Abdul Karim takes on new role as PBB's publicity chief, pledges alignment with party's direction
KUCHING, May 18 — Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has been appointed as the new publicity chief of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).
Speaking to reporters after the Pre-State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Meeting and PBB Sarawak Supreme Council Meeting 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night, the Asajaya assemblyman said the role was not entirely unfamiliar to him.
'In terms of responsibilities, I believe they are quite similar to what I undertook previously when I served as a vice-president.
'The role of publicity chief is almost parallel to that of a vice-president, as both positions hold the authority to issue statements.
'Now, serving as publicity chief, I believe this role will see me working more closely with the secretary-general and the party president to ensure that any statements issued are aligned with the party's direction and not perceived as too personal,' he said.
Abdul Karim previously did not retain his position as vice-president during PBB's triennial delegates convention held in February.
Nevertheless, he expressed his gratitude to the party President and Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his appointment to the post.
His appointment fills the vacancy previously held by Datuk Idris Buang.
'This reflects the trust that may still remain for me to continue contributing to the party's Supreme Council,' he added.
Abdul Karim retains his state ministerial portfolios as Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, as well as Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister. — The Borneo Post

PUTRAJAYA, June 7 — Pakistan's bid to become a full dialogue partner with Asean will be discussed with leaders of the regional grouping, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Pakistan, which became Asean's first sectoral dialogue partner in 1993, has consistently valued its cooperation with the regional grouping and aims to further expand those ties. In October last year, Anwar was quoted as saying that Malaysia fully supported Pakistan's efforts to become a full dialogue partner of Asean. Meanwhile, when asked about Pakistan welcoming his offer to mediate in the ongoing tension between India and Pakistan, Anwar said Malaysia only hopes for a peaceful resolution. 'I have no role to play, I'm simply offering my opinion,' he said. Earlier, Anwar and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, performed the Aidiladha prayers alongside nearly 15,000 congregants at the Putra Mosque. Anwar, dressed in a light blue baju Melayu, arrived at 7.50 am and was greeted by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Dr Zulkifli Hasan. The Prime Minister also joined the congregation reciting the takbir raya before performing the Aidiladha prayers, led by the Grand Imam of the Putra Mosque Dr Muhamad Zakuwa Rodzali. He then listened to the Aidiladha sermon titled 'Korban dan Semangat Kebersamaan', which emphasised the importance of intention, proper conduct, and sincerity in performing the sacrificial ritual. Anwar says Malaysia supports Thai-Cambodia peace talks on June 14, offers to help de-escalate tensions
PUTRAJAYA, June 7 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today Malaysia is prepared to help Thailand and Cambodia reach a peaceful solution amid tension along the two countries' borders. Malaysia currently chairs the ten-member Association of South-east Asian Nations (Asean), and Anwar held talks last night with the prime ministers of both countries as he sought to de-escalate the dispute, which reportedly caused one fatality. 'I have spoken to both of them and they've taken steps that we support, that includes dialogue at a meeting on June 14,' he told reporters after performing the Aidiladha prayers here. 'We are ready to observe and help if necessary, but so far, both nations have agreed to talk.' Thai and Cambodian troops were reported to have engaged in a brief skirmish in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's Preah Vihear province on May 28, which killed one Cambodian soldier. Phnom Penh said it plans to bring the matter to the International Court of Justice, while Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra yesterday expressed willingness to solve the dispute peacefully.
