Meat processing creates temporary jobs

Meat processing creates temporary jobs

Express Tribune5 hours ago

The ritual of animal sacrifice opened the doors of temporary employment opportunities across the city's streets and neighbourhoods during the three days of Eidul Azha.
Small-scale businesses emerged to cater to the processing of sacrificial meat—mincing, cleaning of animal organs, and preparation of trotters (paye).
Special meat mincing machines were set up in alleys and neighbourhoods, providing unemployed individuals with a temporary source of income.
Many young jobless men began charging Rs50 per kilogramme to mince meat. Cleaning and preparing large animal trotters fetched Rs600 each, while complete cleaning of stomach lining (ojhri) was priced at Rs200 for large animals and Rs100 for smaller ones.
Throughout the city, makeshift stalls for meat mincing sprang up in every street and small market. Even women contributed by cleaning and preparing trotters at home, with handwritten boards advertising their services placed outside houses.
Over the three days of Eid, many unemployed youth earned well through these services. At the same time, major hotels across the city capitalised on the occasion by roasting sacrificial animal legs for customers. Residents used the minced meat from these local stalls to prepare kebabs and other traditional dishes at home.

KCCI appreciates Mayor Karachi, Sindh govt for cleanliness

KARACHI: President Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), Muhammad Jawed Bilwani, has extended heartfelt appreciation to Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab and the Sindh Government for their commendable efforts in ensuring exemplary cleanliness across the city during Eid ul Azha by swiftly and effectively disposing of sacrificial animal offal and waste. President KCCI stated, 'The Karachi Chamber highly appreciates the proactive approach and well-coordinated sanitation operations carried out by Mayor Karachi and the relevant departments of the Sindh Government. The timely clearance of offal and animal waste, despite the huge volume of sacrifices, has significantly contributed to maintaining public hygiene, protecting the environment, and ensuring the comfort of citizens throughout the Eid holidays.' Muhammad Jawed Bilwani noted that in previous years, Karachi had witnessed serious challenges in waste disposal during Eid ul Azha, leading to health hazards, foul stench, and a deteriorated urban environment. 'However, this year, the visible improvement in planning, execution, and monitoring of the sanitation drive is praiseworthy and deserves full recognition. The city remained clean, with no major complaints from any district, this is a first in many years,' he added. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

FBR recovers Rs600bn as IHC vacates stay orders in 270 cases

ISLAMABAD: In the last few months, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has vacated stay orders in 270 tax-related cases that had incapacitated Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to recover more than Rs600 billion. These 270 tax-related cases were pending in the IHC for over two decades. According to the details, three IHC division benches decided these tax-related matters. The division bench of Justice Mohammad Azam Khan and Justice Raja Inaam Ameen Minhas decided an overwhelming majority of 173 of tax cases involving Rs424bn. Another IHC bench comprising Justice Babar Sattar and Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan cleared 94 cases in which over Rs150bn recoveries were stalled. A bench comprising acting IHC Chief Justice Sardar Mohammad Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Raja Inaam Ameen Minhas lifted the stay orders and decided three petitions that had in 2023 restrained the FBR to collect Rs36bn. A two-member division bench comprising Justice Mohammad Azam Khan and Justice Raja Inaam Ameen Minhas decided 125 cases related to Income Tax References, Sales Tax References and Foreign Exchange Regulations Act. The government's recoverable Rs290.51bn were stuck in 125 cases related to ITR. 36 STR cases involved recovery of Rs131.55bn while Rs3.16bn were recoverable in 12 cases related to FERA. In February this year the Prime Minister met with Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi to discuss the agenda of the upcoming meeting of the National Judicial Policy Making Committee. During the meeting, the Prime Minister requested the CJP for expeditious disposal of tax-related cases. The IMF Governance and Diagnostic Assessment teams visited Pakistan to examine the governance structure of several ministries related to fiscal policy, tax policy, corruption, procurement, audits, and anti-money laundering. The NJPMC also advised for swift disposal of the tax-related matters, in its meeting held in April, asking the high courts to constitute special benches for expeditious disposal of tax-related cases. Following NJPMC's advice and directions issued by the apex court in the tax matters, the IHC Judicial Registrar put up a note before the acting CJ for consolidation of all the matters.
