said. A more detailed presentation on the potential economic impact is scheduled for next month, he said. "We're checking to make sure (the recommended design) fits in the original footprint," Haley said.

Liberty-Eylau falls in state title game
ROUND ROCK, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) — The Liberty-Eylau baseball team fell in the state title game 4-3 Thursday night against Corpus Christi London. The Leopards led 3-2 in the 5th inning but gave up a pair of runs in the top of the inning to give up the lead. Liberty-Eylau struggled at the plate, finishing the game with just two hits. The Leopards tied the game at one when Collin Evans grounded out in the 1st inning, scoring Eli Jarvis on the fielders choice. In the 2nd inning the Leopards would take the lead after a sacrifice fly that would score junior Maddax Moore. The Leopards weren't able to score a run the rest of the game, falling short of back-to-back state championships. Zach Fowler's crew would go on to finish the season with a record of 36-5.
