Plea Claims "Extra-Judicial Ban" On 'Thug Life' In Karnataka, Supreme Court Issues Notice
Hearing a petition which claimed an "unconstitutional and extra-judicial ban" had been imposed on Kamal Haasan's film 'Thug Life' in Karnataka, the Supreme Court has issued a notice to the state government. The notice, the court said, was being issued considering the urgency of the situation.
The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce had threatened to ban the release of the film over the actor's statement that Kannada was "born out of Tamil". Certain groups have also threatened theatres in Karnataka and asked them not to screen the film, because of which it was released worldwide on June 5, but not in the state.
The Karnataka High Court had earlier suggested that Mr Haasan apologise. The actor has said his statement was misunderstood and that he deeply respects the Kannada language, but has not issued an outright apology.
Hearing the petition on Friday, the partial working day bench of the Supreme Court noted it has been argued that the film, which was duly certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), is not being allowed to be screened in the state of Karnataka.
"The so-called ban under threats of violence comes from terror and arson against cinema halls targeting linguistic minorities. Considering the urgency shown, we issue notice to the respondent," the bench said.
The plea states that the "ban" stems not from any lawful process, but from a deliberate campaign of terror, including explicit threats of arson against cinema halls and incitement to large-scale communal violence targeting linguistic minorities.
It also alleges that the inaction of the State against the non-state actors allegedly inciting violence has led to the violation of Articles 14 (right to equality), 19(1)(a) (right to freedom of speech and expression), 19(1)(g) (right to practice any profession) and 21 (right to life and personal liberty) of the Constitution of the filmmakers, exhibitors and the viewing public.

A boat carrying actor Rishab Shetty and around 30 crew members capsized during the shoot of 'Kantara: Chapter 1' at the Mani reservoir in Karnataka's Shivamogga district, reported news agency PTI. The incident occurred in the shallow waters of Melina Koppa in the Masti Katte region, narrowly averting what could have been a major tragedy. All members onboard, including actor-director Shetty, escaped unhurt, the police said. However, filming equipment, including cameras, is believed to have been damaged or lost. The exact value of the loss is still being assessed, according to Thirthahalli police, who confirmed an investigation is underway. This incident comes just days after the death of actor-mimicry artist Kalabhavan Niju, 43, who suffered a heart attack in Bengaluru while shooting for the same film. According to a report by OnManorama, Niju complained of chest pain at the homestay arranged for artists and was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead. The Kerala-based actor had reportedly joined the film after an audition and was last seen in the Malayalam film 'Marco'. His death marks the third fatality linked to 'Kantara: Chapter 1' in the past month. In May, Kannada comedian Rakesh Poojary, 33, died of a cardiac arrest while attending a wedding. Around the same time, a 32-year-old junior artiste from Kerala, MF Kapil, drowned in the Souparnika river after being caught in a cross current. The Hombale Films production has endured a series of misfortunes since filming began. Last November, a minibus carrying 20 junior artistes met with an accident in Mudoor; though all escaped unhurt, it raised alarms over on-set safety. Earlier, a costly set constructed for the film was destroyed by heavy rains, further delaying the shoot. Kantara: Chapter 1 is a prequel to Shetty's critically acclaimed 2022 film Kantara. The new instalment is scheduled for release on 2 October 2025, with Rishab Shetty once again taking the lead role.

SC to hear on Monday plea of Amtek Group promoter seeking interim bail
The Supreme Court is slated to hear on Monday a plea of Amtek Group promoter Arvind Dham seeking interim bail in connection with a money laundering case. As per the causelist published on the website of the apex court, a bench of Justices Sandeep Mehta and Prasanna B. Varale will take up the matter for hearing on June 16. Earlier, the Delhi High Court had turned down the prayer to release Dham on interim bail pending the disposal of his regular bail application. Dham's counsel argued that he had been languishing in custody for 11 months, and his regular bail application was pending for adjudication before the Delhi HC since February 2025. Opposing the prayer for interim bail till the disposal of the regular bail application, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had contended that the agency did not seek a single adjournment and there was no ground for the grant of interim bail. The ED referred to the apex court's April 7 decision, which had refused to extend Dham's interim bail on medical grounds. In its order passed on May 30, a bench of Justice Ravinder Dudeja recorded that the regular bail application could not be decided partly because of the reason of change of roster and subsequently because of the filing of the interim bail application on medical grounds, which was dealt on number of dates, and thereafter because of the lengthy arguments on the bail application. "Since the matter is already part-heard on merits, I do not deem it appropriate to grant interim bail to the applicant/accused. However, keeping in view the question of liberty of the applicant/accused being involved, the date is preponed to 15.07.2025," he ordered. The ED initiated an investigation based on the Supreme Court's order on February 27, 2024, while hearing a PIL against Amtek Auto group of companies, which directed the federal anti-money laundering agency to investigate the case involving bank fraud by Amtek Auto Group to the tune of Rs 27,000 crore. The top court expressed concerns regarding the diversion of public money, emphasising the necessity of a comprehensive money laundering investigation by the ED, even if the banks concerned had settled the accounts. Multiple FIRs were lodged by the CBI arising from the complaints by IDBI Bank and the Bank of Maharashtra under various sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, on allegations of illegally diverting bank loans by causing wrongful loss to the banks. In the course of the investigation, the ED provisionally attached movable and immovable properties valued at Rs 557.49 crore under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The probe revealed that the financial statements of group companies were deceitfully manipulated to obtain additional fraudulent loans and create bogus assets and investments in the books of accounts. The ED had earlier conducted searches at more than 40 locations and subsequently arrested Dham and filed a prosecution complaint on September 6, 2024.
