'Left a lot on the table': Rockets lament shooting gap versus Lakers In a potentially costly loss to the Lakers, Dorian Finney-Smith and Gabe Vincent made more 3-pointers combined (12) than Houston did as a team (10). Fred VanVleet missed 12 of his 14 shot attempts.
The Houston Rockets wrapped up a three-game road trip with Monday's 104-98 loss (box score) versus the Los Angeles Lakers.
Houston (49-27) remains at No. 2 in Western Conference standings after losing for just the second time in 14 games, though its margin for that second seed was reduced. The Lakers (46-29) are now 2.5 games back at No. 4, and the fate of a head-to-head tiebreaker versus the Rockets will depend on an April 11 rematch — also at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
The Rockets need one victory or one Memphis loss to secure a top-six seed — and with it, their first division title and NBA playoffs appearance in five years. The Grizzlies (44-31) host the Golden State Warriors (43-31) on Tuesday, while the Rockets host the Utah Jazz (16-60) on Wednesday.
As for Monday's game, which was the second night of a back-to-back after winning Sunday in Phoenix, key statistics included:
Amen Thompson: 20 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks; 8-of-14 shooting (57.1%)
Jabari Smith Jr.: 15 points, 11 rebounds; 6-of-10 shooting (60.0%), 3-of-6 on 3-pointers (50.0%)
Alperen Sengun: 14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists; 5-of-11 shooting (45.5%), 4-of-4 on free throws
Jalen Green: 9 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists; 4-of-13 shooting (30.8%)
Dillon Brooks: 16 points, 5 rebounds; 5-of-14 shooting (35.7%), 3-of-9 on 3-pointers (33.3%)
Tari Eason: 13 points, 3 rebounds; 6-of-11 shooting (54.5%), 1-of-2 on 3-pointers (50.0%)
Fred VanVleet: 7 points, 9 assists, 4 rebounds; 2-of-14 shooting (14.3%), 1-of-7 on 3-pointers (14.3%)
LeBron James (Lakers): 16 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists; 5-of-12 shooting (41.7%)
Luka Doncic (Lakers): 20 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds; 6-of-16 shooting (37.5%), 1-of-7 on 3-pointers (14.3%)
Dorian Finney-Smith (Lakers): 20 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 3 blocks +16 in 32 minutes; 6-of-11 on 3-pointers (54.5%)
Gabe Vincent (Lakers): 20 points, 4 rebounds; 6-of-13 on 3-pointers (46.2%)
The Rockets are now 7-10 on the second game of back-to-backs in the 2024-25 season. Fortunately, Houston does not have any more remaining.
Collectively, the difference between the teams on Monday night came down to 3-point shooting. Houston made 10-of-32 (31.3%) from distance, while the Lakers had both superior volume and accuracy at 16-of-46 (34.8%).
'The difference was a few of their guys made shots,' head coach Ime Udoka said. 'Some of our better shooters had off nights shooting, as well. So, we felt like we left a lot of things on the table.'
Houston committed extra resources to defend James and Doncic and dared players such as Finney-Smith and Vincent to make shots, and they did. On the other side, players such as VanVleet and Brooks struggled to make the Lakers pay for the additional attention paid to Green and Sengun.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Boast Crowded Wideout Room Ahead of Training Camp
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Boast Crowded Wideout Room Ahead of Training Camp originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had another successful NFL Draft this year, spearheaded by their No. 1 pick, wideout Emeka Egbuka, and several defensive picks after. Advertisement But with the selection of the standout Ohio State wideout, the Buccaneers will have questions when it comes time to cut down to the final 53-man roster ahead of the regular season. senior writer Scott Smith offered his take on how the offseason could play out and who could be the odd man or men out. "This year, if there are no more additions between now and then, the Buccaneers will take 12 receivers into camp, and eight of them were on the 53-man roster at some point last season," Smith wrote. "I think it's pretty safe to pinpoint the four guys who are virtual locks to be on the active roster to start the season: Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan and first-round draft pick Emeka Egbuka. The Buccaneers also drafted Tez Johnson in April, and while seventh-round picks are generally not locks to make the 53-man roster right away, the general consensus is that Johnson may have been something of a steal at that point in the draft. "If he demonstrates the same innate ability to get open and make big plays that he did at Oregon, the team may be leery about exposing him to the waiver wire in order to get him onto the practice squad. Also, he has a very real shot at earning the punt return job, which would be another path to a spot on the 53-man roster." Advertisement Smith continued that while there were a couple of wideouts that impressed last season, it's going to be hard to decide who to add to the surefire four. Sterling Shepard, Kameron Johnson and Trey Palmer, assuming Palmer isn't traded before then, as rumors might indicate, and Ryan Miller and Rakim Jarrett will all be in the mix. Stephen A. Smith Takes Firm Stand for Deion Sanders After He Defends Shedeur Sanders' Professionalism
Stephen A. Smith Takes Firm Stand for Deion Sanders After He Defends Shedeur Sanders' Professionalism originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After months of speculation, Shedeur Sanders' draft stock took a nosedive — sliding all the way to the fifth round despite once being viewed as a potential first-round talent. That fall wasn't just pinned on Shedeur. His father, Deion Sanders, came under fire, too. Advertisement Some reports alleged Shedeur showed up unprepared to team meetings, even suggesting he wore headphones during interviews — rumors that Deion publicly called 'foolish' and 'hurtful.' The Colorado coach insisted his son was fully professional, and now, he's not alone in defending that narrative. On a recent episode of "First Take," Stephen A. Smith took the opportunity to get personal — defending Deion Sanders' character and credibility in the face of mounting speculation. Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders and quarterback Shedeur Sanders© Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images 'Let's go a little bit deeper here,' Smith said. 'You guys are champions. You both played in the National Football League. Let's get personal. You know Deion Sanders enough. Has anybody ever been in a position to say Deion Sanders is a liar? Ever?' Advertisement Smith continued, 'We have all talked about him for years. Have you ever run across anybody that said Deion Sanders said one thing to your face and something else behind your back? That's not who that man is. So when he comes out and he says something about his son, there is no question he has spoken to his son. There is no question that Deion Sanders prepped his son for those interviews.' It's the latest in a string of high-profile defenses of the Sanders family, as Deion Sanders and his sons continue to operate under a media microscope. Shedeur's fall in the draft was widely dissected, with some critics pointing fingers at perceived arrogance or poor preparation. But with insiders like Smith backing the Sanders camp, those claims appear shakier by the day. Shedeur Sanders, now with the Cleveland Browns, has started making noise early at OTAs. According to Deion Sanders' Instagram, the rookie QB reportedly went 7-of-9 with three touchdowns and no interceptions in one recent session — an eye-catching stat line that could shift the narrative as fast as it turned. Advertisement With Deion standing firm, and Smith joining him on national television, the message is clear: the Sanders family isn't going to stay quiet while their professionalism is questioned.
