Angels manager Ron Washington out indefinitely because of health concerns
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington will be out indefinitely because of health issues, and bench coach Ray Montgomery will manage Friday night's series opener against the Houston Astros.
Washington, 73, experienced shortness of breath and appeared fatigued toward the end of a four-game series against the Yankees. He was cleared by Yankees doctors to fly home with the team Thursday night and underwent a series of medical tests on Friday.
General manager Perry Minasian announced Washington's status before the game.
The Angels did not specify what symptoms Washington is experiencing, but said the manager was able to address the team in the clubhouse along with Minasian on Friday, and he was planning to watch the game from the GM's Angel Stadium suite. Washington was not made available to the media.
'Wash has not felt great the last couple of days,' Minasian said. 'We want to make sure he's 100% before he's back in the dugout and managing. How long it's going to take, I don't know. I don't expect it to be too long.
'We all know how important this is for all of us, but health is more important than anything, and me personally, I'm not letting him back in the dugout until I know he's 100% OK. I love the guy too much.'
Washington, who managed the Texas Rangers to back-to-back World Series in 2010 and 2011, was hired by Minasian before a 2024 season in which the Angels lost a franchise-record 99 games.

The Angels entered Friday night's game at 36-38 —- 6 1/2 games behind the Astros in the AL West. The Angels are 15-6 in one-run games, a major league-best .714 winning percentage, and 5-0 in extra innings.
'He wants to manage–I don't know if he's ever missed a game–but at the end of the day, you have to make tough decisions,' Minasian said. 'For me, I want to make sure the guy is absolutely healthy, and physically, he's in the right place before we put him back in the dugout.
'We play some close games. They're not the types of games you can sit back, kick your feet up and just watch. They're pretty tight games, stressful games, and I want to make sure he's good to go health-wise before he gets back in the dugout.'

Raleigh homers twice, breaks Bench's record in the Mariners' victory over the Cubs
CHICAGO (AP) — Cal Raleigh broke Johnny Bench's record for home runs by a catcher before the All-Star break, hitting his major league-leading 28th and 29th in the Seattle Mariners' 9-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday. Raleigh broke a tie in the seventh with No. 29 to move ahead of Hall of Famer Bench's 1970 mark. Raleigh needed only 73 games to break the record that Bench set in 87 games. The Seattle star shattered the mark with 22 games to spare before the All-Star game. Raleigh had three hits in his sixth multi-homer game of the season. Fans of Argentinian club Boca Juniors take over South Florida during the Club World Cup
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Boca Juniors plays two of its three group-stage games of the Club World Cup in South Florida, and the Argentinian club's traveling fans have made their presence known. In the club's first game of the tournament, a 2-2 draw against Benfica, the announced attendance of 55,574 at Hard Rock Stadium was mostly Boca fans. Supporters of the club have been highly visible in Miami-Dade County, gathering on the beach in the thousands and singing in local Walmarts. Sammy Icarina has supported Boca Juniors his whole life. 'I am a Boca fanatic. I'm 76 now, so imagine how long I've been a fan for. The minute the tickets came out I bought them,' Icarina told the Associated Press. The enthusiasm Boca has brought to the Club World Cup is known to those who love the team. 'It is always like this,' said Daniel Mata, who traveled from Argentina to watch. Silvana Gomez goes to Boca's home stadium in Buenos Aires, the Bombonera, frequently and says the traveling support is typical and expected. 'It's like this, always. Whether we go to Japan, Rio de Janeiro, wherever Boca plays we are always there,' Gomez said. Miami-Dade police have been present and heavily equipped at the stadium's multiple checkpoints. New procedures have not posed any problem for the passionate Boca Juniors fans and no incidents have been reported at the venue. 'For now I think (the security) is five stars, everything has been good, the police, the security, everything,' Icarina said. Only Boca Juniors and one of the top clubs in the world, Real Madrid, have sold out their group-stage matches.
